i began playing BG2 recently and have with me a particular walkthrough given to me by a friend. this walkthrough mentions beginning the game with a fighter mage and adding minor spell sequencer in on of the 4th lvl mage spell slots. but during character generation i have only upto lvl 3 mage spells. is the minor spell sequencer available anywhere in BG2? what about other spell sequencers? the earlier i can come across one, the better.
|
A sequencer isn't available at character generation, IIRC, so the walkthru is wrong. The minor sequencer can be found fairly early in the game however. Sequencers DO make the game easier at higher levels, but are hardly needed early in the game. This walkthru must be of the 'powergame' variety.

ok, so it is available in the game early on. where is it? i;m currently doing the quest of the unseeing eye and am at the moment in the undead village.

Hmm...
Go to the City Gate District and find the man that will lead you to Tradesmeet. |

Otherwise, I know I have bought it in a store somewhere, just don't remember where. :( Sorry to not be of more help! |
@D. Slaytern: i'll check it out...
@Griefmaker: is it perchance the adventure mart? |

I know the walkthrough you're talking about, and if you're following it (or any walkthrough the first time) you're ruining your experience.
[/rant] Anyway, the reason that character can pick the minor sequencer spell is because he's importing from BGI. If you import your guy from BGI, you will start with more experience in BGII. You'll start about a level higher. |
There might be one in the Spell Store by the Den of Seven Vales. (I think that's the name. It's on the right side of where you came out originally).

If you are starting you character anew in BG II, you can only choose Minor Spell Sequencer if you are a pure class mage or sorcerer. Any multi-class combination will have your mage's spell picks capped out at level 3.
Also, you only end up with a higher level starting character if you have TotSC installed. EDIT] Followed the link in the above post... if thats the walkthrough you're using, i wouldn't. I didnt read the walkthrough, but just by looking at the tips section i can tell that this guy doesn't have a clue about the spells and how they work in this game. If you want to know about the spells and how they work, take a look atXyx's Spell Reference [ 04-03-2005, 03:57 AM: Message edited by: White Lancer ] |
@krunchyfrogg:
I know that using a walkthru to get thru a game is not the best of ideas. but as of now, i just lost my entire game of Icewind Dale and half the game of Icewind Dale 2 due to some silly computer error. So I just want a game that i can see to the end. I do intend to try out BG1 after a couple of months. So all in all i think i can be forgiven this once. |
@ Sir Goulum: will check it out ASAP(gold permitting, obviously!). Thanks in advance.

The link was so that you know where to get scrolls for each spell, and not for advice on how to beat enemies ;)

well i finally got hold of a minor spell sequencer in the underdark's gnome village. but how is it used? i memorised it and then clicked on it. immediately it asked me to store my spells. i put one mirror image and one blur for my character and two magic missiles for imoen. then i clicked again and my character waves around in the air. but no mirror image or blur. so i slept again and tried it again. still no use.
is this the right method? can i change the spells in the sequencer later if i want to? |
Have a hunt in your 'special abilities' section (the star on the bottom-right of the toolbar). I think you might be able to change them - look in your spellbook and I think there's some option at the bottom to view them at least.
|
I dont think you can change the spells in the sequencer without using the one you've made and re-casting another sequencer.
On contingencies you can change the spells loaded up by clicking on a button at the bottom of the screen in your spellbook (like shamrock said) but im not sure if this simply replaces the chosen spells or recasts a new contingency - hence using another 6th lvl spell (for contingency) or 9th lvl spell (for chain contingency) |

P.S. thanks for that shamrock! |
Yeah thats how you use a sequencer, they have quite a few good points:
- if you set one up you use up the spells you load into it for that day, but if you rest you get those spells back AND still have the spells handy in the sequencer - and theres the casting rate perk, the sequencers have a casting time (well 'use time', the actuall casting of the spell sequencer is a bit longer) of 1...i think. So obviously letting off 2 spells simultaneously with a casting time of 1 is pretty cool. ^ But thats all obvious, im just tired and typing as an exuse not to go study at this ungodly hour - got even more depressed writing this and then looking at the clock to find its only 11 o'clock...ughhh feels like 2 or 3 in the morning... ~ ANYWAY ~ Yeah spell trigger is just another sequencer (the best one). If you want an offensive trigger i can fully recomend one loaded up with 3*Sunfires - though if you do this remember to use the trigger on yourself as sunfire is based on the caster (i.e. dont go to use ability, select the trigger and click it on an emeny or you'll just get a spell failed message) |
it just seems too much trouble for a sequencer. perhaps i just expected it to be a one touch set of spells. till i saw it in action i actually thought that a spell sequencer as far as the name goes should automatically fire off the second spell immediately AFTER the first spell dies out!
and thanks for the targetting tip. the first time i used the sequencer i set off the mirror immage on someone else. thankfully i was only experimenting. thanks again! and all the best for your studies! [ 04-07-2005, 01:42 PM: Message edited by: Serak Moonblade ] |
Serak: I'm curious.. when you say you targeted the mirror image on someone else, you did get the "spell failure" right? That'd be pretty cool if one could cast MI on some other party memebers like that!

@scarab
yup! i got spell failure. even i was thinking about how cool it'd be if we could cast more caster oriented spells on other party members or even on npc's. but i guess it'd make the game much too easy. however it wouldn't hurt to have such mods available. it lets your imagination run loose. |
