Spoilers abound, I think I know practically everything about this game anyway.

I'm replaying through my heavily modded game (on insane) and I want to get the most out of this game. There are certain "hot-spots" in the game, like outside of Mae'var's guildhall, outside slaver compound, below the temple of helm in the Bridge district, above the merchant's square in the bridge district, just to name a few. There you will meet people at random times during the night, especially during the guild war in chapter 2. I'm looking for a list of all these encounters, because I'd like to know what I'm missing.

I currently have on tactics, ease, GB's improved thief, and a few other mods that I dont think would affect this at all. off the top of my head, these are the few random city encounters I remember:

(slums)
Shady Character (female)
Shady Character (male)
Slavers actually dragging people in chains

(Bridge)
Mugger group

(anywhere)
3 thieves and 1 vampire
2 thieves and 1 vampire (thieves attack you)
1 thief and 1 vampire (thief dominated)
Sansuki and a billion vampires
4 vampires attack you (you can opt out if you don't allie with anyone)
Arkanis gath +co and 4 vampires (I KNOW this is on a mod)
Bodhi and 4 thieves (I KNOW this is on a mod)

I hope I have these in the correct order. Also, am I missing any? for the slaver compound, anyone know how many there are? I remember seeing this only once, and I don't remember if I did the Coronet first or not. I'm pretty sure if you kill Heagan you lose all those random encounters. Please, please, please share. If you happen to know the vampires names, that would also help. I tried googling for a list of encounters and found none, so I thought I'd ask here.

There are some random Dragon encounters in the wilderness.

Random? Do you mean wyverns instead of dragons? If you have Tactics installed, you can meet dragons in the forest, but those aren't random either.

whathuh 03-26-2005 04:55 PM

I know of the dragons, but I'm not all that interested in those "random encounters". Well wait, maybe I am. I know that Red dragons attack good parties, silver dragons attack evil parties, I don't know of any others. I'll have to look at SK for the new creatures (I assume they are not called adalon and firkraag).

The random encounters between maps as I remember are:
Suna Seni and Eldarin (suna seni is gone in UB, I have that mod too)
Renfeld
Generic bandits and slavers
Clones (chapter 6)
Orogs and bandits
-Mod related-
Bandits and mage
Necromancer group
I know thersanother one, but I don't know who is in it
Rakshasa (I dont recall seeing this one though)

Traveling to de'arnise with UB (I think)
Umber hulks + Yuan ti
Orcs/mages + trolls
Lots of ogres/mages

Also, I'm interested more in exact details than generalizations. Also, I know about the 3 dragons in the "small teeth" pass. Small teeth... HAH!

That's Habib.

Makes me wonder why you call the the 'Random Encounters' list, when most of them are actually fixed encounters...

Because they don't always occur. They randomly spawn when you walk across a hot spot, but at times do not spawn at all. So, no, they are not really random, but they happen at random times, even though you have some control over when they occur.

Also, Habib and his scimitar have 2 encounters, one is usually when you are about to leave the area in the slums, but also in the docks and probably another place too. Also, if you gointo the temple in the slums, he will throw coins at you. Anyone know if this really was just a stupid addon that BIO put on there to confuse people like me and has nothing else to it?

shamrock_uk 03-26-2005 06:39 PM

Stupid addon? Nay! All part of the charm! Sometimes it's nice to have random events that aren't actually part of a grand quest...just like a real city

whathuh 03-26-2005 07:17 PM

Stupid addon because it is completely random and never completes itself, like you can't ever FIND habib ever again, or talk some sense into him. I suppose it is nice sometimes, but its kind of like the gem in diablo 2 in the chatroom.

(if anyone doesn't know, the diablo 2 gem is a gem that when you press it, turn from blue to purple and displays "gem activated" or "gem deactivated" in the case of turning it off. Apparantly, it does nothing, but sometimes shows a "Perfect gem activated" or "gem activated" followed by a "Moooo!". Again, these things do absolutely nothing, but since only blizzard employees and those who made the game know the truth, its difficult to tell if they are lying or not.)

My first time thru I encountered Habib(at least I think it was him) in the Temple in the Promenade. He threw his scimitar and ran.

Xen 03-27-2005 12:20 PM

I always bump into him when I'm in the Docks.

Aragorn1 03-27-2005 04:39 PM

Me too, by one of the arches, almost every time IIRC

Tom-Slayer 03-27-2005 10:01 PM

Im positive one time i met him on the northern part of the slums, the archway up there.

Habib is the name of a poster on the BlackIsle forums, and he won a contest to have a cameo in the game.

Furthermore, many of the bosses' names in ToB are based on other BIS Forum members.

whathuh 03-27-2005 11:57 PM

As much as I love reading about where habib was last seen and such (I do like Dundee's info on that subject, answers many questions), I'm still at a loss for the random encounters. I've been up and down the slaver compound looking for the slaver spawn. Anyone know how that spawns, and are there only 1 spawns, or a multitude?

You have some control? Here, try this: There are up to three ambushes per night: Just after nightfall (halfway through Hour 21), at Hour 0, and at Hour 3 or 4. Any party member crossing a trigger point does the trick: The triggers that I cross most often are the stairway that connects Renal's Guildhall with the nearest District Exit, the area just south of the other Disctrict Exit, the stairs in front of the Sea's Bounty, the area between the entrance to the Slums and the eastern door of the Copper Coronet, the area just outside the other door to the Coronet, the open area to the north of the Coronet, the southeastern entrance to the Promenade, the Temple Sewers exit closest to the Radiant Heart, the walkway at the corner of the Temple of Lathander, the entrance to the Bridge District, the area north of the Five Flagons, etc., etc., etc.
The party of Cyricists will always spawn in a tight group. The Bandits will spawn in a random arrangement approximately 1 sight radius away from your PC if they can, but if the PC is offscreen (you're currently looking at some other part of the map area), they will all spawn right next to him.

I agree--kinda funny how these "random" encounters are predictable as anything. If there were fewer of them, they'd be a lot more dangerous.

Do you mean the one with the 2 slavers leading the guy who's supposed to be in chains? That only happens at Hour 0, before you've freed Hendak or attacked the Slaver Ship.

whathuh 03-28-2005 02:05 PM

Thanks a bunch six. Now I know how these things work. Unfortunately, I just did Hendak's quest, so I think I'll reload and try it out. Though this is the first time I've actually fought bandits at night (via the mod). They are freaking impossible for my fighterless party (sorcerer can't cast spells yet either without cowled retribution).

They are predictable, but for me, they occur at the most inopportune times. I've had a mugger group and sansuki's group attack me at the same time. Definately NOT fun.
