You can protect from Wing Buffet!

How? SPELL SHIELD! ;)

I've tested this a couple of times and it works. If you put a Spell Shield on some fighter/mage type of NPC (Solaufein, Haer'Dalis, various PC - Kensai/Mage, ...) you can whack dragons and they cannot Buffet you away!

This is very bad dragon news... :D

Nice find matey :D

Wing buffet has been one of the few dragon abilities that can ever mess up my carefully made plans. Usually gives them at least 3 seconds extra life while I have to run up to them to beat them to death again.

Awesome! This is going to aid my exploits immensly! ;)

::excited:: The newest mod NPC, to be unveiled soon?!

SixOfSpades 02-22-2005 01:34 AM

So...it grants immunity to the previously-unblockable Wing Buffet, as well as the previously-unblockable Anti-Magic Ray?!? Now we'll have to test it to see its function against psionics such as Detonate and Project Force.

Harkoliar 02-22-2005 07:18 AM

wow.. very nice find indeed.. i hate that wing buffet

Q'alooaith 02-22-2005 12:54 PM

Wing buffet is not a spell though, it's a pysical attack..

But even when a dragon is able to buffet you away it's only a short walk back into the fray.

Leslie 02-22-2005 01:54 PM

Yes, that's true. The game engine obviously treats Wing Buffet as some sort of spell which Spell Shield can block.

It is very cheesy to me - actually game engine exploit so I might not use this trick.

(Maybe in one NRL game I will... :D )

bjorn 02-22-2005 03:36 PM

but it only works once right?

Leslie 02-22-2005 04:00 PM

You mean if Spell Shield is removed after the first wing buffet? NO.

Some visual proofs:

With PFMW and Spell Shield (and SI:Abj., since dragons like to cast Remove Magic) you can just stand there and yawn... :D

It's rather hard to believe a large dragon in a real fight would not be able to chew through your helmet just because you were "Protected from Magical Weapons". And I don't even want to think about the weirdness of Spell Shield blocking Wing Buffet.

Dragon: "Perish, you manling!"
Dragon: Attacks < CHARNAME >
< CHARNAME >: Casts Protection from Magical Weapons
< CHARNAME >: Protected from Magical Weapons
Dragon: Attack roll 18+3=21 : Hit
Dragon: Weapon Ineffective
Dragon: "My fangs! You broke my fangs! You will pay for your insolence!"
Dragon: Attacks < CHARNAME >
Dragon: Attack roll 17+5=22 : Hit
Dragon: Weapon Ineffective
Dragon: "Aaaieee!"

Welcome to the magic world of BG2!

ocellis 02-24-2005 12:22 PM

If would be great if the dragons cast spell shield on themselves! I hate it that they are not immune against their own wing buffet.

Xen 02-24-2005 03:15 PM

Nice information Leslie, I think I will use it quite often. :D

Azred 02-25-2005 12:55 AM

Since the Infinity Engine treats many things as spells, the Spell Shield is the sneakiest and most useful tool available. If you look into such things, you will find that even traps (at least some traps) are treated as spells....

cool! The description seems to indicate that it would be consumed. Then again, it dosen't say anything about protecting against wing buffet :D

99% sure this is fixed by Smarter Dragons in Tactics

ocellis 02-25-2005 03:19 PM

Oh. It's been a while since i played the game. Back in the day the Big Red One had a deathwish, and kept cheating me out of my well deserved exp. Good to see this has been fixed :D
