Kestrel Daystar 01-03-2005 09:38 AM

Heyas everyone

I am in need of a good thief to take along in my party. I am lacking a thief and cannot really go through the game without one. So far, in my party (as I have said before) is:

Kestrel Daystar - Elf - Bard
Jaheira - Elf - Druid/Fighter (romance)
Aerie - Elf - Mage/Cleric
Keto - Human - Bard
Haer'dalis - Tiefling - Bard

I had to have Jaheira in my party as I had never done her romance so wanted to try that. I also had to have Keto in my party as I just downloaded her mod and wanted to try her out (so far im impressed). Aerie I wanted really because of the thing with Haer'dalis, which also means I had to have Haer'dalis in (plus I like bards). So, that left a space open for the thief. I really wanted Mazzy or Keldorn but I need a thief so I had to make sacrifices. If only you could have 7 NPCs and then I could have had my perfect party, heh.

Now, what should I do about the thief? Originally I thought about taking in Viconia and using Shadowkeeper to multi-class her to a thief. Other than that, who would you suggest I should take? Jan maybe? Or Nalia? Do you know of any Mod NPC thieves that are well made and supply me with ample banter and interjections?

Thanks for the assist

Jan definantly. Even though his alignment is chaotic neutral, he is sort of good-aligned.

Andyr 01-03-2005 10:50 AM

I'd suggest Yoshimo over Jan... You've already got a reasonable amount of arcane power in there.

Sir Degrader 01-03-2005 10:51 AM

If you want imoen, then get Yoshimo, then replace him when he will likely screw up (HINT HINT). With Jan, you have to keep him for the game or at least ditch him and never see him in the area you are going to go to.

Kestrel Daystar 01-03-2005 11:16 AM

Yeah, I will probably go with Yoshimo then. Then pick up Imoen.

Is the Viconia thing a no-no then?

Bah, personally, i HATE Yoshimo. And Imoen is a dual theif, she stopped the theif training at level 6. But if you want to fill out her item slots with theif enhancing items, feel free to do so.

Jan is a multiclass theif/illusionist, so he will keep gaining levels in his theif class. Plus he has got a GREAT personality.

Can't speak about mod NPC thieves, though there are a few. This party REALLY wants Korgan or Mazzy, though... as is Jaheira's your only front-liner that doesn't require extensive prep/buffing.

If you really want long-term high-skill roguery, Jan's the best option. If you only require trap detection and removal, Imoen is fine for that, and will give you high-level mage abilities much more quickly than Jan.

Kestral
Keto
Haer'Dalis
Jaheira
Aerie
Jan / Imoen

I'd really strongly consider ditching Haer'Dalis and possibly Aerie also, to fit in Korgan and/or Mazzy.

Kestral
Keto
Mazzy
Jaheira
Aerie
Jan / Imoen

With that party, you have two dedicated front-liners, two dedicated rear-casters, and two Bards that can play either position as the situation dictates. That being said, I can see the allure of having one bard casting, one bard singing, and one bard fighting all at once.

Magness 01-03-2005 06:17 PM

I'd suggest Jan as well. While Jan isn't strong in all thieving skills, he *is* strong in the two most important once, Find/Disable Traps and Open Locks.

Kestrel, your party looks SERIOUSLY underpowered. THREE bards???? I always am hard pressed to include even one, but three???

Jahiera is a good tank, particularly later in the game after she's had a chance to level up in Fighter and get Iron Skins.

This party is crying out for another tank.

Kestrel Daystar 01-03-2005 06:41 PM

Here’s how I use all my party members:

Kestrel - Elf - Bard - Primarily a fighter
Jaheira - Elf - Druid - Essential fighter
Aerie - Elf - Mage/Cleric - Offensive arcane spellcaster
Keto - Human - Bard - Primarily used for the Bard song
Haer'dalis - Tiefling - Bard - Primarily used as defensive arcane spellcaster

Kestrel does rather well at fighting on the front line. He and Jaheira make a good fighting team (Kestrel with Daystar and Jaheira with Spectral Brand). I equip Haer'dalis with alot of buffing and defensive spell and had him learn them, and Aerie with alot of offensive evocation spells and had her learn them. Keto is good for the Bardsong, and I have equipped her with a longbow +2 and arrows of biting.

All in all I am doing pretty well. Haven’t had too many problems. I managed to get the level of Lum the Mad in Watchers Keep. I just need that sixth place filling.

Your party seems to have an overabudance of bards, why not scrap Keto and get, say, Korgan and replace Haer with Edwin, so as to get maximum offensive power?

Illumina Drathiran'ar 01-03-2005 07:27 PM

I'd say that was a good idea if this party wasn't neutral leaning towards good and Korgan and Edwin wouldn't last long... I do agree that you should lose a bard, perhaps Haer, and then you can get Mazzy like you wanted to.

Sillara of the Tamari 01-04-2005 12:00 AM

If you want a thief, I would go with Fade from CoM. She is a single-classed thief, available as soon as you pay off Gaelan Bayle. I sympathize with wanting to have party made up of the people you like, so try that!

Kestrel Daystar 01-04-2005 06:58 PM

This 'Fade', have you play her through before? Is she well made? Does she fit into the story well?

I do like playing through as my party, even if it means me being weak. Im not bothered about that, aslong as I can survive, which I seem to be at the minute. I may take yours advices though and swap Haer'dalis for Mazzy. Hmmm...

take imoen if you want somebody to fit the story better, and a better mage. she is all the thief you need, but is far from what a thief can become.

take jan if you want backstabbing, and a thief that can do something other than just open locks and disarm traps

I think this is a good idea. If you like Viconia, and you need a theif, just do that. Personalli I dont see any harm in it to be honest.

Alternativly you could do the same with Mazzy, I mean, you could make her a theif/fighter and then have the theif aswell as the tank aspect.

Whats everybody think?

I've been playing a game with Fade in it & she's pretty nicely done, IMO. I haven't been through the whole game yet, and she's got a couple of minor Beta bugs left, but she fits into the storyline very well & the writing is good.

I'm not sure if you'd be able to pick her up if you've already done the tasks for Aran, but it might be worth a try to solve your Thief issues.
