Hi everyone, I'm new here *wave*

So glad I found this forum...some of the topics have been *heaps* of help to me in making my way through SoA. This is my second time through the game, the first time I bombed out in the Underdark somewhere. I'm making much better progress this time.

My current party members are:

Tristynn --> Human Paladin/Inquisitor
Minsc
Valygar
Jaheira
Imoen
Aerie

What do you think of this party setup? The first three make great tanks, and I'm in a romance with Jaheira. My party is good-aligned, so I didn't want to have Edwin, but I needed a good spellcaster so i chose Aerie. Was this smart?
I don't really have a strong theif. Imoen's abilities are better than Nalia's, but they still kinda suck. Yoshimo has already died because of the gias thing.
And I adore minsc ;)

Opinions appreciated!

Tanith.

Welcome to the forum!

You have a pretty "classic" party. Plenty of tanks (you can include Jaheira as a tank once she gets ironskins), enough theiving skills in Imoen, and plenty of spells with Imoen, Jaheira, and Aerie. You can find threads where people argue about whether Aerie sucks or whether she rules. My opinion is that at higher levels Aerie is extremely powerful (though still just as annoying). Imoen is usually enough mage for me, and I almost never use Edwin because I can't stand the arrogant fool.

Stick with your group, they should do just fine.

Oh, and good luck with that Jaheira romance... You can find quite a few threads on that topic here at IW as well.

Aerie is a bit of a liability at low levels, but once she gets enough exp she becomes god-like. Jan makes a good thief, but you can get by with just Imoen.

SixOfSpades 10-04-2004 06:51 PM

As long as she has roughly 90% or better in both Find Traps and Open Locks, she's enough Thief to carry the party. Things like Picking Pockets and Setting Traps are negligible, and Invisibility Potions take care of Stealth anyway.

You've got 3.5 Warriors, .5 Thieves, 1.5 Mages, and 2 half-Priests, one from each side of the Priest scroll, and everyone is of Good or Neutral alignment. Yeah, you'll do fine.

rily83 10-04-2004 10:39 PM

Actually if you have two stars in two handed sword and two handed weapon style you would be a great tank for a paladin already. Minsc and Valgyr are pretty helpful support. Have you considered Mazzy instead of Valgyr? She is better at ranged, and Valgyr cant wear plate if you want him to stealth. It would be better to have one v gd mage instead of 2 subclassed ones for the important heavy spells like abi dalzims but thats ok too, cos at least you have jaheira and insect plague. Pretty decent line-up overall.

krunchyfrogg 10-05-2004 01:35 AM

I dislike Valygar, but the setup is a very solid one.

Sonic 10-07-2004 11:39 AM

I would say that Jan Jansen is Probely the best thief in the game + He got some real nice spells as a illusionist. And dount forget he is damn funny.I would go whit You,Aeris,Jaheira,Jan,Minsc,Valygar/Keldoran.

Moon-Child_Lman 10-07-2004 11:47 AM

Jan is a good illusionist and very very funny , but he is not the best thief in the game. The best thief is Yoshimo. Even though you don't get to keep him that much.

He's not a traitor. I understand him. He didn't want to do it. He was made to do it, or die. Because of the Geas and freakin Irenicus. So, it's not his fault..

Well any way you can only have him to chapter 4 so i would go whit Jan Jansen. He is by far the better of the 2 in my opinion.

Actually if your game isn't Baldurdashed, you can do a trick and keep him.

Sonic 10-07-2004 02:14 PM

I Realy Wonder how MANY people who uses Yoshimo when they play Through Baldurs gate 2.I have played whit party trough it atleast 11 times and i only used him on my first trie.I would not realy call him a npc becouse he is only whit you trough half the game. This is MY opinion so dount blow my head off when i step outside my door pleas .

Sonic, I can't say much for your spoiler tags. Anyone reading your post would have about 2 microseconds to read the word "Spoilers" and think, "Gee, maybe I might not want to read any farther," and of course by that time they've already read your entire first sentence. When giving away spoilers of this nature (here and in the Valygar thread), at least put a few blank lines

between your spoiler tag and the actual spoiler. Writing the spoiler tag in a different color is also a plus.

I've been on Ironworks for years, and I have NEVER seen anyone complain about the betrayal and angrily accuse us (forum members in general) of letting him fall into that trap without warning him. On the other hand, I HAVE seen lots and lots of people complain about being spoiled on some facet of the game that they would really have preferred to find out about on their own.

krunchyfrogg 10-07-2004 04:51 PM

I love using the guy because of his storyline.

There's this funny moron thing we like to do called roleplaying...

Riftmaker 10-07-2004 07:37 PM

I dunno, the only time I keep Yoshi is when I'm gonna switch him for Imoen. Usually I end up going:

Warrior/Rogue Classes:

PC
Anomen
Viki/Aerie
Minsc if Aerie, otherwise Nalia.
Jan
Chap5->Imoen.

Priest:

PC
Anomen/Aerie/Viki
Minsc if Aerie, otherwise Mazzy / Keldorn.
Nalia
Jan
Chap5->Imoen

Wizard:
PC
Anomen
Aerie
Minsc
Yoshi->Chap5 Imoen

Dave_the_quack 10-08-2004 12:17 AM

Sonic, I really have to agree with Six on this one. Your spoiler tags really DO need to have some work... it is the format you are using that ruined that particular spoiler for me in the first place.

I know you started in the right direction with putting the spoiler tag in there in the first place, but yeah, a lil more consideration next time, k buddy?

As to the original thread, yes Tanith, you will definately have no problems with the game with that particular party setup. Good luck ;)

Tanith 10-09-2004 12:39 AM

Thanks for your opinions... I can't understand why some people don't like Valygar! I have him dual-wielding the Celestial Fury and his own Katana, plus he's got that kick-ass family armour of his that more than makes up for the fact that he can't wear splint/plate. He's fantastic for backstabbing, and his stats are overall *VERY* solid. He's my best character, a great scouter as well, as his 'hide in shadows' is very good.

Maybe not the most loveable character though, that'd be Minsc and Boo ;)

Yes, Aerie is becoming *extremely* useful as she approaches higher levels. She's level 13 right now, and damn talented. I have Throne of Bhaal installed, so I think she'll be awesome by that stage of the game :D Irritating personality though... what a whiner.

Tanith.

krunchyfrogg 10-09-2004 02:54 AM

I dislike him because I find his personlity booring.

He is a good fighter, though, I'll give him that.

Tanith 10-11-2004 08:33 AM

Oh...the personality
Yes, he's not the most interesting of people...but he's nice enough and earns his keep ten-fold with his fighting skills.

I find Aerie's personality more annoying, personally :D

Tanith.

Feral 10-11-2004 09:01 AM

If you install Unfinished Business, Valygar's personality/history will be filled out a little more.

Neo the Warrior Cat 10-12-2004 09:43 PM

Psst, Valygar can't wear full-plate anyway. :D
One of the restrictions of being a Stalker.

Xzirox 10-13-2004 04:24 AM

Id remove Aerie since Imoen is good enough as a spell caster, and take Jan Jansen since he's VERY good as a theif...

Riftmaker 10-13-2004 11:28 AM

However, Imoen will do perfectly fine for whatever thieving skills you need. If you come across a lock she can't open...well...what did you think Knock was for anyway?

Also, removing your only cleric (and only person that can cast restoration) isn't exactly smart. Having to leave Bodhi's lair in the middle of going through it because you have to go get someone restored will get annoying. Also, you WILL regret not having Sunray / False Dawn / Chant / Bless etc.
