Dimension Door is (was) a Level 4 Alteration spell, available in Baldur's Gate 1. BioWare decided not to include it in Baldur's Gate 2, however, for lots of good reasons: - There are several locations in the game that are marked as "triggers." Walking over them will cause a script to run. These scripts could cause any number of things to happen, and BioWare did not want gamers to intentionally avoid any bad things by Dimension Dooring past the triggers.
- On a similar note, gamers using Dimension Door might accidentally jump over triggers that were supposed to start a critical part of the plot, or supply the player with a key piece of information, or whatever. In a less serious fashion, the player might still step on all the triggers, but in the wrong order.
- Having characters that can Dimension Door past obstacles at will imposes great restrictions on the people designing the map areas. For instance, in BG1 there is an important bridge that you must cross in order to reach the BG city itself. But that bridge is not open until Chapter 5, because BioWare wanted to make the city off-limits to you until then. But a player with Dimension Door could simply jump directly across the gap in the bridge, thus breaking the plot of the game. (BioWare's solution to this: Scrolls of Dimension Door cannot be obtained before Chapter 5, not even as random drops.)
- Dimension Door could be used to render melee opponents completely helpless. If you're under seige by enemies with no (or relatively weak) ranged attacks, you could employ the cheesy tactic of Dimension Dooring to a spot inaccessible by foot (such as the outside balcony of Saerk Fahrrad's Estate), and pick off your enemies with spells or missiles at your lesiure, thus abusing a weakness of the IE engine and making the fight completely unrealistic.
There is no way for a legitimate character to use Dimension Door in BG2. It cannot be selected as one of your Starting Spells, as it does not appear on the list. (Amendment: It may just be possible to get DD if you use the "Pick For Me" button. It appears to pick spells at random, and I have heard rumors of non-Wild Mages receiving spells that were supposed to be Wild-Mage only.) It is true that Weimer added Dimension Door to Solaufein's spellbook (or perhaps as an innate ability, one of the two), and I readily understand why. Not only does he Dimension Door constantly while running around in Ust Natha (and it'd be pretty stupid to have him "forget" that spell just because he joined you), but I'm sure we all get *really* tired of being the ONLY people in all of Faerun who can't cast Dimension Door.
Note that although the 4 reasons I listed above, why BioWare denied the players' access to Dimension Door, are all very valid and proper reasons, it is STILL not a cheesy spell. Players can still use it whenever they wish, provided that they understand each of the 4 reasons, and are mature enough not to exploit the spell. This is precisely what Weimer meant when he said "don't abuse it."
