I solved them ages ago, but the thing is: Is there a way to kill that evil guy? I got him down to 'Near Death'when I somehow managed to attack him before he got away, but he never actually died...he was on Near Death for 3 1/2 hours!
Is it a bug?
Help appreciated...

Sparhawk 05-22-2003 12:19 PM

Unfortunately you cannot kill the Skinner in his home. Of course if you play further along in the game, you will meet again, most assuredly. However, the skinner quest is a massive undertaking, a side quest that IMO is quite extensive. I won't say more, but as stated before, the skinner will escape from his home no matter how much you bash, mash, stomp, and whomp him.

"he was on Near Death for 3 1/2 hours!"

Is it possible that you tried to fake-talk him?
This can result in invulnerability for some quest-crucial enemies (like Jon Irenicus or Valygar's ancestor in the Planar Sphere) who are not supposed to die at this point in the game.

After doing the skinner quests, I did once hunt for a decent length of time for the animal trainer in the circus, in order to identify the elephant hide...

Is there anyway of meeting him, or do you have to challenge...

It's nothing to do with fake talk as he is scripted not to die. As mentioned you meet him again.

Faceman 05-24-2003 10:30 AM

Yeah but he is supposed to leave and not stand around Near Death for 210 minutes!
AFAIK enemies only do that if they are scripted not to die and are fake-talked to kill.
By the way: Skinner is a top-rewarding sidequest if you are evil ;)

Zarr 05-24-2003 11:22 AM

Yes but sometimes if you hit enemies too hard too fast that are scripted to talk they just stand there doing nothing. It's the same with the skinner murderer because he's scripted not to die and if you attack him too hard to fast he just stands there doing nothing instead of running away. I've had this happen myself with both him and Lavok and I've never used fake talk in my life.

EDIT:Oh and I forgot to say Faceman I'm not disputing that fake talk can cause this to happen as I've heard about it myself with eg kangaxx but my point is it can also happen without using fake talk and I think in this instance he wasn't using fake talk ;) .

Agreed!
Hitting an enemy hard before his circle turns red (I suppose this is what you mean) from the point of role-playing may be correct but is in fact scriptwise identical to fake-talk for the program. As it is perfectly ethical to score the first strike on an evil creature such as Hidesman it may lead to problems. So I will go with Gnoman's suggestion from his first topic. It is kind of a bug.

When you approach a certain merchant in the town of Imnesvale he will ask you for your name. Answer right and maybe he'll finish the job Hidesman started.
You can easily figure out the answer if you keep the note in mind.

I don't know about "easily"--even I had problems working it out until I figured out the funky syntax, and cryptography is sort of a hobby for me.

</font>
I was able to answer/solve every riddle in the game easily without an error, except for that one. I ended up having to do the guess/reload cheat, so it is definitely not easy. I imagine if you copied the note down onto paper, found the merchant stated above, and just kept the options up on the screen for an hour while you sat with pen and paper and worked on it, you could probably figure it out. But cryptography is NOT a hobby of mine, and it was a pain.

Faceman 05-24-2003 06:53 PM

Maybe I just guessed right but I honestly thought I had deciphered it.
And cryptography is not really a hobby of mine more a spleen.

Decrypted, it reads: "I wonder if you will be able to read this message?"

It's called the Pendulum code, and if you take a good, hard look, you'll see why. It's a lot more fun than your basic substitution cypher (especially those lame "Caesar ciphers"), at least in my opinion.

</font>
Not a veteran in encryption, but I understood how it worked after you gave me the name of the code.

Start in the middle and go right, then left, then right+1, then left+1, etc... ...

It is nice to be as modest as you are, Sixxy...

As for pendulum, nice one!
It is easy to get it when you ponder why the question mark is there where it is.
