Lets imagine that there is no thief in your party, just a sorcerer, inquisitor and fighter/cleric. What about the traps ? The way what I use is to activate the trap and see its damage then I'm loading the game, I'm casting the appropriate protection and I'm activating the trap again. Do you know any more intelligent way ?

You could use detect traps with your fighter/cleric and then try to avoid them ... thats about all you can do though :(

Jon Irenicus 05-15-2003 05:30 AM

Or just memorise where all the traps r and avoid them... If they are not avoidable(some arent) just let one of ur character tank them ;)

TaSSaDaR 05-15-2003 05:34 AM

Make your sorc cast Mirror Image. That would shrug off most traps' damage

In spec. cases, you would want to fall back to your prev. tacktic (PWK trap in ahem... somewhere closely related to all spellcasters ) Or just sacrifice a summon once you detect the trap with your cleric.

With the exception of those rare traps that do area damage rather than target specific damage you should have no trouble dealing with traps with a combination of Stoneskin, Mirror image and Minor spell deflection.

Xen 05-15-2003 02:21 PM

Mages,Sorcerers,Druids have Ironskins and Stoneskins...
Clercis have find traps spell...
Fighters relay on raw power and saves i guess...

Brilliant idea, though you'll have to wait for a few level ups I think, have your magic user cast project image or simulacrum(however it's spelled I don't care, really). and send the clone through the traps. Beware area effect traps though.

No much more effiecent to use a low level summoning spell if you are going to do it like that... monster/animal summoning I both come to mind ;)

Summons can trigger traps? I never knew that...

TaSSaDaR 05-16-2003 05:52 AM

Just once I tried to use a summon to trigger a trap - in Bodhi's Gauntlet, THAT nasty trap, and it refused to be triggered by summon, but my familiar worked pretty cool... had to reload, of course :(

It's an inconsistent behavior - sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, some traps will always trigger, some traps will never trigger... who knows. But it's usually worth the shot if you have expendable summons - e.g., Wand of Fodder.

I hate that trap, no way to disarm it and when I tried it killed Imoen! Anyway to do so without a death?

TaSSaDaR 05-16-2003 09:33 AM

It may be a bug, but sometimes it just refuses to trigger, other times my hasted characters manage to pass it before it clangs, and other times I just sacrifice a familiar, dimension-door over it...

If everything fails, what if you use Ctrl-J??

You don't need to go through that trap you can go around it. ;)

if it's the one i'm thinking of (and i've always called it "that NASTY trap" in my head, too) you can send everyone thru safely, one a time. better success rate than running thru in a group.

apparently my chars are much smarter than i. because it was aerie (with her terrible pathfinding) who revealed to me that it could be blithely walked around. meanwhile little immy (so dumb sometimes) bolted thru but stopped just this side of safety and got smooshed. of course then vicky refused to make a decision and stood there, holding up the line altogether. trying to gauge the timing, i guess. ;)

so, there i was. shown all the possibilities in one sitting. :D

Regarding "That Nasty Trap," I've occasionally run into a situation where if I send a Summoned creature through to trigger it (twice! must be done twice! ), the character who Summoned the creature dies when the Summon gets squished.

I'm fully patched & all that, of course, so what I've found is that if you have someone Summon something (Imoen is usually good since she arrives with a couple of useless Summons), then have that character run back past the riddle room, then send the Summons through, everything works out fine (meaning the trap triggers [twice], but no harm to the Summoner).

Maybe it's just me, but I have NEVER been able to trigger a trap with a summons. They and charmed monsters can dance on traps all day, but the moment one of the characters get close they get nailed. I recently installed the latest patch, so maybe this is fixed in my game. But I can't tell you how many times I tried to use the Wand of Useless Summons to send some gnolls out to die, and they just walk right over the stupid trap without triggering it.

I didn't know about Mirror Image and Minor Spell Deflection, though. Good to know, as I am planning to play another all-good party next, and Nalia will be my thief until Imoen gets rescued (yes, I can hear the groans already ;) ). Has anyone ever been able to bash a chest? That's the other thing that I have never been able to do, even with strength belts. Chests in my game might as well be made of adamantium. But, like I stated, I did install the patch, so may be fixed now.
