Dawnbringer Sain in the Temple of Lathander is supposed to ask me to retrieve a ring for him. But, when I go to talk to him, he just wants to kill me. Guardian Telwyn keeps telling me to go talk to him and do whatever he says. But, he still just wants to kill me. What is going on. Has this happened before.

Did you happen to steal something from their temple recently? Say... for Mae'Var?

Most likely if you have an evil character, you've had to steal a trinket from his temple before. If you have, then that's most likely why he wants to kill you.

No, it depends on your alignment, if your evil you go get a statuette from the other temple.

Terts, you have the air of one who's playing his first game of BG2 with his nose glued to a walkthrough.

....if you can't speak to him, how could you know what he's "supposed" to ask you to do? Here is my advice to you: Get rid of the dang walkthrough, and try to roleplay. It's more fun, and you're less inclined to do things like, "Hey, I think I'll rob this church and see if they've got anything good." (And if you're told to rob the church, a roleplayer would consider the situation carefully, and realize that there might be fewer people around at night-time.)

To further clarify the issue at hand, there are TWO outcomes from Mae'Var's first task.

1) He asks you to steal a necklace from the Priestess of Talos in the Temple of Talos.

2) He asks you to steal a statutte(sp?) from the Temple of Lathander. Which understandably makes them upset for ever and ever.

That is confirmed.

The other issue I am more fuzzy about, but if memory serves me well... it is not alignment, but reputation that determines which quest you do.

Checked it, and found out the item is named, "Statuette of Lathander". Dang... missed an 'e'. [img]tongue.gif[/img]

As for the "can we avoid flipping off the PoLathander while stealing their statuette"... I have not heard of any success stories yet, mainly due to the damnable undisarmable alarm trap. :mad:

Actually, they are both English and they have different meanings, or rather, different usages.
To say that it is a statue is correct, but if you say that it is a statuette, you are informing the person that it is a small figurine, and thus, convey much more accurate information about the object.

ahh that's what the statuette I lifted from them is for (my F/T/M has very light fingers and got the quest for the talonites)

I can confirm that it is reputation, not alignment, that determines the target Mae'Var sends you for, as my LG paladin (rep. of 9) was told to rip off the Lathendites.

I have been able to steal from the Lathanderites and not have them eternally angry at me. The secret is... Well, I wont tell you the secret cause then it would no longer be a secret!

? You do not happen to mean Sanctuary do you? Last I recall, somebody did try to use that tactic but the Priests still got mad at him... ...

I too managed to get the stauette of lathander without turning them hostile (I know coz it's still in my sack at the Copper Coronet), unfortunately I can't add anything clever, coz I have no recollection of how I actually achieved it. I DON'T think it was related to sanctuary.

Lathanderites, Talassans, Helmites.

Wow, you guys get so complicated... try keeping your party out of the temple, and sending in your thief alone to do the job... of course, mine at the time was Jan, and he used a combination of improv.invis and knock...

Meh, ive never had luck stealing from the temple of Lathandar without getting caught. it usually doesnt matter, unless you happen to be a priest of lathandar or a good aligned cleric in need of a stronghold ;)

Anyone know what mae'var will make you do if you fit into the rep category to get the stauette from Lathandar's temple, but you are a priest of Lathandar? that would really suck... [img]graemlins/hehe.gif[/img]
