Grok- is Attacking Alhoon
Grok- Attacks Alhoon
Grok- Attack Roll 12 + 7 = 19 : Hit
Alhoon- Psionic Blast : Grok
Alhoon- Attacks Grok
Alhoon- Undead destroyed
Alhoon- Death
The Party Has Gained Experience: 10000
Alhoon, if you don't recall, is the guy in charge of the mind flayers in the sewers. I had no idea he was undead. So far this game, at least two bosses, Alhoon and the Shade Lord, died in the first round from a non-upgraded Azuredge. And the Shade Lord Battle is also a little humorous. (Sorry. Didn't do a screen shot with more of the dialog.)
Quote:

Shade Lord- Undead destroyed
Shade Lord- Death
Mantis- You shall have to kill me first. We've...
Shade Lord- Bravado, of course. Your kind...
I guess it makes sense that the Shade Lord might be a little unclear on the concept of death, but it usually means you stop talking...

Thorfinn 03-01-2003 02:01 PM

He is not really a boss, but the Shade Lich with the golden arms and legs also went down in the very first swing, before Improved Mantle went up. I reloaded just to see how tough he was supposed to be, and let him do his thing before I went after him. Still not too bad, just two AbuHW, a couple Mazes, but I made sure to keep drinking the Sup Healing potions to keep me above 90 HP, so the power words wouldn't take me out...

Alhoon is a Mind Flayer / Lich.

Thorfinn 03-01-2003 02:21 PM

Mind Flayer/Lich? Really? Why is he only worth 10k XP? The Lich in the Temple Ruins was worth 22k, IIRC. Or was that the Bone Golem? Seems to me one of them was 18k, the other 22k, I thought. Though ever since I turned 40, I found that memory is not my strong suit anymore...

IIRC there's a little upgrade which makes him a tad bit more difficult .. but give more XO also
I think it's part of tacticsmod

Yes it is

masteraleph 03-01-2003 06:08 PM

Actually, Alhoon wouldn't be is name, it's what he is. Odd that the mind flayers were working with him though, since IIRC, mind flayers don't really like alhoons usually?

daan 03-01-2003 06:17 PM

They live in the sewers ... they went pretty low already if you ask me.
Might as well take an alhoon as leader to add to the insult, doesnt matter anymore.

On a more serious note,.. I would like to know why a mindflayer/lich was chosen and not a Ularithiid or something.. any ideas ?

Arias De'Minal 03-01-2003 07:32 PM

Maybe because poele like me would lay on the ground in a fetel position if I ran across one in the game. ( I always hurry through mine and miss 85-90% of the subquests.)

i dont think there is a lich in the temple ruins. IMO the bone golem is the hardest monster in that area, not that he is hard The shade lord is a piece of toast once his altar is gone.

Brainless One 03-01-2003 10:06 PM

Um...where do you find Azuredge, and what do you need to upgrade it?(If you can)

The Undead creatures in the Temple Ruins vary greatly with the party's level. Depending on whether you're just starting out or you've already been to Spellhold and back, you can find anything from Mummies to Liches in there. (Although I think the Bone Golem on the other side of the "letter tiles" is constant.)

Dace De'Briago 03-01-2003 11:39 PM

You buy Azuredge from the Copper Coronet.

If you have the item upgrade mod installed, a little illithium can be used to coat the axe. +4 insta-death to undead anyone? Oh, and it also makes you immune to level drain

Sexy eh

Brainless One 03-01-2003 11:44 PM

Copper Coronet is a store? Or is it one of those dang "bonus merchants"? I need to find a spot where you can download them.

An Alhoon isn't so much a Lich as it is an undead Mind Flayer (meaning more resistances). Think of him more as a Mind Flayer/Vampire. A Lich is more powerful - an Alhoon doesn't have the spell power a Lich does.

On a related topic, from the Forgotten Realms books I've read, even Improved Illithids don't inspire the dread I'd come to expect from them.

Although, I must admit, when I first played through SoA & met The Hidden (before meeting any other Illithids, even after Windspear - just based on the NPC's I added), it struck a chord of terror in me - I was like "RUN AWAY!!! RUN AWAY!!!" even though he isn't a threat - now, I don't fear them much...

Damn I feel special cause here's one I can answer!

Copper Coronet is the Inn located in the Slums district. The rather rotund fellow at the far left by the counter, Bernard, will sell you stuff... and the stuff will be even cheaper once you do a certain Copper Coronet related quest.

FWIW, certain items, like Azuredge, are only available from Bernard after the Copper Coronet related quest is performed.

Thorfinn 03-02-2003 04:47 AM

What SixOfSpades said, except that with the tactics mod, enabling the toughest encounters gives you the lich right out of the gate. So you can easily be facing liches by the time you are 10th level...

And you don't necessarily have to finish the slave quest to get the cheaper goods from the Copper Coronet -- all you have to do is accomplish one of the results of freeing the slaves...

As for bonus merchants, do a search on this site for Weimer or WeiDu and you will probably get a link to his site where you can get all kinds of cool stuff, including the bonus merchants. Those may be bundled under ease of use. I don't recall exactly...

daan 03-02-2003 04:51 AM

He's a Mindflayer/Lich alright.
It's just that he doesnt use his spells .. the same thing with mind flayers almost not using their special abilities.
Improved mindflayers use their abilities a bit better and the tactics-mod also gets Alhoon to use his spells. He is not a vampire, definetly a lich.
But if you want to meet vampiric Illiithids, just buy ToB ;)

While I'm sure that there are other places that it can be downloaded, here is one - http://www.baldurdash.org/SoAtweaks/...DMerchants.zip

Even though it is a SoA "tweak" I can assure you (from personal experience) that it ts ToB safe.

To begin the Copper Coronet quest talk to Lehtinan and get him to let you into the back rooms. You do this by...........
.

.
S
P
O
I
L
E
R
.
.
.
.
telling him that you have coin you wish to dispose of, and that you want to spend it on something other than food, drink, or rest.
