If you have trouble coming up with original names, and are tired of stealing names from book characters, like I am, try the Fantasy Name Generator
Thank you to SixofSpades for the link in here :D [ 02-02-2003, 09:55 PM: Message edited by: Olorin ] |
My (current) character's name is Flynn Fairbanks - in case you couldn't guess he's a swashbuckler :D
When I used to play gnomes with PnP 1st edition AD&D I used to like to use names like Mordecai, Aloisius, and Xavier - to me a good Gnome berserker name would be something like Mordecai the Mindless. |

Other times I use charcter names from books-Tahkisis, Gaeleron, Tanthul, Artemis, Jarlaxle, etc. |

I'm currently playing a half-orc sellsword named...Uruk'hai. Hmmm, I wonder why...
I tend to name for historical and mythological figures. Paladins have been Alexander (as in the Great) or Judah (as in Maccabbee), rangers have been Aragorn and Robin Hood, sorcerers (I don't like wizards) have been Gandalf, Merlin, Arta Mydrin (for those who read that series...i wanna say Rosenberg wrote them but could be wrong)...I had a chaotic bard way back when, can't remember if the name was Robin Goodfellow or Puck, but greatly fun character |
geez my prot mage is simply called
Bane also had one called Whisper. Quote:

One of my multiplayer characters was named Crooky Furrytails. Oh, and did I mention that he was a squirrel? ;)
|
In any fantasy game, a noble Paladin-type character is always 'Sir Luther Delga'arde', give or take the 'sir' depending on whether knighting is a common thing.

Something from a AD&D books or books like tolkien ect.? just wanna know because the nicks on this forum all seem really meaningfull (it has a ''history'').. just wonderd because in my other thread people come with al sorts of explenations about there nicks :D |

I make up all my role playing names myself. i just think of the class, and race, and portrait, and just figure out a cool sounding name that fits it. Hell, i even thought of Arundel before i had even seen IWD ;) (of course, my Arundel was a warrior, not a archdruid)
Edit: My friend uses the name Fippy Darkpaws (LOL) as a halfling thief, he got it from another character in dark age of camelot [ 02-08-2003, 10:43 AM: Message edited by: Xero279 ] |

Paladins: Sir Sparhawk and Lady Ehlana Mages: Myrddin L'argenton, Polgara Stormcast Bards: Storm Windblade and Taliesin Spellmusic. |

Jatelka: Female monk, just thought it sounded vaguely oriental and fit with the
paper doll. Tethys: Female ranger, after the primordial ocean. Malinde: Female fighter mage, vaguely tolkienesque (although none of those little dotty things over the "e" sadly)! |
My characters have been called
Meerkin Sirk (Warrior) Natalie Quickspell (A mage who uses a lot of haste spells, and sequencers to make spell casting quicker) Nathaniel Firefingers (A bard who used a lot of Burning Hands Spells) Pellor of the Light (Neutral Good drow sorceror) Eldori of the Dark (Neutral Evil drow sorceror, he and Pelor agrued a lot) Elistrae Loremaster ( Lorekeeper of Oghma on IWD2. I'm quite proud of that one) Natalie Strongbough (Ranger) Matthias Fleetstride (Monk) Archibald Flapjack (Don't ask) Chris Stringpluck (Bard) To make up your own I'd suggest one of two methods; 1. Think about the character. Any aspects that jump out at you about how you intend to play him/her. If there is any spell that they tend to use over another consistently try bring that in, eg Sessifelts the Wilter (Abi Dalzim's Horrid Wilting). Or a weapon; if a character starts out hghly proficient in bows, try Fletcher as a surname. Fletcher is a name that tends to belong to families that have been involved with the construction of arrows for many generations. 2. Take an existing name or word and change the letters around, or extend it in some way. eg Alex becomes Alexander, becomes xelander. Seven becomes Sevan, Sever or Vesen. |

I recommend Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable as a wonderful source of tales and names... for out of there I plucked:
Tancred - the naive Cavalier hero. Name taken from the histories of the First Crusade, in which Tancred was the greatest of the Templar heroes. Played as a pure, noble, amiable hero throughout the saga who never really understood the importance of what he was. Malvolio - a swish evil Assassin. Name taken from a character in Shakespeare, but as it translates as 'He who wants bad things to happen' he was always going to be Evil. Played as a man who liked doing evil because he thought it made him look good, and who embraced every power that came his way. A charming devil. Diocletian - the bitter aethiest Wizard. Name taken from the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who so persecuted the Christians it was claimed he was the anti-christ. Played as a man who hated his heritage and fought to defeat his Father out of bitterness. A hard man to like. |
