So: I have lots of +3 weapons, and my characters are free-actioned (to thwart that annoying "hold" thing) I'm whacking on Balor with everything I got. but I haven't caused a SINGLE HP of damage. What am I doing wrong?

PS: I already pickpocketed the Light-gem from the king dwarf, so I guess I could go on without killing Balor, but dammit! It's the principle that counts/

All thoughts/suggestions appreciated millions!

There is no trick to beating him, just try to use high level spells like finge of death or something.. maybe you need better thac0 or something. i dunno, he didnt see that hard to me. just have one tank waiting for where he spawns then have a mage in the back blasting damaging spells and spells like breach or maybe even dispell magic. good luck

Edit: I got this monster confused with something else, so i put the wrong stategy oops, Fixed it though!

he's talking about the demon the gnomes in the underdarke mined. I think it cast protection from magical weapons so try spells like breach

Or Pierce Magic, or the infamous Ruby Ray of Reversal.

rhapsody407 01-26-2003 09:31 PM

balor...i've heard that name before, bungie's Myth: The Wolf Age, balor is a renicarnated hero from the wind age, connacht. He is evil now, and is heralding the switch of the world from being controlled by the forces of light to the forces of darkness. Any relation to him? (very doubtful..but where does the name have its roots, it'd be interesting for a gamer such as i to know)

pcgiant 01-26-2003 09:33 PM

AFAIK, Balor is a type of demon, like the Pit Field, so I don't think the name would have come from there.

I think i remember reading somewhere that to hit the balor you need +4 weapons or something. Or he might cast prot from magic weapons as Angelousss said. When i did it i just had keldorn with his +5 holy avenger sword (with +5 vs chaotic evil dudes) and minsc (dual wealding with frail of ages +3 and daystar) tank for the party and had valygar and mazzy shooting with bows, my pc (a mage) was casting pirce shield and despel magic. This way i took him down as easy as pie.

Funny, I don't remember him ever being at al difficult. In my experience, the only difficulty with him was that he was really good at taking my blow to the chest and not being affected. I only got in hits once in a while, but it was solid damage and I was patient, so in five or 10 minutes he was beaten, bruised, and running madly.

Decurion

P.S. I think MMM will hit him well also.
P.P.S. I don't think you need +5 weapons, or even +4.

Execpt they are different types of demons. the pit fiends are baatezu(demon i think) and balors are Tanarri (devils, IIRC). the baatezu live in the abyss, while Tanarri inhabit the nine hells, or then it was the other way around. not a 100% sure. if someone wants confermation, ask Memnoch.

Isn't it Baalor, or am I thinking of something else?

As with anything that spawns (or is neutral) traps are the way to go. Leave a half-dozen where he's going to appear.

Having said that I also seem to remember that just whacking the thing with a few big swords works wonders as well.

Raistlin Majere 01-27-2003 10:55 AM

ok, i got it the wrong way around. i checked at this thread, and found out that the baatezu are devils, meaning their the lawful sort, while the Tanarri are demons, making them chaotic. the baatezu inhabit the nine layers of hell, while the tanarri inhabit the, not sure how many but i think 3 or 4, layers of the abyss. you can actually figure this out if you have read the drizzt novels or if you read the dialogue of drizzt's company in bg2. Wulfgar is tortured by the True Tanarri Errtu, a balor, and then Bruenor says something like "ill send you to the abyss", and then Wulfgar answers, "ive been there, nothing special". from that we can find out that at least balors, who happen to be Tanarri, live in the abyss, meaning all Tanarri live in the abyss, because they would be killed in the nine hells, making them the chaotic demons everyone fears. there, that should shed some light into the basics of the inhabitants of the underworld.

only one question remains however, how can there be four demons with irenicus, wouldnt it be smarter to have four devils(baatezu) with him, since we are in THE NINE HELLS for gods sake. and further, how can a balor look like a pit fiend? is the reason to that so the glabrezu wont look excatly like the balor would? wheres the point in that, as the glabrezu isnt supposed to even look like that!

From what I can tell, nothing. You need +3 weapons or better to hit him with(Jerrod's Mace will NOT work), you need some form of Free Action to ward off his Paralytic Gaze, you need some sort of Protection from Fear, and he's still a formidable opponent. What surprises me is that you say you're not doing ANY damage to him. He doesn't Regenerate, and I'm assuming you're not trying to Tank him with your Mages.....does he seem to be immune to your weapons, or do your guys simply have crappy THAC0?

Baros 01-28-2003 04:21 AM

Or is Baalor a type of ale? My own personal demon at least.

Isnt this mace considered a +5 weapon against Demons/Devils? dont know, just got the bonus merchant mod. Strange thing is, i had Deidre before that, but not Joluv. Any specific reason for this?

Any specific reason for this?</font>
Ahh, the infamous confusion between enchantment to hit and THAC0/damage bonuses. The enchantment of the weapon doesn't necessarily have anything to do with its combat bonuses (e.g. a +3 weapon doesn't have to give a +3 bonus to hit and damage). Jerrod's Mace is a +2 enchanted weapon, that provides a bonus to hit and damage against demon kin. The enchantment of a weapon (AFAIK) is always constant, and will not change depending on the enemy being engaged. Daystar is another example of this, it enchantment always being 2, but granting an additional +2 to hit and damage against evil creatures.

Jerrod's mace is dumb though! A weapon specifically designed to beat the bejesus out of demons, but it can't destroy the Balor. They should have left the combat bonuses the same but made the overall enchantment +5 to get around this.

About the merchants, you would have had Diedrie after installing ToB (or is it after an official ToB patch?) but not Joluv. He is exclusive to the collectors edition/bonus merchants patch only.
