Hello,

I am currently playing an enchanter (the first spellcaster i make) in BG1. I want to take this char all the way from BG1 to ToB. I have not many damage-dealing spells so i have to play with the other ones.

I use charm (well only charm-person atm, i am level 4) a lot (RPing my ench hehe), and I have a few question about it.

1 - Will that kind of spell still be useful in BG2/ToB (wont it be resisted like mad and such) ?
2 - What other spells have the same purpose (and maybe not only on humanoids like charm-person)?

and most important :

3 - Do my charisma has anything to do with my charm efficiency ?

Thx for your help

Its quite hard to get the charm spell to work due to that most enemies is immune or they make a save.
In BG2 you could go for Domination, that works every now and then, though its most likely to fail on tougher enemies unless you cast a greater malison and maybe a lower resistance or two first. Even then they might be immune...

You'll be disappointed to know that in later stages of SoA, and even more so in ToB, every creature and his grandmother are immune to charm. As if common immunity was not enough, every enemy worth charming will make his save vs. spells 75% of the time. And then there's Magic Resistance...

So my enchanter is worthless eh ? :(
Can't even RP it correctly

I hope i'll find different tactics as the mobs become harder.

But for now (lvl 4 in BG1), I m having great fun with my pretty enchanter ; charming bandits and making them whack each other is something very pleasant to see

What about question 3 btw ? Noone knows ?

Butterfingers 01-15-2003 10:13 AM

I have an Enchanter fired up for SoA.

Charm person is not so good. However, Dire Charm, Chaos, Greater Malison, Emotion: Hopelessness, all of these have their uses and all of them are Enchantments. Also, Feeblemind is a down right evil spell.

So far, I have mainly used enchantments when a mage conjures something, like monsters. I had a memorable battle with a mage who casted protection from magic weapons, and, I was not prepared with non magic weapons stashed away. (Was still pretty new to the game) When the mage summoned a whole bunch of orges and war dogs, I Dire Charmed a few of them, and cast Chaos on the whole lot of them. The ogres and the bad doggies turned around and ripped their master apart.

Charisma has no effect whatsoever on spells in general, and Charm spells in particular.

Thx for the info
Sad though :(

Ah well...let's see how far i can go with an Enchanter

No problem... and... good luck. ;)

Emotion is such a fun spell. Nothing like beating your foes senseless while they lie on the ground..

Butterfingers 01-15-2003 02:50 PM

I disagree. Emotion is not a fun spell. Leaving your enemies on the ground aint no fun at all.

Now, casting Emotion and then gating in a pit fiend to rip the sleeping idiots into bits of bite sized fish bait, now that's great fun!

Or, cast Emotion and Insect Plague. Worst nights sleep they ever had in their lives. Slowly nibbled down by swarms of bugs. Or Creeping Doom for that matter. You see, a Mage has more options then just nuking his enemies into non existance. He can TORTURE them first making the whole experience so much more pleasurable. Did you know that Emotion is a GREAT spell for Mage/Thieves? I will give you a few minutes to figure out why.

Emotion and Stinking Cloud. Nothing like pinning your enemies down and forcing them to smell the worst flatulent feculent foul smelling fart like cloud you could imagine.

You fools, casting Emotion is only half of the fun. Come on, get with the program, be EVIL!! :D

I could be completely wrong here, and correct me if I am... but isn't this whole thread kinda semi-irrelevent ? because when you import from BG1 to BG2, doesn't your spell book get erased and you have to start over ?

unless I'm wrong, the only thing you need to consider is the limits on new spells in BG2, not which ones to get in BG1 (I mean, what will being an enchanter limit you to once you go to SoA). but then, can't you also choose a new kit as well ? ie. change mage specialty

Pyrenk 01-15-2003 06:14 PM

Butterfingers...Did I say that I dont do those things? I meant emotion by itself. Same thing as saying Timestop is fun-it is, but is even better with spells thrown in. I already do the Pit Fiend thing when I dont want to waste time fighting.

Masklinn 01-16-2003 07:54 AM

Karlosovic,

All the spells in BG1 can be found in BG2, so no my question is not irrevelent...I was just asking if the charm line of spells is as useful in BG2 than it is in BG1.

And yes your spellbook is erased but you still got to choose some spells you will have at the beginning.

I m not sure if you are able to change your specialization when you import from BG1. Need a confirmation on that one.

sorry if I sounded a bit rude there mate, just meant that you can choose all the charm spells you want in BG1 without having to be stuck with em in BG2. personally though, I've never found any use for any of them in either game, they sound cool but just never seem to work. charm, domination, dire charm... I always find enemies who can do them to me, but my own attempts always fail
