What is up with these Cowled wizards attacking me all over the Place? I have a rep of 11 and a nuetral good party so I try to be good but I have had to kill about of a dozen or so of these guys so far. I'm getting ready to visit Bohdi in the graveyard, so every time I get attacked by wandering Vampires The Cowled ones show up as I cast protection from negative plane energy. The last fight I lost 4 rep points just by killing 4 wizards. They were Red circled so I should'nt have lost the points right? Anyone have a clue as to avoid this? Will my ultimate triumph over Bohdi solve this issue? I figure if I destroy Her and her minions then the Vamps wont be attacking me so I won't need to cast so much magic in the city? Any help would be appreciated thanks

You are forbbiden to cast magic in Athkatla.Pay 5000 Gp to Tolgerias and this is it |
Or you can apparently just kill them all and eventualy they give up. I havent managed to do it yet though, playing homeworld and Sangband too much recently.
Anyway, they're not to tough and give fair XP, and the shoudnt cost any rep points either. Maybe you got an innocent by mistake, but I thought that cost 10 points. Weird. |
Yep, you gotta "pay the piper" if you're going to be casting magic in the city streets. Go to the Gov't District. You need to enter the very large building at the top of the map. You can pay your $5,000 gp inside there...then you can cast an Earthquake in the middle of the Temple District...and nobody will say word one to you. ;)
OR....as andrewas said, you can just keep killing them. Since you are playing a good party, you would probably want to pay the fee. But I'm playing an assassin who hates to part with any of his gold, so I just attack them when they show up. If you decide on this course of action, I recommend two things. First - DO NOT cast magic when attacked by thugs, bandits, or Bohdi's cronies in the streets. The LAST thing you need is 4 Cowled Enforcers showing up during the heat of a battle and joining sides with your enemies. Second - So I "draw them out" on my terms. Go into a building and cast all of your "buff" spells (Haste, Aid, etc, etc). Save one "buff" spell for your mage (like Mirror Image or Stoneskin). Go outside and cast the final spell on your mage. You're party is now "buffed and ready" for the Enforcers when they show up. Fight them on YOUR terms...not theirs. Just out of curiosity, does anybody know how long it takes for the Enforcers to quit showing up? |
As far as i know, the sixth or seventh time you'll get a warning, and the time after that you'll fight the Big Cahuna... ;)
He isn't much better, by the way. Just some higher level spells than the others - but if he won't have the chance to cast those anyway, it matters not. ;) All are very vulnerable to Insect Plague, Traps, Skull Traps, etc... The usual Mage slaying tactics. |
and traps.
Lay a few traps, cast a spell. Watch them die. Rinse. Repeat. Spell cast at your leisure... Question is - can someone tell me an effect which *counts* as spellcasting that a solo Assassin could do? I believe that in unpatched versions that Hallowed Redeemer damage was a spell effect. I also know that true sight from the Thieve's Hood is (I once gave it to a thief via shadowkeeper). |
Juss turn into a mustard jelly with the cloak of sewers and soak up their magic!
Then slay them when they have no magic left! |
Thanks everyone, I have'nt had too much trouble killing them it just gets annoying after awhile. I think I'll pay the 5000 gps just to keep them off my back. Then later I'll go beserk and kill all the CWs I see ha ha ha

A solo assasin can us a scroll at higher levels.

I thought you could cast all the divine(priest) spells you want even in the city. the coweleds only come when you cast arcane(mage) spells within the city(unless you pay the five grand of course).
|
Two things.
Protection from negative plane protection is clerical and wouldn't set the Cowled Wizards after you. Laying traps. If your thief lays traps in the city streets to snag the cowled wizards, any chance an innocent goes over one and gets killed? I assume that would be a reputation hit. |

I have'nt laid any traps but in all the explosions and destruction a passer by or two might have been hit. [ 01-10-2003, 04:44 PM: Message edited by: OLAF TRYGGRYSON ] |
Da Rules:
To attract the attention of the Cowled Wizards, you must cast a Wizard spell outdoors in Athkatla. (For some reason, the Graveyard District does not count as being part of the city.) Non-spells that will still attract Cowls are: Casting spells from scrolls, casting spells via non-Quickslot items (the Thieves' Hood is an example of a non-Quickslot item), and perhaps certain Special Abilities. There may be more. Your first violation will get you a warning. On your next violation, 4 Cowled Wizards will attack you. After defeating them, you have a grace period of a few hours or so: You can cast all the Wizard spells you want during that period, and the Cowls won't mind. Subsequent violations result in identical attacks by identical Cowls, with the same grace period. After about 4 or 5 of these little tussles, the next group will include a Female Cowled Wizard, who claims to be of high rank among the Cowls. Kill her, and they finally wise up & leave you alone. Killing these Cowled Wizards will not hurt your Reputation. Traps will only harm creatures that are Hostile to you--the only way you can turn an Innocent creature Hostile to you is to commit a crime in its line of sight (such as harming another Innocent, stealing from someone's home, or getting caught Pickpocketing). |
*cough* Mob Battles, if you really want that feeling of, "The Whole Damn World Is Against Me".
Install the "Improved Random Encounters" from the Tactics Mod. Kill all the Cowled Wizard Enforcers except for the last batch. Flip off Bodhi and polish off all the Vampire Encounters except the last one. Enter Windspear Hills, but do not finish the quest. Get Rock-Bottom Reputation, aka 1. Enter the Bridge District at night and make your way to the center, you will encounter a Mugger who demands your money or your life. Show him who's boss and watch in amazement as a crew of people appear( Bounty Hunter, Wizard Slayer, etc... from the Tactics Mod), cast a spell to trigger the High Council of the Cowled Wizards to appear, 3 Vampires will appear to suck the life out of you, 5 Paladins will come to exact vengance for what happened in Windspear Hills, and Amish Guards will arrive to deal with you, a being of evil repute. Have fun massarcing all of them. |

Improved random encounters can be a biatch. Normally CWs don't pose any threat at all unless they get really lucky. Throw in a bunch of random encounter enemies and you've got a small army to front up to. A long, hard slog that requires no small amount of careful planning and luck (though careful planning, done right, nullifies luck). I've never had paladins after me in an encounter like that, but after leaving the underdark, i went back to the promenade and got bailed up by my favourite character, the insane githyanki. Add a handful of CWs and a wandering party of priests and whatnot (who really ought to know better), shake it up a bit and you've got as chaotic a battlefield as you're likely to get in Athkatla. Unless, of course, a group of angry paladins should wander in. After many reloads, i finally got to keep my silver blade (and the anti-paladin weapon which is useless to me anyway.)
And yes, Baros, it is dispiriting to watch your frame rate drop down to snail speed. As bad as it was in this encounter though, i found the improved mind flayer hive to much more detrimental to the cpu performance. [ 01-12-2003, 04:24 AM: Message edited by: Sever ] |
