Andontur
This mighty sword, originally a Holy Avenger, was reforged by the Most Noble Order of the Radiant Heart so that it could be wielded by Trau. The Order knew of the evil dangers about to face Trau and his companions, and felt it their duty to aid them in destroying this evil, giving him a weapon that will surely make the wicked tremble across the Realms. STATISTICS: Combat abilities: 20% chance of target being stunned on each hit. 5% chance that target will be slain instantly. Equipped abilities: Sunray at will THAC0: +6 Bonus Damage: 1D12+6 Damage type: slashing Weight: 5 Speed Factor: 4 Proficiency Type: Two Handed sword Type: 2-handed Requires: 14 Strength Usable By: Trau |
Where does one apply for posession for this sword?
|
Seems a wee bit too powerful for BGII. It might be a little more balanced in ToB though.
|
If you make it so that only level 18 or over paladins can have it is more acceptable. At lower levels far too powerful but when you get to Throne of Bhall it is almost standard
|
errr....where do you get this sword?

Make it +20 to hit/damage, with a 30% chance of instant death with no save.
If you think my version is too powerful, re-read your description |

Anyone have suggestions for how I should tone it down for SoA?
|
well...i'll start by analyizing the weapon to describe how its not balanced well for SoA...because there are probably several ways to tone it down. It's a +6 2handed sword, very nice, and it's also acceptable, there are some +5 swords scattered around, and they have nice bonuses on top of that. But if that isn't enough, there is a 20% chance of stun. that means once every 5 hits a creature is stunned...combine this with haste and the creature which you are attacking will die anyway, so no need for the 5% chance of immediate death. This has a small chance to destroy any creature, especially the ones immune to the stun effects (some beholder kin). For the creatures immune to BOTH, namely undead creatures, there is the "sunray at will" portion.
To balance the blade...you could drop the sunray from at will to around 4 charges/day, and nerf the %stun a little bit. You could also drop the %death entirely...or you can tone down the sunray, drop the %stun entirely, and up the %death to around 10...there are many ways to do this. if this were me making the blade...just out of opinion, i would change the percentages to be dependant on the opponent's alignment (the neutralizer has this sort of affect...extra thac0 and damage based on how far the target's ali is from true neutral...you could change this so that the % stun and % kill depend on the target's alignment with respect to lawful good.) I'd drop down the sunray charges to 3, and make the sword itself a +5, but against undead or demonic targets, an extra +3 thac0 and +3 damage. |
Thanks for the input.
Now, remember, this is not a paladin's sword. My story for it implies that the Order reforged it for it to just be used by myself, and traded the dispel magic abilities for the ones I have listed. My character is neutral good, so, a la the Equalizer, the sword could increase in damage to alignments going past that. I think I will scrap the vorpal hit, and I think the extra damage vs. undead creatures is unnecessary because of the sunray. |
Its a good sword, and with those modifications, it'll seem like the actuall makers put it in the game.

as jabidas said it's way too powerful for a starting party, so it depends on when you get it. Also consider that Carsomyr is like, the most powerful weapon in the game and what you have to do to get it...and this sword is better. also consider that Celestial Fury has that stun effect and is only IIRC +3 ? The stun effect is about the best one in the game in my opinion. and unlimited sunrays are way too much, so is the instant death chance. reading your description (nice, by the way), rhapsody's idea of making it like the equaliser sounds excellent.
with that in mind I would make it range from +2 Vs Lawful-Good (you shouldn't be fighting them anyway) to +6 or 7 Vs Chaotic Evil (maybe use the vorpal bit against the most evil alignments only), keep the 20% stun, and give it an equipped ability of immune to fear or something (maybe level drain or charm, something along these lines) I like your idea of the radiant heart choosing a Champion of Good and sending you out on a crusade thing with a mighty sword-of-evil-bashing as an aside (and speaking of the equaliser) who do you think of when you think of True Neutral ? Druids ! but they can't use it.... ? |
Druids seem to be the logical choice, I suppose...But my character is a neutral good berserker.
Thanks for the input, btw. |
Oh, now I see what you meant. Yeah, silly game makers. I don't really think it's possible to be a true neutral.
|
Hmm..
Why not drop the insta-gib effect, and make it a +4 THACO weapon with 1D8+4 damage and a further +4 damage to evil characters. Then you could add another +8 damage to undead and a sunray 2x/day. And you are left with... Oh. Daystar +4 with a stun effect. Oh well... (BTW, it's way too powerful.) |
