Do any of you have a particular enemy that gets you so freakin' mad that you feel like smashing your monitor to bits to get at them? My all time most despised baddies are mind flayers. I shudder with disgust every time i have to go through that illithid city.

My favourite would have to be ogres. There so shtoopid it's a delight to kill them.

Heartless Butterscotch 12-18-2002 06:25 AM

I can't stand spiders. :shiver: It's not enough that they sink their sharp, hairy fangs into your flesh, they have to inject poison into your veins too.

Having said that, I find Bohdi oddly attractive ...

Sir Exxon 12-18-2002 09:25 AM

Mind Flayers can be a pain in the a**. But so can Beholders. But then, I have figured out good ways to be immune to them both. Just as I have to mainly all other creatures. So I'm not really sure if I have one I hate over all other. :D ;)

My favourite would have to be Irenicus. Mainly because it is fun watching him madly casting spells which all are useless on me, and then go and squeeze him easily. :D

Rataxes 12-18-2002 09:26 AM

Improved Bohdi is a mighty pain the ass.

Horatio 12-18-2002 02:46 PM

Can be classed as a 'baddy' since he's so damn annoying. Noober. Damn his soul!

Mahlennacht 12-19-2002 01:51 AM

It's those VAMPIRES who run around the streets at night; I never know exactly when or where I'll run into them - I'm afraid to walk the streets at night, seriously - they run so fast, our clerics have almost no time to throw up a couple of Negative Plane Protections, and Turn Undead has a delay too. Even then, usually one or two of us has to go to Level Drain Hospital. What a nightmare. Well, Bodhi's hot :D but all the others are wicked.

Mind Flayers are bad, but usually they congregate in a room which you can scout beforehand with Invis or Stealth, and you can get prepared well in advance. Vampires ambush you.

Favorite "red-circle" character - Irenicus (David Warner is outstanding)

Favorite fights - probably liches, with all the casting they do, it's like a firework display, and they have a SICK dance

Angelousss 12-19-2002 02:07 AM

yeah those vamps can be annoying but usually there's just one of them, sometimes more though, i'll take them over beholders anyday though. I still clean out their "city" for the xp though. the one in the shaughin cities ok
I like Drow, three of them in the game you can as shakespheare put it make the beast w/ two backs, they have drizzt and Viconia a pretty good cleric and the best romance imho

robohobodude 12-19-2002 02:13 AM

Well i'll go with mentioning my favorite baddies to fight ;) personally, when ppl go and try to find cheesy ways to kill dragons, or wait till just before going ot brynn law to kill them i think you're missing out on a lot of fun. My first time through SoA (as a stalker ) i ran into the shadow dragon, not even knowing that there WAS a shadow dragon ;) i was just amazed, i was level 9 i might add, i spent an hour figuring out ways to kill the dragon using the abilities, spells, weapon abilities and other strategies. It was the most fun i ever had playing SoA, but that's beside the point :D
the baddy i hated most would have to be the slavers in the temple district where you get the celestial fury, i fought them at a low level and i kept running into traps, and getting slaughtered by that Koshi and his stupid katana (altho i enjoyed using it after i tore it from his dead lifeless body!) ;) DAMN YOUR SOUL U STUPID NINJA!! but yeah lol

NiceWorg 12-19-2002 02:49 AM

I must agree with shadow dragon. It took long with 9th level party to find out how to kill it. Eventually the answer came, just casting spells with mages and running away with the rest, but a nice fight neverthless. What came next was quite a big of a disaster. Shade Lord and his Altar were just a joke, a couple of fireballs and voilá.. they couldn´t even do any damage to my gang. Quite a disappoitment, that.

Mahlennacht 12-19-2002 03:29 AM

I think I'll enjoy dragonslaying once I get used to it, which I'm not, even though I've played the game 5 times - I used the cheesy ways at first just to get through it, even then it was hard for the newbie... looked at Dundee's primer on dragonslaying - giving me lots of fun ideas... quite a number of ways you can go about killing a dragon

But I HAVE GOT to find a way to be more studly with mindflayers - right now they're too easy by blocking the doorway with two invisible party members and throwing rocks at them I'm starting to get lactose-intolerant if you know what I mean - at least I'm fighting those scary vampires like a man.

Angelousss 12-19-2002 03:41 AM

lol actually that's a pretty intresting way of taking them on(the mind flayers i mean)psion blade and those potions is all you reallly need(just watch your int)

My favourite bad guy has to be Irenicus. I just love the way he speaks and his power. I love mages, and he is one outstanding wizard.

Sir Galefin 12-19-2002 05:47 PM

mind flayers easily. they always seem to attack the protagonist and ignore everyone else for me. and its worse when you have improved falyers like i do. damed umber hulks always confusing me while the flayers move in for the kill. ILL KILL THEM ALL! ya thatll show them......

Annatar 01-12-2003 06:52 PM

aren't we forgetting tha bad boy of the docks... Mr Kangaxxx The Evil Demi-Lich himself? just as a normal lich though but damn my first encounter with hime ... my encounter was hmmm you could say I was noob and didn't have i-net to look up some nifty tricks to kill this bad a** irenicus is a filty imp compared with this undead ghoul (my opion though).... irenicus is a fool
Irenicus Vs Kangaxxx :D ? Hmmmmm *kickd out of the litte elvisch world while sucking on a bonzai tree* elf vs bad boy lich king? hmmmsz

like 2 see that battle some time

(there are a lot of cheesy ways 2 killz both of these goons but well ya... i dont like ''cheese''.. nothing better than smashing your golden dagger against irenicus his improved mantle and such (just an example!!!) :D

Butterfingers 01-12-2003 07:48 PM

This is going to sound mighty funny, but, on my first run through the game, nothing really scared me. Up to a point that is.

Dragons were well done and cool to look at, but, I lost all respect when my Blade left his party behind (Moves quick in a spin) and totally smashed Big Red in seconds. Got lucky, scored criticals.

Shadow Dragon died pretty much the same way.

Mindflayers were a bit easy. I used old school PnP tactics, they worked fine.

Drow gave me slight trouble at first. Once I had tactics down, inredibly easy.

Beholders. Tough. But fun. I used the portal in the Asylum to go directly to the Underdark in my very first game, no Cloak of Reflection. Ugh.

No, what gave me FITS were all those damnable golems in the Elven City. There were just to many of them. They just waltzed through and totally smashed my party, many, many, many times. I finally got fed up and superbuffed my Blade and sent him ahead alone to beat the crap out of them. Somebody would get wompled and lose morale, and, go running off to God knows where, and, then come running back to the party wanting to introduce a half a dozen new friends they had brought back with them. That whole area made me CRAZY! Nearly tore my hair out.

I would have to say Golems are the most irritating enemy, at least to me.

Brennihelvete 01-12-2003 08:32 PM

The most annoying opponets isn't neccesarily the toughest...but rather the weakest. Some lv 9 fighter encounters your lvl 20 party and tells you that he will crush you like a bug with his +1 short sword...

Thanks for wasting my time...

Butterfingers 01-12-2003 09:54 PM

I felt that way with my Evil Stormlord Halfling when those stupid Paladins kept coming time after time trying to put an end to my villiany. Made me nuts. If they failed the first time, what makes them think they will win next time? Or the Cowled Ones trying to do the same thing. Like little buzzing flies.

Gangrell 01-12-2003 10:31 PM

Ehh, I'd say the most royal pain in the butt are... flayers. It's a pain because there's little to no way to protect yourself from them unless you strike and strike quickly.

In ToB? I'm gonna say Firegiants. They're so big and ugly, it makes them even harder to kill. Plus they got the big clubs that'll knock you on yer butt in no time flat.

Actually, the same happened to me up until

"i spent an hour figuring out ways ... "

The first spell I ever cast on a dragon was "Disintegrate". MR didn't help, the dragon failed it's save, and i was convinced dragons were easy. I wiped dragon-dust off my sleeves and waltzed around for a while, encountering Firky when i was a few levels higher. I cast "Disintegrate", he cast "Dragon Breath".

He did not die.

I did.

Talk about first impressions ;)

Early in the game I live in continual fear of running into one of the random groups from the Weimer's Tactics module. They have high hit points, impressive weapons, seemingly limitless haste spells. They attack weaker party members first and don’t know when to quit. All in all it’s like fighting my own party.
True they have great stuff but I spend most of my earnings from them at a local temple buying band-aids +3.
After I level up enough they aren’t so bad. But then I have to deal with the mind flayers. I hate them largely because I usually my PC isn’t the brainiest person around.

Baros 01-13-2003 04:00 AM

I've just installed the new expanded thieve's guild module and that includes some enhanced random encounters. First time I met some I'd just finished the slaver quest and had walked out of the front door to head back to the Copper coronet. It autopaused when the enemy was spotted so I looked around and spotted just a couple of thugs, no problem, even for a solo level 11 Assassin. Unfortunately I missed the mage and cleric (normally the first two targets in any combat) who proceeded to wipe the floor with me, until I ran into Gaelen Bayle's home to hide! It's amazing how many high level magic users have nothing better to do than mug you

First time I ran into them I wasnt aware that their mighty hammers would strike me down in two hits...
They are pretty easy to take out if you got an archer in your party thou. You can just run around them shooting arrows at them till they fall, and they are too slow to ever catch up on you ;)

Most annoying Monster in ToB...hmm lemme see, I havent got trough ToB yet but the most annoying monster I have encountered so far would be the Imps in the watchers keep whom are casting wild magic. I had 50k gold and they got the destroy gold on target roll and bam 47k of gold were gone... ARGH! And it didn't help much when all my party members got hiccup...hiccup is the most darn annoying thing in real life as well!!!

SixOfSpades 01-13-2003 04:58 PM

Most Hated Enemy has got to be Beholders. You mean they have infinite Death Spells, and their Anti-Magic Rays instantly dispel *ALL* of my protection spells? Oh, well thank you very much.

I don't like Mind Flayers either, although for roleplaying reasons. How is it that they can do their Psionic Blasts on creatures halfway across the map? And, since they're supposed to be able to detect the thoughts of any intelligent creatures, how can they POSSIBLY be Backstabbed? And yet I find that Backstabbing is devastatingly effective against them. Poorly done.

drewal 01-13-2003 05:06 PM

If Cespenar is a bad guy (he is the butler in hell after all), then he gets my vote for most loathed.

I cannot stand having him go through the pack mumbling and squealing everytime I get back to the pocket plane.

Even more frustrating...

You can't kill him.

Zarr 01-13-2003 06:06 PM

I agree with Six Of Spades on this beholders are IMO the most annoying(that's if your not using the cloak of cheese or shield of balduran of course).

Probably annoying but not to hard. A swift, destructive attack will always do the job The shorter they live the less chaos thay can unleash...

Sir Goulum 01-13-2003 06:31 PM

Liches, Midflayers, or Goblins

OLAF TRYGGRYSON 01-14-2003 10:41 AM

Mind Flayers are #1 on my list Then beholders then Drow.... I had so much trouble with the Drow when I played through a couple of years ago I almost threw my monitor out the window.....

LOL! :D
Yes, without uber items - the Cloak, the Shield, the Scroll or the Staff, Beholders are a pain.

However, you shouldn't be bothered with Anti-Magic Rays. ;)
For more info, check out Spell Shield's description in the Spell Reference. I'm rather proud of that one.

As you should be. However, since blocking Anti-Magic Rays is virtually the only plausible use for Spell Shield, I've more than half a mind to widely publish that as its intended function.

The last time I fought Beholders, none of my Wizards knew Spell Shield, but I didn't mind, because I wanted to try a new tactic: Death Warded Skeleton Warriors! It makes the recipient immune to Death Spell!

It doesn't. I guess the Death Spell's "slays all summoned creatures, regardless of Hit Dice or immunities" takes precedence.

LilMafiaGangsta 01-15-2003 03:20 AM

Your assumption is correct. This was tested back and forth - there is no way to protect your [non gated] summons from Death Spell.

This actually has an abusable side, too. ;) Some spawned creatures in the games are considered "summoned" by the game engine - thus making them susceptible to Death Spell.

Not even Spell Immunity: Necromancy? (I know that none of the summons can cast SI, but it's a thought.)

pritchke 01-15-2003 04:24 PM

Yes illithid's and mind flayers they are magic resistance and very annoying at controling, killing my characters. I have no problem with beholders, they are nothing a few cloud type spells can't handle. But I cringe at the mention of illithid's and mind flayers. Let's just say I am a little bit magic dependent.

Yeah, i thought about it, too - but whether the answer will be yes or no doesn't matter, as you already pointed out - so i gave up the idea.
