Well? I can't seem to find much, and I think it's cause his ranger class doesn't allow chainmails and the like. If he was full Elf, would that change anything? Cause he can't even wear Elven Mails (the armor of his own people)!

To get it just go and do your stronghold quests.

It is neither the race nor the class, but the kit that disallows armor above the leathers.

I assume that you have chosen the Stalker kit. This kit that blends a ranger with a thief, even down to having some backstab capability can only wear leathers because of his "Thiefishness".

The Cavalier 11-29-2002 06:00 PM

Nah, my ranger is an Archer. I do have the black dragon armor, so that will work.

Indemaijinj 11-29-2002 06:19 PM

Archers aren't supposed to be in close combat anyway and the Shadow Dragon Scale is a damn fine piece of armor.

Chocolate Man 11-29-2002 09:22 PM

Yeah, archers are like stalkers, except they can wear hide armor in addition to leather and studded leather like the stalker. They can't wear elven chain because it is METAL and the archer kit specifically disallows this.

My favorite SoA armor for Archers is Aeger's Hide +3.
Admittedly, its AC is not as good as the Shadow Dragon Scale - but the various elemental protection and the immunity to confusion makes it superior, IMO.
Your Archer should be hasted anyway - so AC is not that improtant to him.

Yes, this and the Armour of Deep Night +4. I tend to go for the latter though, since hide armour has a "missile attraction" problem, and gives a -2 AC penalty against piercing weapons. The AoDN+4 is classed as studded leather, and even though the base AC is the same, its AC modifiers are superior having +3 better AC against missile and piercing weapons, and +2 better AC against slashing weapons. But then I suppose you could argue that AH has the elemental resistances and mind shield ability, so I guess it just comes down the personal preference

Black Dragon armor all the way!!!

I still think it's bizarre that Thieves can wear Elven Chains, while Stalkers, Archers, and Druids cannot. Wierd.....

Thieves get fairly major penalties to their thieving skills with Elven Chain, so although they can wear it, it isn`t without consequence.

In normal AD&D they do, and although it was mentioned in the manual (*cough*), I'm not sure that they were ever implemented in the game. Anyone know for sure?

Zarr 12-02-2002 11:39 AM

Jim I'm pretty sure the penalites were implemented in the game. I had Jan wear elven chainmail and his thieving skills became worse on his character information screen so it looks like it does. I'm about 75% sure.

Right, I've just dug a little deeper, and it seems that the penalties for wearing leather/studded leather/hide armour were never implemented into the game, but those for wearing elven chain were. Wierd! Especially since the quoted penalties in the back of the manual for leather/studded/hide are significantly higher than those from wearing elven chain.

Zarr 12-02-2002 05:43 PM

Interesting thanks for the information Jim. That is strange I wonder why they implemented them for elven chain and not the others? The penalites Jan had annoyed me so much I took off his elven chainmail and give him back his adventure wear besides there's always stoneskin right?
