Ironworks Forum
Hi,
I don't know if someone remember me from my postings in the Wizardry8 Topic years ago. Once in a while I was looking here to find out about some new games or topics. But it seems to me that the forum is sleeping with the exception of the "Generell Topic"-Thread. I remember some of you, when I read the threads now (f.e. Kakero) and Ziroc, it seems, is still the board master. But why are there no topics for some of the newer RPG's ? Is no one of the active posters playing rpg's anymore? It would be nice if someone could tell me. Maybe, because of my long absence, I've missed some important decisions. Greetings Loudhy |
Re: Ironworks Forum
Hi, i remember your name. People are still reading and posting here, it's just not as lively anymore as it used to be, no idea why though.

Re: Ironworks Forum
Got a broken bone in my wrist, called a scaphoid. can't really do much--hell, for the last 3 weeks, its been hurting more that normal. poor sleep.. even with the brace/temp cast.
Check this out on the bone I broke--one of the smallest, and gets the least blood supply--thus, hard to heal: (I was in a full arm cast for 14 WEEKS!!! and it didn't heal).. never broke a bone before--and I've done some crazy shit in my time... rope swinging out at 50ft into a lake..... etc.. yet a simple little bone causes a pain which currently feels like a red hot ice pick stabbed into my right wrist. ugh.... http://www.assh.org/PUBLIC/HANDCONDI...Fractures.aspx Gotta get surgery. but first, I must quit smoking. I want to, its bad for you, and smells. so I'm on the gum and been tying that pill. Quitting is hard as hell. I tried cold turkey, but on day 8, with 3 days of no sleeping.. its true when they say its as hard to quit as heroin... (never tried THAT.. lol never will). Anyway, its halted ALL productivity for over a year. That's why I don't have the Diablo forum up. As soon as this pain 'relaxes' I will add it. I mean, I'm a graphics artist, draw comics and work in 3DS max-- I haven't drawn ANYTHING in over a year... That is taking a serious toll on my mental health in a way.. its what I LOVE to do, ya know? So I can't WAIT to get my bone healed back, and I know I'll be putting 1+ years of work into the first 6 Months when I'm 'back' to normal.. I'll be like a new man! hehe.. While I can't play many PC games too long, I CAN plan PS3.. (no need to rotate my wrist I guess.. so i've been into Battlefield 3 huge.. and Need For Speed the Run). Tried beating Legend of Grimrock, but got to level 8, and it just hurt my wrist too much playing for more than an hour. Diablo I did ok.. got to hell level, but stopped that too due to wrist hurting.. Its so weird.. won't hurt for a while, and the smallest twist or lifting something makes it hurt, and when that happens, it'll hurt 8-14 days before calming down enough to do very light work. I mean, making the bed is a pain.. thats SO lame. :( Frustrating is more like it... :) Been watching the Big Brother live feeds again.. my summer thing.. |
Re: Ironworks Forum
Sounds bad. A broken bone in the wrist is the baddest thing that could happen to a gamer, I think. I hope you get well soon.
My last game was Oblivion, I'm currently looking for a new one. It's hard to find games without hectic rush and haste and I'm not getting younger (unfortunately). |
Re: Ironworks Forum
Not to mention with your right hand out of commission you have to try to use your left for wanking...and that's always a disappointment :wootrock: Just kidding you...hope you get better soon Z.

Re: Ironworks Forum
@Magik -- HAHAHA! yeah, right? :)
Loudhy, if you liked the Eye of the Beholder series (or Dungeon Master in 1990) you would LOVE Grimrock, and its by a smaller dev, and cheaper.. The game is full of puzzles and stuff. I can't wait to get back into it. They are also releasing an editor for free, so free mods!! Check it here: http://www.grimrock.net/ It's only $14.99 too! lol, and IMO was worth it!! If you liked Diablo 1 from the late 90's, you'd love Diablo 3.. its much the same, but with the addition of a world of warcraft like Auction house where you can sell loot for gold to buy better stuff. (And there's no PKing in Diablo 3 this time which is nice..) PKing for those that never played the first Diablo and second one too I believe was 'player killing' and it became so bad with the cheaters that it kinda killed the online game. I'm STILL waiting for Thief 4... Rumors say its in trouble because some dev's left, but at the end of a dev cycle, its normal for lead programmers to bounce... their jobs done, and they move on.. (At least this is what us Thief fans are praying is the case). They spelled the logo for thief 4 "Thi4f" someone mixed the letters into "f4ith" lololol... |
Re: Ironworks Forum
Grimrock sounds familiar and looks interesting but unfortunatly it needs steam. So it's no choice. It seems to me that the good old times with CD and Booklet are gone forever. It's a pity.

You can get the non-steam version. I did. I freaking HATE steam--ing pile of crap. I'm a tech nut, and my task manager is tweaked clean. I don't need a useless POS eating up my ram and cpu, ya know? I am anti-steam for sure.. don't like that.. I want a game. don't wanna have to install 39942923 tracker programs to play.. but yeah, if you dl it from their own site, they have a non-steam version.. |
Re: Ironworks Forum
I miss the days of Infocom.. when you'd get a map, a toy (wishbringer had a plastic stone in it that would glow when held to the light for a few seconds).. neat stuff like that made it fun.. hell, it had to! It was a text adventure. But in those days of Zork, you used your imagination, and THAT was fun.
I hated the mines in Zork though.. got so lost many times hehe... :) Damn Grues... :) |
Re: Ironworks Forum
The first mention of grues in the Zork games is the following ominous line:
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue. Further investigation will reveal more about their nature: > what is a grue? The grue is a sinister, lurking presence in the dark places of the earth. Its favorite diet is adventurers, but its insatiable appetite is tempered by its fear of light. No grue has ever been seen by the light of day, and few have survived its fearsome jaws to tell the tale. |
Re: Ironworks Forum
wow Z, now there's a flash back! I havent thought about Zork in forever! :D
As to rpg's, I just havent had the time to play any of them, too much happening! Happy Gaming! |

If they offer a non-stem version I'll buy it. |
Re: Ironworks Forum
Yeah, here is the direct link to the choices..
http://www.grimrock.net/buy/ I bought direct from them. (The 'almost human' icon or choose the GOG icon link).. it has a standalone install, but they DO also give you a steam 'key' if you decide to install steam.. :) which you don't have to. It's so awesome.. and if you get stuck, they have awesome help on their forums. |
Re: Ironworks Forum
Great. I can buy it via PayPal. It seems I can play this game this weekend already.
|
Re: Ironworks Forum
Nice! I think you'll enjoy it! Has the old school RPG feel, but with great graphics!
BTW, you can import your own portraits for your characters. Do a search for Grimrock here in the General Con Forum on how to do it. (If you decided to want diff portraits). I chose Drizzt and gang for my 4 :) |
Re: Ironworks Forum
Got it !!!
Thanks Ziroc. Without your hint I would have missed this game. It looks great from my first test. |
Re: Ironworks Forum
Hell.
This game is really "Old School"! It's a lot of work but possible to solve up to now (if I find a way to find enough food). The game for me always end on Level 4 because of starving. And especially there you need a lot of time for all those hordes of skeletons. I have to wait longer before I eat the "delicious rations" :D. I think now the bar must run yellow before consuming the food. Great graphics. Can I pause the game during combat? I found nothing. If the enemies are coming from different directions it's very hard to navigate because you cannot stop the game and look and think about the situation. I had a lot of luck down there after I felt through some pits. And I hate winning a game with luck. |
Re: Ironworks Forum
Yeah, there's a level where food (snails re-spawn) and kill em for food.. Here's the link to the misc. forum where I posted it:
http://www.ironworksforum.com/forum/...d.php?t=102234 Make sure you look for secret buttons on walls and stuff--like Eye of the Beholder! :D If you need help on some of the harder puzzles, just type in "Grimrock" in YouTube, and choose an HD set of clips.. there is this one guy that has a complete walk-through showing you where everything is! :). I only used it when I was SUPER stumped. It's a really fun game though.. love the old school feel. Remember "Theme Park" by maker Bullfrog? It was kinda like Roller coaster Tycoon (also loved that game too).. I may have to install those on my old windows 95 machine I put together just for my old games heheh.. And Out of this World... Bards Tale... Ultima Underworld... ah.. the memories!! |
Re: Ironworks Forum
I remembered another game yesterday : Grimoire
IIRC this game was not finished when I joined here and I found it today in another forum somewhere with a post from Nov 2011 that is is now has BETA-status. I'll try to find out more but has anyone here actual informations about that game ? @Ziroc Besides Grimrock I'm playing Jagged Alliance 2 currently. I found it after more than 10 years in a chest in the cellar :D. These old games you mentioned work well with an emulator even with Windows7. I'll play Ultima IV again later but for now I have enough to play and, of course, there is a RL too. |
Re: Ironworks Forum
I removed Grimrock from disk.
I couldn't finish it. As you may know from my time playing W8, I don't reload after a party is destroyed. This way to play is impossible in Grimrock. It has fantastic graphics and it gives back a long forgotten feeling of the old dungeon games. But it's pure stress. There is no Pause-Key, you need three eyes, four hands and two brains to play it. I could handle it to level 5. Descending deeper it becomes more and more arcade. Small rooms, fast enemies and continuous clicking on runes. I tried it several times but I have to give up. What a pity. |
Re: Ironworks Forum
Time goes by too fast. Or maybe I just don't have as much spare time than when I was younger. These days I'm happy when I get one evening to just sit down and relax.
I have just reinstalled Icewind Dale 1. Haven't played it in many years. But of course I have Guild Wars 2 I'm "playing" too. (I wish I had the time!) |

I returned to Jagged Alliance 2 for now. The community developed a very good mod for the game. It's very difficult, but it's turn-based. So I can sit there and drink a cup ot tea (or more .... ) You're right : Time goes by too fast. Unbelievable. I remember I bought a C64 and Ultima II in the year 1983. Maybe I should celebrate my 30th anniversary of gaming next year :D. |
Re: Ironworks Forum
I started on a Commodore64 with Bard's Tale. I had plenty of games before that, of course, but they were pretty forgettable...except for The Standing Stones and text-only games like Zork I - III, Enchanter, and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
|
Re: Ironworks Forum
Yes, or Leather Goddesses of Phobos. That game was pure hell. I never finished it. My english wasn't good enough, even with dictionary. Especially humor is sometimes hard to understand :D.
Oh man, I should return to the present now and stop living in the past. |

Re: Ironworks Forum
I know the feeling. I flit in and out of this place so sporadically. I'm not sure who actually remembers my days of heavy posting. I think it's a bit of a catch 22. I remember a time when I could post, check back in about 30 seconds and know that someone would have replied. Conversation just flowed pretty well. Then, as it got quieter, people replied less and less, so I checked back less and less. Kinda perpetuated itself really. Which is a massive shame as I used to love this place. I haven't ventured out of General Discussion in a long time though. I never really used the gaming forums except for the BG one. Which is what drew me to IW in the first place.

Re: Ironworks Forum
Weirdly enough I play games less and less now. The last thing I played was a stint on Lost Odyssey about a month ago. They just rarely grip me as much any more. The last thing I was REAAALLY in to was Mass Effect 3. Which I was REALLY in to.
I'm pretty sure it's because most of my free time lately has been taken in with my desire to watch all 18 seasons of Stargate back to back. I bloody love Stargate. |
Re: Ironworks Forum
Awesome on the Stargate B! I'm in the same boat gaming wise, just no real time. My children are at the fun age of let's go do stuff and who am I to deny them quality time?? :D
|
Re: Ironworks Forum
I just got to series 8 in my marathon and have found corrupted (or more likely incomplete) files! DISASTER. Now to acquire moar sg-1.
Games I will return to the console for: Dishonoured (providing it doesn't make me sick-as-a-dog like mirrors edge did) and Watch Dogs (Which looks OMAZING). |
Re: Ironworks Forum
I hate it. But unfortunately I must say : If I don't want to play older games forever, I need steam.
Someone told me I can play games offline, even if I need to activate the game via internet. Is that true? I don't want patches without my permission. I had some problem in the past with windows updates that destroyed some of my game settings (Oblivion f.e.). I think very special problems can occure if I have mods installed. |
