What were you're favorite morning cartoons as a kid?

...And, what do you think of the stuff on the air now??

Anyone remember "Thundarr the barbarian" on TV? ;) Its FINALLY out on DVD now...
Thundarr's sayings are funny as hell "LORDS OF LIGHT!" and "DEMON DOGS!" -- He acts like a womanizer though.. calls females "WOMEN!, you will follow US!" hahah just so silly.. Here is the intro:
(That planet is 'planet X' conspiracy people will say!) hehehe.. Thundarr cam before He Man, but the likeness is uncanny, eh?

But the cartoon was back in 1980....

I watched that, the "REAL" Ghostbusters cartoon and the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon too... You don't see that kind of cell painting cartooning that much these days.. Those guys were pioneers..

Then in 1982-1988 GI Joe and Transformers! (Those rocked)

BTW, The Voice of Cobra Commander died at the age of 47 (I think---in his 40s though.. that's way too young).. Damn Zartan killed him I think... :)
He was a GREAT voice actor..same for Destro's voice guy..

Before all that, the US version of Gatchaman was on here, called "Battle of the Planets", and I dug that show BIG TIME... (the American version is freaking edited up, and they inserted crappy seven-zark-seven into the show to fill time.. you can clearly see the poor artistry there in those inserts...

http://www.unbstudios.com/wordpress/.../gatchaman.jpg

Jason was my fave.. :) Race car... bad ass... Tiny just needed to have a food bowl next to him at all times.. Keyop.. hmm.. dunno if he was mildly mental, or just had a speech impediment. hehehe...
What I see today is... blah.... I do see there's a new GI Joe and Transformers coming out (again)... (I did like Beastwars and Beastmachines a few years ago) poor waspinator....

Re: What were you're favorite moring cartoons as a kid?

Man I used to watch a crapload of cartoons back in the day. I vaguely remember something called Thundarr. To name a few that I do recall.

Dungeons and Dragons
Spiderman and his amazing friends (Iceman and Firestar iirc)
He-Man
Mysterious Cities of Gold
Jayce and the Wheel Warriors
Transformers
Ulysseus
Nightmare
Jamie and the Magic Torch (Don't ask)
The little Prince - although I remember the theme songs better than I do the cartoons.

That's all I can recall for now.

Re: What were you're favorite moring cartoons as a kid?

On yeah! I remember Super Friends and Amazing Spiderman -- Iceman was my fave...
I HATED when they added the 'wonder twins' 'Wonder twins activate... in the form of... a big dong!" :D silly stuff

Shmoo was funny to watch
Hong kong phooy
That cartoon with the 60's sand buggy that talked... lol what was That called???
Captian cavvvvvveeeee mmmaaaaaan!

Re: What were you're favorite moring cartoons as a kid?

OMG I remember Captain Caveman. Many cartoons frustrated me, yet I watched them alot. For some reason I cannot recall, Caveman was one of them. Another was that Roger Ranget. I loved to hate it. I think the sand buggy one was Speed Buggy.

Remember Underdog? :) "There is no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here" :D

God yes, remember Mighty Mouse? lol

Re: What were you're favorite moring cartoons as a kid?

Also, do you remember The Racoons? I loved that one. I wanted to live where the Racoons lived. And Bravestar, ("strength of the bear speed of the puma!"). Also with reluctance, I recall MASK. I hated it, yet forced myself to watch it cuz nothing else was on. Another one was "Defenders of the EARTH!". My god, I don't even recall what it was about but I never forget the theme song. I think it was kinda like Thundercats meets Justice League. Oh and what about the annoying "Denver the last Dinosaur" Remember, he's our friend and a whole lot more. I also recall watching Flintstones alot too. It's crazy how it all comes back to you. I coulda been learning decrypting or something more constriuctive.

I found the Racoons theme song, loved it. May bring it back if you have forgotten it. Not sure what the epic lyrics have to do with Racoons in retrospect.

Gawd, cartoons bring back memories good... and bad...

I remember most of those mentioned here - never saw the Raccoons though.

Some others that linger in the mists :

Huckleberry Hound

Rocky & Bullwinkle (Fractured Fairy Tales FTW !)

Linus the Lionhearted

King Leonardo

Milton the monster

Mighty Hercules (ROOLS !!! :heee:)

Batfink

Courageous Cat

Super Chicken

Top Cat

Calvin & the Colonel

Johnny Quest

George of the jungle

Had the boardgames for R&B and Johnny Quest. Think some of those shows would be real groaners today - but the memories live on :D

Re: What were you're favorite moring cartoons as a kid?

And speaking of cartoons, about 6 months ago I tried to track down the names of two series about super heroes from some *very* fragmented memories.

Took a while but success !!! Super 6 and The Impossibles.

Ahhh, bliss... :heee:

Oh god, Batfink. Another one I loved to hate. Top Cat I was thinking of earlier too. I liked that one - he was cool. Couldn't stomach George of the Jungle.

Aye, Danger Mouse. I couldn't stand Inspector Gadget - it shoulda been called "Penny and Brain". Also, Gadget was some kinda cyborg IRL.

My favorite was always the Pink Panther. :)

Hey I loved danger mouse too :)

But my cartoon days go back to when they were called animations

Re: What were you're favorite moring cartoons as a kid?

Top cat
pink panther
trapdoor (did you guys get that in the USA)?

But the old Tom and Jerry cartoons from the 1940's can't be beat with the richness of the colours and the detail - shame some of them are considerd racist these days. Those cartoons from the 1940's (not the later stuff from the 70's onward) won seven oscars - 7 oscars! beat that toy story :heee:

and a special mention for 'itchy and scratchy' as the best of the modern ones :)

wellard 02-04-2011 05:37 AM

Re: What were you're favorite moring cartoons as a kid?

Actually trapdoor should be classed as claymation (like wallace and grommit)

Here is the intro

Re: What were you're favorite morning cartoons as a kid?

I enjoyed a few cartoons, Transformers was good, also The Gobots, Defenders of the Earth, and Battle of the Planets was superb!!
The first saturday morning cartoon I remember was something called Birdman, don't really remember much about it, apart from he seemed to fire lazers out of his fists!
Those were the days.

Firestormalpha 02-08-2011 12:24 AM

Re: What were you're favorite morning cartoons as a kid?

Was Gobots the one with the red scooter that transformed and the leader was a space shuttle? I really enjoyed Captain Planet. And I've found my new favorite morning channel. 'THIS' network - some nice older stuff, heathcliff first thing in the morning followed by Inspector Gadget and the Pink Panther. Interestingly enough, they're showing Solarbabies this Sunday. Terrible name, interesting concept.

P.S. thought I'd add, that I'm not alluding to some unspecified channel, rather it is in fact called "THIS" tv.

Re: What were you're favorite morning cartoons as a kid?

So many great cartoons in this thread...*nostalgic ooze*

Some of my favourites:

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
Transformers
Astroboy (the new stuff, including the film is bollocks)
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Vicky the Viking
Belle and Sebastian
Future Boy Conan (This is magical)
Scooby Doo (only the seasons where mysteries were solved...the earlier the better)
Teknoman (much later on...)

I often wonder if I'm an alienated minority who doesn't like much of the self-conscious sarcasm and general vulgarity of today's cartoons...they just don't do it for me anymore. There's often nothing wholesome about them at all.

On KET/PBS did anyone ever watch Electric Company or 3.2.1 Contact? (A science show) Is SOOOO cheesy to see on YouTube now though.

On Electric Company, I always looked forward to the Spider man bit.... heheheh

SpiritWarrior 02-24-2011 11:54 AM

Re: What were you're favorite morning cartoons as a kid?

If it had little, very basic and obvious experiments for the viewers to "do at home" then I vaguely remember hating it. Most likely it had my attention for a few mins until Spiderman was on.

Totally going to burn up Youtube watching 80's toons now. :D

Re: What were you're favorite morning cartoons as a kid?

BTW! Thundarr the Barbarian is on official DVD now! Every single Episode (22 I think in total) on Amazon!!

Also, Time Life Video has all 200+ "Real Ghostbuster episodes" but they want an insane amount of money for them.. like $129 or something.. To rich for my blood! :)

It's nice that they are releasing these.

I *DO* own the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon series. It even came in a neat DVD boxset... Sucks that the series was short, and never got closure. Back then, Religious groups were sending letters into ABC saying how D&D was 'satanic' and stuff..
Ah well... The Cellwork was really nice in it.

Re: What were you're favorite morning cartoons as a kid?

Does anyone remember a British TV show back in the day called "Knightmare?" It was practically a D&D session made into a show, where players competed in a virtual dungeon with a helmet that acted as a blindfold. The player was put in a green-screen studio and guided around by his friends, as computer graphics and props brought the dungeon to life on their (and our) screens. It was really an innovative show for its time, with amazing actors who we're all basically RPing the entire time. And this was before RPing was even around in the sense that we know it and was also amidst the D&D controversy of the 80's. Anyways, even the Dungeon Master was awesome and always in-character. Usually, they were a bunch of British nerds with glasses that competed but there was nothing like it at the time, and the computer graphics were considered state of the art, lol. For any who are unsure, the opening theme tune may refresh your memory.

Can't remember actually watching cartoons in the morning. On schooldays i was always reading comics during breakfast, and in the weekends i went outside to play football with my friends as soon as i got some clothes on.

Re: What were you're favorite morning cartoons as a kid?

Any of you watch the anime cartoons that dominated the screens, such as Pokemon, Zoids, Yu-Gi-Oh, Digimon, Dragonball Z etc? Steadily got worse over the years :D

Firestormalpha 03-19-2011 05:36 PM

Re: What were you're favorite morning cartoons as a kid?

Zoids wasn't too bad. Yu-Gi-Oh, was so-so. Digimon should never have been made. DBZ was awesome.... when I was in middle school. Pokemon was great when I was younger. I kinda grew out of it. Still enjoy the games, though. Possibly one of the worst anime-ish programs I have ever seen is Spider Riders. Maybe we should start a seperate thread about the worst and best anime programs of all time?

Wolf Rider2 03-19-2011 07:33 PM

Re: What were you're favorite morning cartoons as a kid?

They're still making new series of Pokemon.

And when you look back on these cartoons, there are so many inuendos... I always thought those shows had been so innocent... But no, they've all turned into anime pron.

A new thread for anime? Sounds like a plan :D

Firestormalpha 03-19-2011 07:38 PM

Re: What were you're favorite morning cartoons as a kid?

If you think anime is loaded with inuendo, rewatch old disney movies, and I think Looney Toons are also supposed to have a lot of things you wouldn't catch as a kid.

Wolf Rider2 03-19-2011 07:53 PM

Re: What were you're favorite morning cartoons as a kid?

Yes, Disney is quite bad in that respect. But I didn't know about Looney Toons...

How did I miss this post? Knightmare was AWESOME. Genuinely years ahead of its time. And also, took no prisoners with the grotty little kids who were on it. I think in it's 5-6 year run about 4 or 5 teams actually won anything. Looking back, the graphics were awful and the script was worse. But for its day, Knightmare was insanely brilliant. I probably have a lot of my love for high-fantasy to thank for it.
