Cloudy's Cafe

Come in, be welcome, be comfortable, be yourself

Welcome to Cloudy's Cafe, a place to have a cup of coffee or a good
darjeeling and the finest in conversation and camaraderie.

The proprietor asks that you follow a few simple guidelines:

this is a real conversation zone, not a role-play zone

* no flaming; if you disagree with a viewpoint expressed by any patron, please do so in a civil manner

* any topic is fair game, but keep posts to the standards that Ziroc has set for the entire forum, please (ie: foul language is not appropriate and things should be suitable for all audiences)
-a side note from Cloudy: I see this as a place for those short
conversations about a new baby or the latest soccer fiasco, not for things that are big enough to warrant their own threads, by all means give those things the space they need and post separately!

* Please, no one word or smiley posts (Ziroc has declared them 'real spam' and the proprietor doesn't want the reputuation of "good spam" to suffer!)

* do feel free to be serious or silly and enjoy the company of others while you are here. By all means POST if you have something to say, even to start another topic , we can handle multiple chats, we're a CAFE!!! But be courteous and don't disrupt a conversation just to disrupt it.

Come on in! The bar is stocked with coffees, teas, juices and waters from around the world. And purple napkins, of course!

The lighting is low, the golden oak counters and tables glow with inviting warmth. Near the window, the lighting is brighter, as comfy, plush leather armchairs wait for those who'd like to read a book while relaxing to music or just lazily watch the world go by.

Re: Cloudy's Cafe-a conversation zone- January 2, 2011

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY New Year to everyone. With wishes for good health and better things to come as we move into 2011!

We had some family drop in for New Year's eve. Well we had a few hours notice. They had to take someone to the airport near us to catch a ridiculously early flight out on New Year's day so they stayed with us. Wow, I forgot how hard it is to get to bed late and then get up at 3:30am.... LOL Luckily I didn't need to as my friend knew how to get to the airport.

Hope all is going well for everyone. We've got hot dogs and french fries cooking so lunch is almost ready.

Cookies on the counter- help yourselves! And someone find out what happened to the M&M dispenser... :D

Happy New Year everybody!!!

Hope everybody has a fantastic year.

What the...? How can you break an endless M&M dispenser? Do you know how serious this is for my addic- errr... do you know how important M&Ms are to one's well-being? :)

*leaves for a few*

*returns with tools*

Hmmmm.... lessee... gonna take a while. In the meantime, happy new year, all! And I agree, Cloudy... 3AM wake-ups are best when someone else has to do it :D

*grabs a couple of cookies*

Christmas festivities finished up here yesterday, with my dad's side of the family. We may have screwed up, though... I though the dollar limit for kid gifts was $15, but both my kids got something in the $25 range. May need to do damage control...

In the meantime, it's off to see the lizard... and maybe getting back to working on my endless project, remodeling the basement :)

ROTFL, Gangrell, good to see you, and glad to hear your memory is intact.. :)

Bungleau, 3am....I am way past getting up at that hour for travelling! But I'm glad my company managed. I offered to give them an alarmclock but they used their phones- gotta love all the new technology! Have fun on the basement rehab. Send some encourangement to my hubby- I'd like a basement makeover too! :D

Aha, the M&M's are back...well, the dispenser is, anyway....hmmmmm

I use my cell phone all the time now too... in addition to whatever "standard" alarm clock is set. I can trust my cell... 'cause it's not an iPhone :)

As for the basement makeover, you really sure you wanting me giving Nacht tips? I started this project in March...nine months later, I have walls. It ain't exactly fast going... I keep getting dis--

Oh, there's the ex-Endless M&M Dispenser. Lemme check that out some more...

Evening all. It's gone midnight here.

I'm downstairs at a friend's house as everyone else has gone to bed and I don't want to wake them, as I am going to be up for at least the next seven hours trying to get some work finished for a deadline tomorrow.

Plus I have had a really persistent cold for the last month, which has given me a sore throat and immense pain in my inner ear.

That sucks, DS. Not a great start to the year, by the sounds of it.

*pulls sonic screwdriver out of pocket, gives to Bungleau so he can fix M&M dispenser*

Thanks, WR2. Been out picking up a fresh pack of Jelly Babies... not sure if they'll help the Endless M&M dispenser, but they can never hurt :)

Snow, snow, snow... we've barely gotten an inch over the last several days while places like Alabama hog it all. Quit being greedy! We've got a ski industry up here, you know...

DS, hope you've gotten some sleep since that post... and I'm not talking about the shut-eye in class ;) I've had a persistent nagging cough for the last few weeks as well, although not with the additional blessings you've received ;)

*sits down with the Endless M&M Dispenser, using the sonic screwdriver to loosen the bottom plate and investigate, looking for "something funny"*

Jelly baby?

Ahem, Whew. Dang, it's dusty in here.
I guess we're not much for idle chatter these days.
Well, Just thought I'd mention that I'm no longer living in my sister's house. We found a decent place to rent. Sadly, there is but one bathroom between 3 adults. Still, it's a house.

In even brighter news, my nephew was born on Monday, just narrowly managing to avoid a 3rd birthday in April. Coming into the world at 7lbs 6oz., 21 inches and looking very much like my brother at that age. (a good sign I'm sure)

Congratulations on the new nephew, FSA.

*checks out M&M dispenser* Yay, it's fixed :D

How is everybody?

Just a quick tech question. It's pretty simple, so I didn't see the point in making a whole new thread for it.

We finally got ourselves a blu-ray player. Vizio VBR120. factory firmware's a bit buggy, found a downloadable update. It downloads as a .iso file. Would I be correct in saying that the idea is to burn it to a cd/dvd and run it in the player in order to update the firmware? And does it matter which format I burn it onto? The file is a little under 45MB. so I'm thinking CD would be best, unless there would be an issue with the format. Didn't see any instructions on the vizio site.

The usual method is to copy a file to a USB drive, plug it into the back of the player, and run the update procedure.

However, the file needed is a .DSO, not an .ISO, as shown here and here.

hmmm... yet the file provided from the company website was an .iso. most perplexing.

According to page 38 of the user manual that particular player *will* update with an .iso file.

Ok, but does it need to be administered via usb drive, or will a burned disc do the job? If the former, we'll need to go shopping. If the latter, we're all set to go cuz I already made the disc. I'm just not sure if it would work that way.

USB or internet are the only options listed.

Oh, update on my end, the disc I burned with the .iso updated my blu-ray player perfectly. Though I suspect a .dso might require the use of a thumb drive.

You remember back in the days when we had to walk uphill in the snow to get to an internet access just to check the forum? Them young ones have it easy with the free WiFi and 3G. :p

Finally putting in some earnest effort towards getting employment. My last employer gave me a bit of a run-around to get my employment info. Called the store, they told me to call corporate. I called corporate, they told me to call HR. I called HR and they told me to call the number of a 3rd party group that holds all their employee info.

A few gardening questions:
My mom has an aloe plant currently in a pot. basically brought a plant that wasn't doing too well back to life. Now a couple of the leaves have been turning pale green to yellowish in the middle, getting soft and finally just folding over. What, if anything, is wrong with them and how , if necessary, do we fix it.

Also have some hybiscus where some of the leaves are starting to dry up and curl. As far as I know they've been getting plenty of water.

I'll try to post some pics later.

Back in our day, we had 56k dial-up and we liked it!

Actually, back in my day we had 2400 baud and all 4 of us at university who actually had modems would set up text chat sessions. Ah, the joys of 1987.

Firestormalpha 06-23-2011 05:11 PM

Re: Cloudy's Cafe-a conversation zone- January 2, 2011

And here's the pics from the garden. We kinda started it late and if it looks dry, that's because it's about mid day, and I tend to water in the evening. Let the plants drink up over night.

http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...1_590580_n.jpg Our pineapple. I thought I killed it awhile back when some of the center leaves died and rotted loose, but then I noticed a nice crown of fresh green growing up in the middle.

http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5126880_n.jpg That is a picture of the hibiscus leaf curling up, so if anyone knows that this is anything worse than the normal progress of the plant, please let me know and some possibilities as to how to fix it.

http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4376491_n.jpg And this is the aloe plant. I'm curious about the mid-section of the leaf turning yellow like that. It becomes softer, and eventually can no longer support itself. Is it overwatering, underwatering, too much or too little sun, something worse? All knowledge is appreciated.

http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7823570_n.jpg and that's a picture of what the rest of the garden looks like. The taller plant is a rose bush, all of it's blooms passed their prime not too long ago. Still waiting to see if another batch grow up on us. Any insight on the best way to prune the plant to encourage more blossoms? The shorter plants are dwarf penta's, they're supposed to attract butterflies. The pink ones handled the transplant very well, but the purples had a rough time of it and are only now really bouncing back from it.

You can see it, but behind the post, against the garage is a mango tree that we're going to plant this weekend. For the lunar planters out there, I know it's not anywhere near the waxing moon, but we don't want to let it set for a month before we get it planted.

I remember 56k, when you thought you were going fast if you could download a 1MB file in under a half hour.

SpiritWarrior 06-23-2011 05:59 PM

Re: Cloudy's Cafe-a conversation zone- January 2, 2011

With the Aloe, they don't need THAT much water, be a bit stingy. One time I left some Aloe without water for 2 weeks and it was still alive. If you can, take to watering plants in the morning (say 8am) as opposed to night. Overnight watering can cause a lot of fungus issues for plants as the moisture doesn't dissispate in pots or hard to reach corners all night. Especially if the nights are humid. Humidity + poor ventilation = mold.

Luvian 06-24-2011 09:12 AM

Re: Cloudy's Cafe-a conversation zone- January 2, 2011

I'd try with less water too for a little while. Plus you have to remember that changes are not instant. You won't see the effects of your watering habits until a couple of days later.

I remember when I was proud of my 56k modem. But if I left the computer idle for more than 15 minutes it would disconnect me. So when I wanted to download big files (10-15 megs!) I had to stay at the computer for hours just moving the mouse every couple of minutes. :o

The sound of a modem connecting is so nostalgic I can't help smiling when I hear it.

There are teenagers in high school who do not know what a modem sounds like while establishing a connection--they have never heard one.

What a roller coaster. The old company got sold but I managed to jump sideways from tech support to SQL coding with only a 17% pay cut. Now that all the legal rigmarole settled down my former VP wants to be my new VP again for a 41.7% pay increase over my current position. This, kiddos, is what you call a "no brainer". :D

SpiritWarrior 06-24-2011 03:38 PM

Re: Cloudy's Cafe-a conversation zone- January 2, 2011

IDK, that modem sound evokes negative flashbacks for me. Waiting for pages to load, redialing to get a better connection. Resetting because the connection was dropped. I used to turn the noise off after a time. And this present-day practice of streaming video was incomprehendable at that time. Those flash videos you see on game websites, showcasing the latest trailer for an upcoming title - you'd never see them anywhere on the web back then. At most a website had that horrible low-bit nintendo music added to it. Even now, things have changed so much that it is a rare site that has music on it because its just so annoying.

But then there was great aspects about the internet back then. The thrill of connecting to the world. The free access the internet afforded. Chatrooms. Email - people thought they were elite to have an email address. The innocence of downloading MP3's and not referring to it as piracy, because the laws had yet to deem it so. There was this mindset where people assumed since they weren't getting an actual CD or casette with a cover on it (CD-burners had not hit the mainstream yet - for that matter PC's and modems had barely scratched the surface!), that having just the digital format of the song was okay because it would only play on the computer and wasn't actually "real". The internet was just so new and most lawmakers were from a generation that had trouble even understanding it, nevermind make laws for it. There's something to be said of the way things were. Remember they would call it the "world wide web" on TV rather than just "the internet"? lol. Now you never hear that really.

Whippersnappers.

I remember when we excitedly took notes of which of our customers had finally upgraded to 2400 baud modems... what a joy it was to work on them! Fully twice as fast as the older 1200 baud modems... ;)

'Course, as one of my coworkers pointed out, it doesn't matter what speed the modem's going if your brain is going at 300 baud.... :P

Re: Cloudy's Cafe-a conversation zone- January 2, 2011

The good news is, it's not dead yet. We're thinking of putting in some more dwarf pentas around the others to fill in the spaces. Got another pineapple top to plant. And we just put a young mango tree in the backyard. Held off on watering the Aloe plant for a couple days and it hasn't gotten any better, but it hasn't gotten worse either. (the back of my head says there's something not quite grammatically correct about the previous statement, but I can't quite put my finger on it.)

And to be technical, it's my mom's garden, I just try to take care of it. :P

Some photos:

http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...6_440545_n.jpg
Our second pineapple. Our neighbor kept it in the fridge for two days, not sure if that will impact it's survival odds.

http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7375106_n.jpg
New pineapple planted to the left of the old pineapple. I did this about 30 min. ago.

http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._1718185_n.jpg
View of old pineapple from above. You can see the new growth in the center.

Close up of the new pineapple.

http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._1548498_n.jpg
And finally, the mango tree. Right now, it stands at about my height. So a few inches shy of 6ft.
