GRRRR... The times square bomber
I'm listening to Sen. McCain complain about this puke getting his Maranda rights read to him... Well Senator if we don't read him his rights then citizenship is worthless, I understand there is a public safety exception to having to read him his rights when he was first arrested... well as much as it pains me the AG is correct and actted correctly. There's a world of difference between a US citizen caught on US soil in an act of, or arrested for terrorism (war), and a foreigner caught on US soil in an act of, or arrested for terrorism (war). The US citizen should be charged for treason, while the non US shouldn't. Any US citizen has rights and there is no excuse for not giving them their rights. If we aren't going to make a distinction between citizens and non citizens then we might as well chunk it all in the trash.

Re: GRRRR... The times square bomber
What's treason worth in the US these days? 4 horses and some rope sounds good.

Re: GRRRR... The times square bomber
And put it on pay-per-view to help pay down the deficit...

All I gotta say is; thank god for moronic terrorists! I hope they keep failing....
Bombs made out of popsicles and toothpicks next! The Veteran guy that ran the T-Shirt vendor really is a Hero! As is the cop that put the fire out! Give these guys one of the Goldman Saks bonuses! (Take it away from them) :) |
Re: GRRRR... The times square bomber
Indeed, I wish all criminals (terrorists, pirates, muggers, etc.) were stupid. Like those pirates who tried to hijack a French gunship, or was it a destroyer? I'll have to look it up.

Re: GRRRR... The times square bomber
It looks like an amateurish attempt as far as bombings go. I feel that it's not improbable that this isn't a "typical" terrorist attack in the sense that it's linked to the Taliban/is against the evil heathen Amreekis/revenge for drone attacks etc. It could be that this bloke is angry at Wall St and NYC because it represents what caused the recession and caused him to lose his house. Bit of a way off theory, but right now this doesn't look to have Al Qaeda/the Taliban's fingerprints on it. It seems too amateurish. Plus it's not a suicide bombing, which always increases the chance of failure. Couldn't imagine a group like Al Qaeda or even the Taliban being as sloppy as this (though good for New Yorkers as nobody was injured).

Re: GRRRR... The times square bomber
I think Stephen Colbert's comment summed it up.
His terrorist attack attempt was "Halalious" |
Re: GRRRR... The times square bomber
I thought a Taliban faction in Pakistan admitted responsibility? The problem with these kind of attacks is, amateurish or not, they tie up resources. An amateurish bomb in a big airport would still disrupt flights nationwide.

The know-how behind the attempt would be comical (dry fertiliser go bang? With fireworks?!) if the underlying intent wasn't so serious. The guy wanted to kill lots of innocent people. I don't imagine any official would consider resources "lost" in an operation that appears to have quickly apprehended the would-be terrorist with zero casualties. It is indeed a good demonstration, good practise, good publicity.. |
Re: GRRRR... The times square bomber
It's almost like Wile E. Coyote got recruited by AQ and The Roadrunner is the U.S.A. Beep! Beep!
Did they find an empty A.C.M.E. crate near the scene of the crime? |

Re: GRRRR... The times square bomber
You're right Wellard, get this.... we got some idiot congressman who wants to deport natural born US citizen children of ILLEGAL immigrants.... I'm all for throwing Illegal immigrants out of the US, but not at the cost of any US citizen. Those children have the same rights granted by the US Consititution as I do, sure thier parents are illegal as "Hale" and deserve to be thrown out, but the US Citizen doesn't.

Re: GRRRR... The times square bomber
Terrorism is so 10 years ago. I'm bored. Hear that, terrorists? You're droll.
I do support giving any person under arrest their full rights. Not doing so not only spits on the constitution, it also increases the likelihood that good evidence can get tossed out. In this case, there were actually ~8hrs. of time between arrest and mirandizing. I feel that's too much, but at least it was done. That said, it's kinda BS. Mirandizing is a bit silly. Who doesn't know that they have the right to not talk and have an attorney? I think it ought to include about 3-4 other statements, including a statement that the police are under no obligation to tell you the truth and are permitted to try to trick you with false threats. John D, I'm surprised you support anchor babies. I mean, an Illegal makes a 5 ft hop across a national border and drops her baby and birthing fluids on Arizona soil and -- TA DA!!! -- it's an American. I think the policy is stupid. Send them both back, amniotic sack and all. |

Firstorm, you are right we as a nation better not break up families... which is why I support letting the illegal parents of US citizens stay, until the US Citizen reaches 18 years of age, if the parents haven't obtained citizenship by then, chunk'em out and let the door hit'em in the rear. |
Re: GRRRR... The times square bomber
I'll tell you what I think......
I think it is a difficult question. There is no way that I could write down a hard- and-fast rule that would be reasonable under all circumstances. But I am almost completely sure that we must start by closing the border. Nobody's ideas seem to work well if we don't know who is here. |
Re: GRRRR... The times square bomber
Anyone else hear that the guy went to terrorist training camp? Was I the only one who thought it sounded kind of funny?
6am wake up! 7am prayers! 8am breakfast! 9am exercise! 10:30am storytime! 12:30pm lunch! 1:30pm bomb making! 3pm arts and crafts! 4pm swim time! 4:30 pm snack time! 5pm rhetoric! 6:30pm dinner! 8pm special activities! Field trips, movie night, campfire story telling ("The Woman Who Bared Her Ankles" is popular), or just hanging out! 10pm lights out! |

Be very careful when you call for "security" measures to override civil liberties. As Benjamin Franklin said “Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.”
