Okay, so i'm after two things.
The first is the best/most serious name you've ever given to a character. (And for context, I suppose you'd better include what they were)
The second is the worst/funniest name you've ever given. (Should probably include class again here.)

chinese noodle 10-16-2001 11:22 PM

i use beren for most of my male people (any class) and morwen for most of my chic names (any class as well)

For a great name generator click here. It's especially good with Tolkien names. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Bahamut 10-17-2001 01:42 AM

My own name, Ryan. I take my RPGs very seriously, actually I play them as myself... and then laugh my ass off in the process, but I never name my characters anything else... except when they are women of course... http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif I name them Athena, or Isabel.

The most silly name I ever came up with was Jokla, but only people here get it... maybe Memnoch can... http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Bokken 10-17-2001 01:48 AM

I always call my main character Azur. I've always used a male palladin as my main character.
The most stupid name I gave to a character though was Lor. Don't know what the hell made me come up with that let alone actually use it.

Darlon 10-17-2001 03:16 AM

The name of my 2 main characters are mostly Darlon a caviliar, and Sethron Giornatrion, an elven archer (with a VERY fast shooting rate, say like 3 or 4 shots per round http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif)

The silliest name I probably thought up of is Kelch, and I have no idea what made me come up with name.

Desuma_Malevois 10-17-2001 09:38 AM

I've always preferred names that are somewhat descriptive of the character. My two favorites are the two I'm currently running - Nocturne, a female half-elf blade, and RiffRaff, a male half-orc cleric/thief. My two worst/funniest are Atilla the Hungry, a male halfling barbarian, and L'il Big Dick, a male halfling swashbuckler (and ladies' man http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif ).

BTW, welcome to IronWorks!!

Neb 10-17-2001 09:40 AM

I always use either "Nebucadnezzar", mostly for mages, "Dacuben", usually for fighters, "Razzen", for thieves, Razzen Dac Uben, for any class, the Dac Uben is supposed to be a last name or title sort of thing, like Razzen of Uben or Razzen of the House Uben.

Debaser 10-17-2001 09:45 AM

coolest name i ever thought up (p n p D&D, not baldurs) is Kanai Na'arok. he was a dragonlance character...red-robed wizard of high sorcery. na'arok is elven for ravenflame (his mother's family name)...he was a half-elf, his mother was a human, and his father was not known to him. na' is the flame part, and arok is suppposed to be 'raven'...so it kind of translates to 'flame of raven'.

the funniest name...this leads me to the memory of an in-game NPC that trux (a dude on this board) once made up when we were playing d&d....
Bonbar! (pronounced BONE-bar)
i had a laughing fit from hell when i first heard that.

Morgeruat 10-17-2001 10:40 AM

hmm, the silliest for me was Yeoman Johnson, a generic name given to the redshirts in the away teams, that always got blasted right away on the original star treck series.

best would have to have been Zevin the Juggernaught, a gnomish fighter, of average str, and uncommon wit for a gnome (ie he was stupid)

Nith 10-17-2001 11:51 AM

My best name was Magnaus the monk with fists of mithril. My sillest was Fry and average boring fighter.

Well.. I tend to shoot the normal here...
My character's supporting my fiance's game are:
Gwendolyn Fyre: Sorceress
Jezzie: Fighter/ Thief

I had a Cleric named Constance... and a Bard named Melina

And once I had a male character named Tim. He was a ... well.. guess.

StarVid 10-17-2001 12:32 PM

This will only make sense if you're familiar with The Frogs (music group), but I named one of my mages that I indeded to kit into a wild mage Starsurge, and a bard I was going to kit into a blade, Starblade. Otherwise I use character names from Red Dwarf (English comedy). Or I'll use anime characters: Jubei (Ninja Scroll), Jiro (dagger of Kamui), Takashi (Akira), Tetsou (Akira). The thing is that I'm a chronic restarter so I never actually beat the game with any of these, so I picked up a new strategy and just began playing with a Wild Mage named Michael (after myself, of course).

StarVid 10-17-2001 12:34 PM

as for that name generator, how does that work? I tried it, and it looks like I could have gotten the same names if I just rolled them out on a scattergories dice.

Epona 10-17-2001 12:44 PM

I most often use names of gods/goddesses for my characters. Recent ones include:

Epona
Morrigan
Brigit
Minerva
Dionysos
Athene
Apollo

etc. etc. (yes, I too am a chronic restarter)

The name generator works by using lists and picking random combinations. Let's say it uses two lists, one with first parts of names and one with second parts.
Now let's assume that both lists consist of only three name parts with

list one: Gan, Lego, Elro
list two: dalf, las, hir

Each time you ask the generator to make a name you'll get a random combination. In this case, that could be Gandalf, Ganlas, Ganhir, Legodalf, Legolas, Legohir, Elrodalf, Elrolas or Elrohir.

As you can see from the example, most names are very unrealistic and therefor quite useless. Some names are acceptible, while only a few, excluding the original names, are really good combinations. Naturally, the larger the lists, the more possibilities and the more good name combinations (this has quite a lot to do with the position of the vowels in the different parts).

BTW, I usually steal my names from Tolkien (like Elrohir, Eowyn and see left/below)

I'm a fighter/cleric in my current game and I've used the name Eric Vanstraaten. He's a warrior that actually joins you later on in BG II. He's awesome and he's up there with Drizzt and Elminster, IMHO http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...s/rolleyes.gif

daeomer 10-17-2001 02:23 PM

I guess that the names I like best for my characters and which get used the most would be:

Daeomer Fallon: Paladin (usually)
Brenner Ronin: Ranger
Cynder or Fyre: Female Mages

I guess that the lamest name would be Willowflame (Elven Mage)

Mel 10-17-2001 05:11 PM

My best name was (Sir) Sparhawk (paladin). Due to a lack of imagination I stole the name from David Eddings.
My worst name was Velvet (short-lived thief). Name also stolen from David eddings. My other worst name was Arwen (fighter) stolen from Tolkien. The very memory of that character makes me shudder (despite the fact that she was my only character to finish BG1 and I'm now writing a story about her).

Drifter 10-17-2001 08:10 PM

I've got a few names running around. Without doubt, the worst/funniest would have to have been a mage called "Bob". he didn't last long.
The name attached to the best character was "Equadior". he was a mage in BG1, and I finished the entire game travelling solo with him.
At the moment, i've got two main characters: He'ret is a conjuror (half-elf), and Ashnach Du'Oberet is a Dwarven Battlerager.

Cerek the Barbaric 10-30-2001 03:01 PM

This is my "maiden voyage" through the Baldur's Gate series, so all of my character names come from PnP AD&D games.

NOTABLE PC'S
Gramluk Ironfist - Dwarven fighter.
Zachary Thorrson - Human Cleric of Odin. Through an incredible series of events from overly generous DM's, Zachary came to believe he was the "Chosen of Odin". He was a nice guy, but was only slightly less annoying than Anomen.
Keporith Quickfingers - Halfling Thief.

NOTABLE NPC'S
Dirk - Dwarven fighter specialized in daggers.
Gatlin - Quickling specialized in darts. (thought up by my college roommate, Scott P.)

My most descriptive names ever were:
Skrag - Half-ogre fighter (Wolverine fans will understand this name).
Anthony Brawn - An alien played in a sci-fi RPG. He was a cross between a tiger and a human - and was known as "Tony, the Tiger".
Robert Plant - A vegetative alien life form played in a very early PC-based RPG (the name of which escapes me).

With the exception of Robert and Tony, ALL of my character names are originals. And I never use the same name twice.

Mitro Jellywadder 10-30-2001 03:07 PM

Fast Fingers Freddy ...(guess what he was)
Ug Le Heller (1/2 orc cleric)
Tremble Fist (monk)

My favorite character now Lady Die

Madman-Rogovich 10-30-2001 03:14 PM

my best name was and is for my male paladin Ackmackten which means Ack = AK and mackten = mac 10 .. well i like it . oh and worst was a transvestite half-orc named Mad- mavis

Chris77Se 10-30-2001 03:28 PM

Hm, all my male chars are named Vangorn (no, I didn´t steal it from the Lord of the rings but from a Fighting Fantasy Solo RP book, but maybe the authors borrowed it at JRR Tolkien). My female chars are normally named Dana...

Keylow 10-30-2001 03:42 PM

Here's some names I've used over the years...
Aramon Stormfire
Korath Thundercrash
Malakar Greystone
Lirianna Greystone
Opheria Windcry
Torianus Ikariot
Darin Windhammer

I almost always give my chars last names because...well, because it's cool http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Talamir 10-30-2001 03:45 PM

Most commonly I use Talamir. He's USUALLY a Paldin, but being as how Pally's have to be lawful good, and I want to be neut (for Jaheira), I made him a fighter this time 'round.

Telfarne, my barb name, has always seemed rather retarded. NTL, it is a set name in my writings, and until I have the willpower to sit for an hour or more to think up something better, that remains as my barb/berserker name.

If you've ever seen Talamir or Telfarne somewhere, and know where, please tell me. They are characters in writings of mine, and I do not wish to take names from something else (nor do I wish them to be "taken" from me).

Montravant 10-30-2001 04:43 PM

I use Montravant to name all my characters. Exept the one my bro created for me, i named him Gaylord. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no.../1grlaugh2.gifhttp://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no.../1grlaugh2.gif

andora20 10-30-2001 07:02 PM

My Main Charachter at the moment is called Marcus Arcanus he is a fighter/mage. I think the most unoriginal name I picked out was Whiskas he was one of my characters from Wizards and Warriors, if u got the game you should have a fair idea of what he was........

------------------
Carpe Diem, Carpe Jugulem

Barry the Sprout 10-30-2001 07:29 PM

My most sucessful character is a Necromancer named Heinrich (for all you Warhammer fans out their).

I have also used a bard called Red which was more based on me (Red Mike is my nickname to my friends for various reasons).

And finally I have a fighter/mage dual class called Hugo Rune (who is based on the books of that great lord of all Robert Rankin - note, if you get that reference then you might understand my forum name).

------------------
Life is like a piece of cheese. Mice only enjoy it in cartoons and it is better with toast.

AzRaeL StoRmBlaDe 10-30-2001 08:09 PM

my favorite name is Azrael Stormblade, for most fighters. The worst name I had was Kencin Kilkadin and he was some dwarven fighter. i just got him drunk all the time, it was a riot. UGGh was the name for a HALF/ORC FIGHT I USED AS WELL.
also for wild mages i usually use Zander PoofenBoomer. (don't even ask)

Quikdeth 10-30-2001 08:29 PM

I always name my main character Bane be it male or female. The silliest name I ever used was Goatf#*k (don't want to cuss). That was the name I gave that pilot dude in Final Fantasy 7. I also like the name Sebastian and I'll use it alot if I'm playing a game where you can name supporting characters yourself.

Lioness 10-30-2001 08:43 PM

All my warrioresses(Kensai, fighter-mage) are Galadrial(real original, huh?) and my rangers are Sharra. When i make characters for a multi, I usually name them all out of books, my most recent group was all female, named from the Song of the Lioness Quartet.

Well, Ryan, it seems we had the same silliest name used for the time being. Except that I actually had MasJokla and Bading (would have called Yoshimo that myself had I been able to as he kept running away when hit). By the way, Pinoy ba si Memnoch? Why would he know?

I never realized there are so many messed up names out there!http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif
Actually, I came across another good one the other day - a half/orc Priest of Talos called....wait for it .... Gork BoogerEater.
If whoever owns this name frequents the forum, and this is actually a serious name as opposed to a humerous one - I apologize.
