pls pose your opinions.. this has been bugging me for a couple of days.. i know that in religious marriage (like muslim) you can have more than 1 wives.. but in state marriage.. for a country like australia or usa, is it also possible to have 1 man with 2 women or 2 men with 1 woman. if so.. do you get the same privilages as a married couple except its 3-way?

Right, but they aren't reconized legally.Thier wouldn't be any legal benifits like for taxes, and benifits, and you could be arrested on charges of bigimy(sp).

Only one and one marriage is legal here in Sweden as it is in most Western countries.

Cool question but why do we have laws about how many you can be married to? if a man or a woman will be married to 100 persons so let them i cant understand why we must have regulations about this anyway.

Why would you want more than one at a time? Imagine being married to several wives, all having PMS at the same time, or several husbands, all leaving their dirty underwear in the middle of the floor, etc. Plus, if you're in an accident, lying unconscious in the emergency room, and the doctor needs your spouse to make a decision about your treatment, you could die while they have a committee meeting.

If one man married 100 wives, 1 company insurance policy would have to have 98 more people covered on the family plan, and would in turn raise the cost of keeping the worker to astronomical levels. Also, imagine the IRS's horror when the man declares 100 dependents.

If there were no legal benefits to marriage, bigamy and polygamy would not matter so much. However, marriage brings legal benefits, some of which cost third parties money, ergo it is of interest.

In the US, 1 on 1, even for mormons. Other marriages do happen, but are null and void after the first marriage.

I would be interested in knowing how some Muslim countries deal with this. One way is to have only religious marriage, with no "legal" (think "governmental") involvement in the marriage and therefore no legal benefits.
