I have a book called "The Book Of Rock Lists" ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0671787004/qid%3D1028 458329/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/002-3001156-4397632 )It's a good book!

And there is a list of bands and their names before the hit.

Here are some:
The Detours, The High Numbers = The Who
Earth = Black Sabbath
Soft White Underbelly, The Stalk-Forrest Group = Blue Oyster Cult
The Tangerine Puppets = The Ramones
Mammoth = Van Halen
The Farriss Btothers = INXS
The Beefeaters = The Byrds
The Warlocks = The Grateful Dead
The Tourists = The Eurythmics
Smile = Queen
The Screaming Abdabs = Pink Floyd
The Hallucinations = J.Geils Band
Johnny and the Self-Abusers = Simple Minds
London = Motley Crue
Mudcrutch = Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Praise of Lemmings = Culture Club

And last but not least...

Pud = The Doobie Brothers! :D

Blue Oyster Cult took their name from an anagram of the beer that they were drinking. 'Cully Stout Beer'

I knew that, being an old BOC fan. Btw, a Google search for Cully Stout Beer turned up this.

How about names bands could have had?

Before Journey recorded it's first album they were looking for that "just right" name and they had a contest. The names weren't very appealing, so a roadie suggested Journey and that's what they eventually went with.

The name that could have been?

One of the contest entries, my favorite, was "Rumpled Foreskin".

LOL!
