Yeah we use ergometers. We even won an ergometer competition (6 kilometres), which was pretty hard, because we had to start over due to technical malfunction. Eventually we had 'rowed' almost 9 kilometres, with an average (/500 m) of 1.54, which is pretty decent, IMHO.

I row in the leight weigth eight, which means that I am allowed to have a maximum weight of 72.5 kilograms, with a team average of 70 kilograms. The boat looks somewhat like this (use your imagination ;) ):

front (dunno technical English term)

Hope this works out, cos I'm not too sure about it The horizontal lines are the oars, of course, and as you can see there are eight of them. I usually sit on place number 6 (counting starts at the front).

I used to race two man canoe's in the Boy Scout's. My troop was number 1 in the state :D There is nothing better the going through a back water swamp filled with alligator's and haveing to hop out of the canoe to pull it over a fallen tree in the water and sinking into the muck. Was rahter pleasent :D Nowadays I'm lucky if I get to go to the beach for a swim. :(

Rowing? Cool! I knew some people who got up at unbelievably early times of the day to do that! :D How often do you have to go to practice for something like that?

No worries, I'm not in a lightning sort of mood today. ;) Have to go get some work done, though.

Thanks for the diagram.
You've got one of those long boats, I don't know the name either, the Calpe doesn't use them but I've seen them in action.

Do you have any Ergo rac times so that we can compare?

The only ones I can recall exaclty are

2KM-7 minutes 14 seconds (average 1:51)
15KM-1 hour and 5 seconds(Average 2:03)

I'm one of the lightest rowers in the club at 60kg, in contrast the heaviest is 95KG :D (I also happen to be his double partner which has earned us the nickname of little and large :D )

Weight isn't a factor in doubles and sculls thankfully, otherwise we might be in trouble :D
