Not at all Jerome. I agree, and even those are falling. Perhaps there's a change in the wind.

Why did I quote that? Does it have any relevance? Maybe, but I thought I would just point it out.

I have seen this occur in every busy forum, where the veterans make known their dismay that the state of the forum was getting chaotic. Inevitably, the newbies and middlebies are blamed or shoulder most of the blame.

Maybe they have a case, maybe they do not. However, did the mentioned 'culprits' truly cause harm to the forum? Were their intentions bad? What is the definition of 'bad spam' in here anyway? Last I recall, bad spam includes,

1) Posting for the sole purpose of increasing one's post count.
2) Random nonsensical babble( note, by nonsensical, I really mean nonsensical).

Did I leave out any other definitions? Assuming only these two, do they apply to the mentioned threads? Were they created with good fun in mind?

Maybe some of them do not belong in GD, like the light-hearted RPing ones. I agree with this actually, as the RP Forum was created for both light-hearted and serious-toned RPing. Other than that however, are they really harmful?

Oh well, here's to harmony. ;)

Yes, but when it was world cup time there were lots of football threads, weren't there? And if you'll let us decide then I decide that football threads are drivel.

Perhaps you shouldn't call our fun drivel just because you don't enjoy it. It isn't harming anyone, it isn't crashing the boards. If you don't like it, just ignore it. This thread is pushing good threads off of the main page And it's just unconstructive drivel. It should have been a PM to the mods instead of a public thread.

I seem to have started something with the use of the word "drivel" and I want to post my apologies to anyone offended for thinking that just because they are starting or participating in "FUN" threads, that they are now being referred to as "drivel".
That wasn't my intention and I apologize...I should probably have used another word to describe the non-serious threads but at the time I started posting it was off topic drivel in others threads at the forefront of my mind.

Aieeey! I need to get some web pages finished for the move.
Everyone, kiss each other and make up!
I want to see community love and coooperation restored here when I return!

Well said by the cinnamom coated Briton - so that makes 8 or 9 now Mr Nebulous - I have nearly used up all my fingers, and will have to take my shoes and socks off to keep count soon :D .

Well I think I am allowed to have an opinion too - SO - I have to agree that drivel (call it if you want) has been on the increase. I am not about to point fingers at threads or name names - if you are feeling defensive at my last comment then you probably have some reason for self analysis. I challenged a few people a week or two ago to see if they could lengthen there average posts to something that axceeded half a line (including the smileys). Several of the posts I have read recently would have been better off being held on the IW chat, because the content was little else.

I am not against fun - I am not a wowser - I like to play. The types of posts being discussed by this thread have a place - the point of view that I support is that they are becoming a dominant trend, and I challenge the view that that is a good thing.

Davros, first of all not all of us can access the IW chat at all. And in addition to that not all of us would want to, I chat with those that I want to using MSN, a far superior chat program. And what I chat with them about might sometimes be called spam as well.

Oh and I suggest keeping your shoes on. I think that most people here on IW like to have fun. I can't see why you have a problem with our "drivel", it harms noone and it doesn't push any live topics off of the first page. Should we slam down on your sports threads as well? Tell you that it's better kept to the IW chat than the forums? You could do most of the stuff that's posted in the sports threads in the chat as well.

Lord Shield 08-25-2002 08:21 AM

Davros, I agree to a certain extent

When I started the poke thread i fully expecteed it to be lockafter after 2 ior 3 pages. It's carried on for ages but I don't read it anymore. I did question a mod on it and was told it was harmless fun for the moment and could stay (this was BEFORE this thread started - see that hint - ask a mod, folks!)

The Auction thread is no better/worse than the threads of old on say "limericks of members" and so forth (which I did enjoy - well done, Jerome and Lioness)

as for the "Chat" aspect is that not what the cafe was spawned to include?

Sir ReGiN 08-25-2002 08:24 AM

Some people like it, some people don't. It's the same with every thread.
No one is entitled to say what is spam and what is not, except Ziroc and the other mods. So Donut, I think you are going to far with this thread. It should've been handled in a PM.

No need to get snaky Nebbie dear - I am not taking a shot at you at all . In fact the converse is true for you (maybe the confusion has arisen because of my Antipodeaness - hmm, that's probably not a real word is it?). The fact ole boy, is that while I may not always agree with your point of view, I respect the fact that you typically take the effort of using a paragraph or two to articulate it.

There are those that spam and "have fun" at times (and I would tend to include both of us in that category), and there are those that spam almost exclusively. My view of the current trend happens to coincide with my good friend Donut - the forum is taking a fundamental shift towards the latter - have I been a trifle more distinct this time?
