Re: New Art for default DC
Ah - browsers will do that...
Hmm - a dwarf, eh? :D Guess she shaved, then... ;) |
Re: New Art for default DC
I am not of the persuasion that gives lady dwarves beards. :) Plus, the Monster Manual isn't explicit about facial hair for both genders. ;)

Re: New Art for default DC
I agree. I once had a boxed set of the RPG RuneQuest, and they had pictures of various races that you could draw a character pic with on the player character sheets. The female dwarf may have looked like a pudgy midget, but she had no beard. That is the mental image of a female dwarf to me. Also there was a smallpic of a female dwarf with a big nose in FRUA that had no beard (I wanna say the pic name was "Grunshka" or something like that).

Good ol' Grunschka. She was one homely lady. :) No wonder she became an adventurer. ;)

Re: New Art for default DC
I think that, in general, fantasy dwarves are all basically derived from Tolkien's works. That said, many people are psychologically against females with beards :D so people tend to break this rule here and there (especially in the CRPGs of Japan and such, but also in America/UK).
Still, I have noticed bearded female dwarves in various AD&D supplements (notably Forgotten Realms), including notes about female dwarves who want to hide their sex from male dwarves (by growing long beards and wearing male clothing) and pictures of dwarven priests (priestesses tend to have beards/moustaches, although many of them had at least the top or bottom shaved off). My favorite fantasy artist, Larry Elmore, doesn't seem to have drawn any female bearded dwarves, though :D |
Re: New Art for default DC
Although we talk about fantasy, considering the evolutionary aspect I would state that some hominide species should have females with beards.
Uatu is probably right that there is a psychological barrier preventing us from imagining bearded woman. Fantasy artists (at least the well-known) generally tend to draw beautiful women rather than ugly (just look at Uatu's and Manikus' character pics :D ). Thus the (probably repulsive) bearded female dwarf is seldom depicted. |
Re: New Art for default DC
Well, gotta say that drawing something beautiful is much easier on the hands and eyes than drawing something repulsive (sorry, Dinonykos, but I am probably not going to draw that penanggalan since I have reviewed it and found it to be horrifyingly repulsive :D ).
That said, a bearded dwarfette is probably not THAT bad - but there are only a few images I have seen so far (AD&D supplements). Larry Elmore's female dwarves were far more comely - and completely shaved! :D |

I got motivated yesterday, so now we an all say hello to spic9.
Everybody now, "Hello spic9!" |
Re: New Art for default DC
Helloooo spic9! :D
Very nice work, manikus! Nice and woodsy. |
Re: New Art for default DC
I've got one more woodsy one to do - the female druid. I might re-do the male druid pic as well...I think if the wolf were darker it would look better, I also thought about using a different animal (or animals), but maybe I'll just do that with his female counterpart instead.
I really want to do the gnomes. :) I've got some ideas, but they'll have to wait until Sunday - homework and family stuff (plus class tomorrow morning). How do you think the halflings should look? I'm kinda predisposed to make them look hobbitish...but I kinda like the idea of a buff fighter, too. :D:D:D I guess I'll just have to go with something and see if it works. :) |
