And Bethesda is meticulous with all their games, I'd imagine all Fallout III fans would be jumping for joy for Bethesda taking the project.

Actually, no. The initial reaction was quite negative. That's due to the fact that Interplay, the publishing company who had the rights for the Fallout series, put it up in an auction. In the auction, Troika Games, the company leaded by people who created Fallout 1 and thus created the theme and the feel for the series, wished to buy it but Bethesda had more money so they got the series. Basically, Troika Games saw their own lisence being sold off to another.

"Morrowind with guns" was the initial negative reaction for the fans. The situation has improved however, now that Bethesda's developers themselves went to nma-fallout.com forums to assure people that Fallout III is going to be considerably different from Morrowind and that they'll take the time and effort to make it a great game.
</font>
Really? I find that very surprising. Just because a developer such as Bethesda has only really developed one large (and successful) series doesn't mean that every other game will be a carbon copy of that series. People irritate me.

Well either way even though I will not play Fallout III, nor am I a fan, I would be more than pleased to have Bethesda developing it. They take their games seriously, and since they are mainly "independant" they can take as much time to finish a great product without the money grubbers cutting developing time short.

Bethesda's (the developing company) Morrowind was breath-takingly huge, beautiful and detail-rich game, the only great flaw being that the character interaction was extremely shallow. However, Bethesda built a new AI system for Oblivion that will definitely rock. Additionally, they've been working on the game since 2002, and as is evident from the screenshots and interviews, the enviroment, atmosphere and therefore the feel of the game will be something unlike we've ever seen in computer games. It doesn't take a genious to see that I'm extremely excited about the game. :D

Oblivion will be awesome i agree. But no matter how much hard work Bethesda does, it will not be near perfect. Far from it. Their concept of rpg has really let the cat out of the bag. And that angry little furbag could run in any and all directions. I've tried several times to compose my thoughts and ideas about Morrowind into legible notes but failed badly. There's just too much potential here...

(Geniuses out there should note that i too am excited about Oblivion ;) )

Lol vaskez. Don't worry about the hijackers. In a way, they're contributing to the active discussion and thereby helping to restore the IW of old. (Or is it "we are" since i seem to have posted off topic myself.) Feel free to diss us tho' :D

</font>
Care to discuss the little furbag some more, then? I'd be more than happy to share my views with you

Certainly. I've made a small start to reviving the ES forum. Give me a little bit to prepare my past failures and we'll crank it up again.

Ah this IS more like the IW of old. You gotta start a thread about how quiet it is to get people spamming and talking all kinds of crap :D

I would say that the fans' dissatisfaction in the matter is well-grounded.

Might I remind you that months before the auction, Black Isle had already been working on Fallout III for approximately 2 years. Much of the game had been completed and even screenshots were released. Furthermore, Fallout III was precisely as the fans wanted it - it used a top-down isometric view, turn-based combat and the SPECIAL rules system as did Fallout I and II.

Then Interplay cancelled the project without any satisfying reason. The developers and fans both were enraged at Interplay's decision. There are still fragments of the Fallout III that "would have been" in nma-fallout.com and duckandcover.cx.

Then Interplay itself surprisingly developed a new Fallout game - Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. Nonetheless, it soon became apparent that the game was intentionally made to stain the Fallout series. The official forum for the game was soon flooded with the Fallout fanboys' furious flaming, enough so to make Interplay close down the forum until the game finishes. You can read more about the game here.

And then, Interplay simply sold the lisence to the highest bidder. Personally, I think the fans' anger is justified.

Ooh, such drama and intrigues in game development. :D

Indeed. Publishers have wrecked many a game with their rushing. Dungeon Lords is an excellent example of that.

Well, I hope Oblivion is better than Morrowind. I hated that game.

Not that I want to stay off-topic but why so? Wasn't it just satisfying to journey around all those pretty swamps, mountains and forests and look at the pretty skies, sometimes engraved with aurorae, in different types of weather, all the while increasing your athletics and acrobatics skills? </font>
I hated wandering around that huge landscape all by myself with all those FedEx quests. Ugh. I never came close to finishing it, and ended up giving it away just to get it out of the house. I hated being reminded of wasting money on it.

I have little doubt that NWNII will be a fancy game. I honestly didn't like the first one due to the clunky engine and computer-ish interface screens which took away from the game's atmosphere, not to mention the mediocre official campaign. The reason I'm excited about the second episode is that it shall be developed by Obsidian Entertainment, which now contains some key figures from Black Isle. Chris Avellone, the main writer of Planescape: Torment (which I regard as the greatest RPG of all time) is writing for NWN II.

The fact that Obsidian Entertainment is the developer is that part that really scares me. Nobody is still sure who's responsible for KOTOR 2, whether it be Obsidian or Lucas Arts but that's an example of a game that was rushed to market before it was ready, huge bugs, cut content etc... Don't get me wrong KOTOR 2 was still a good game, but it could have been a great game if the time was taken to finish it.
