Our "end", in Afghanistan will not be found by the death of Al Queda, or the Taliban. Only when a legitimate government can be put in place, will we see the close of the Afghan chapter on the "War on Terrorism" then what?....Iraq is next!......Wanna make a bet? http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

I agree that Iraq is next. However, when we DO succeed in overturning the Taliban, if the new government of Afghanistan mess up in the future, it will be forever perceived as 'America's screw up'. No one will remember the faults of the Taliban. This is the problem I have. Everyone wants a better world, but when it's messed up, everyone looks around for someone to blame. Usually, since America is on the frontline, trying to right the wrongs, it falls back on us.

We are Americans!.....and we are damn good at war! Lets just hope and pray that our leaders have studied their history and don't make the same mistakes we've made in the past! To hell with what people think! We have the entire world( except 3 or 4 nations) behind us! Once a new government is in place, its their duty to maintain peace and not harbor known terrorist groups! If they don't......they deserve what they get!

I'm not that worried about the Northern Alliance, It's the Pakistanis that I worry more about. Even though we have the Pakistanis by the short hairs (they NEED us, they need allies in their squable with India). If I remember correctly it was the Pakistanis that had the armor support, in place for our S.F. in Somalia. They took their sweet time, and cost us 18 people, mark my words watch'em.

I too, question our allies. After all, we are supporting the Northern Alliance for a good cause. If they turn into disgusting monsters like the Taliban did, it will be America's fault just like it was when bin Laden became an evil monster. (We save our troops by helping a front that wants the same thing that we do and we are forever responsible for them in some's eyes. Kind of like the ancient thought that if you save a man's life you are responsible for it) No matter what you do, you will be condemned.

Hey, Liliara!? We agree about something, lol!
If I recall correctly, the Afghani population in general were never that keen on the people who are now 'the Northern Alliance' and I think they don't want THEM any more than they want the Taliban. They really will not be any better, imo.
I don't have any answers to this problem though. The Afghanis need free and fair elections, but how to set up such a system? And who would offer themselves for election anyway? You'd need to be pretty brave to stand for election against the Taliban and the NA! They'd both be quite capable of shooting you or dosing your breakfast with anthrax, imo. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif

I agree with you both. The NA alliance is no better. Personnally, I don't see any problems with the Talibans that would not occur with the NA. There are too many tribes in Afghanistan to hope to have good and liked governement in place. I personnally think that in situation like this dictatorship happens to be the way to go to keep a nation going. For those in doubt, see Tito in Yougoslavia. The guy was harsh but the country did run somewhat smoothly. The problem is that we have to find a dictator that 1- will not commit genocide 2- will repect the west and 3- that will be accepted by the greater population. It's sad, but if the country has any hopes for peace, that's the way it will have to go.

BTW: I'm not too worried about the Tali or the NA having Anthrax. They're not terrorists but they'd be more than happy to shoot you though!

I kinda agree, but one major thing I think that would be better if the NA were in control is that they 'allow' the females to work, and have MUCH more freedom. The Taliban don't allow the female citizens to work, or even leave their homes sometimes.. And the must BEG to feed their children. That is what is so heartbreaking. And if they are seen begging sometimes, they are beaten or stoned. God...

I see your point Z. But having to women work is really not the issue here. Yes, I agree, it would be nice but really, it's unconsequential.

About the feeding, I'm sorry, but I'm heartless. My point of view on this is "if you can't take care of your children, you shouldn't have children". I know that some of them were rapped and got pregnant. But lets face it, I doubt that more than 100,000 of the children would come from rape. That leaves over a million (or more) that are legitimate.

I've seen the Third world first hand and I can tell you that it's not a pretty sight. I've seen people dying in the streets; dead (and not yet dead) people being tossed into garbage trucks to make room for new people to crow the sidewalks; men and women alike being forced into prostitution; people paying a dime to have sex with someone infected with AIDS and a quarter for someone that's "clean"; people paying 75 cents to have sex with a goat rather than a woman. It's sick, it's sad, but it's not my problem and I have no intention of making it my problem!

Ryanamur?! I'm stunned. I would never have expected a viewpoint like that from you!

I heard the Coalition was seeking to reinstall the old King of Afgahnistan as a way of bringing order to the tribes.
