Stealthy, there are alot of programs to make animated gifs in, bmp files can´t be animated only gif´s. Jpeg are great for photos and gif´s for animations and logotype pics with a few color in it. BMP is windows standard picture format. Great for backgrounds and such, but a wuite large format though.
If youwant a great free program you should download AcdSee which is a picture viewing program but in it you can convert pictures to different types (though not gifs) but non the less it´s a great program to view and control picds with. For thoose who really like to work with images there is programs you have to buy, like Image ready from Adobe, Fireworks from Macromedia, Ulead has soem cool stuff and we have Gif animator.

Did I lost myself again somewhere along all this, damn all that wine ..
