Very good post, Aelia, and one with several points that I was going to make. I will add that they had to cut the Shelob scene from TTT, and it will be in ROTK. It is, after all, the shortest of the books , and can take a little addition, especially if the Scouring of the Shire is left out.
If you read the little chronology in the appendix of LotR, Frodo reaches Shelob's lair at the same time as Aragorn takes the Paths of the Dead. So, Peter Jackson is getting it RIGHT

The movie was great. Cried 2 times! Battle scenes were awesome. Am seeing it again :D

nearly brought a tear to my eye when the young Rohan boy was been fitted out with armour... the loss of innocence is the greatest crime.

Well, the whole business about the elves at Helm's Deep was uncanonical. I think PJ just did it to get more Elves in it.

I think it was a "feel good" thing... show all the good races of Middle Earth fighting evil together, although IMO if he was going to break with the story he should've thrown more Dwarves in too. IMO it wasn't a necessary change, and as I said before, IMO they "weakened" the elves ability with bows to put them there. Give me that many Elven archers, good water, and a backdoor resupply (through the caves) and I'd have held Helms Deep FOREVER.

They were, till the walls were breached by the explosion.

Uncanonical?!? Not a bit of it. The discussion and debate to lend military aid the forces of Man between Galadriel, Elrond et al is straight out of the Books of Lost Tales. Jackson just decided to have them vote YES instead of NO this time.

Out of the books as part of the original story or not, it brought a tear to my eye as they marched in to the rescue. I think it was a great move by Jackson.
