Either that, or go completely the other way; have the main character as the original character, but old - an old man or woman, forced to take up the sword or the staff once more and come out of retirement to defend against evil... your character would be weaker, slower and have several penalties due to age, but then that does solve the problem of game balance...

Why take your character as old, goin bald, and takes a long time on the toilet? I mean, you fought off a war with Sarevok, went through Baldur's Gate, went through Hell for a couple of days, and may have become a god, or may have turned it down, there's not THAT much left to do if you think about it.
