Silk worms are the larvae or caterpillar of a silk moth (or any of several species that produce silk). When the larvae spin their coccoon to metamorphose into a butterfly, they spin it out of strong fibres that can be collected and processed to form silk.

No that's not a dircet quote, I visited a silk farm in Cambodia last Christmas.
