Was the Masked Man answer right? Because I was thinking that John's home was prison, he was on his way to die, and the masked man's job was an executioner. Call me demented.

Mel's answer is correct (although an hour might be a bit excessive). Turn one bulb on for a while, then turn it off and turn on another one. Upstairs you will have three bulbs: one on, one off but warm, and one off but cold.

As for the masked man answer, we'll have to see... I kind of like your response :D
