Re: Dystopia: The Fallen Angels

(Scott Avery)
Spoiler for post:
Through Thermal Vision, you spot two large persons at about twenty meters away, and a smaller one moving towards them. One of the two appears to be firing at random in your direction. Because of the low rate of fire of his weapon, you think it likely he (or she) is using an old energy rifle. Still, despite the fact that he obviously can't seen you (or is a really bad marksman), it's only a matter of time before he scores a lucky hit.
The third person stops a few meters behind the duo and says: ,,The defenders have flamethrowers. They have stopped our attack.'' The voice sounds familiar to you, and you watch one of the armed men in front of you whirl around. He hesitates for a mere moment, then (judging by his stance - you can't seen his weapon on Thermal) raises his weapon.

((OOC: you are carrying a sidearm, right?))

One of the Techs nods, then leaves the Bridge. A few disquieting minutes later, the lights fail again. Only this time, the sparsely placed crimson emergency lights are activated straight away, indicating a structural problem with the main generator, the relays or both. The fact that the room is now cloaked in an eery red glow does little for your nerves. The Bridge-Computers are briefly de-activated as well, although they reboot when emergency power kicks in.

Locking his sites on the newest arrival, Scott put his cross hairs on the persons right knee and squeezed off a shot then moved to a different location down the hall and readied another shot for the original shooter.

Spoiler for post:
Your first mark lights up like a candle on your thermal vision. From this distance, you could have shot the proverbial straw from his mouth. You raise your gun and pull the trigger.
Almost instantly, the man collapses to the ground.
Your gun recharges itself in a fraction of a second and you target the large man that is still firing in your direction. Your pistol is still set on stun.

Spoiler for post:
For a moment, nothing happens. Suddenly, a flash briefly lifts the darkness and you feel your muscles going numb. Before you can do as much as blink, you drop to the deck like a sack of stones. Luckily, you don't feel the impact. In fact, you don't feel much of anything. Even though your knowledge of weapons is limited, you deduct that you've probably been hit by an 'Eel', or another kind of light energy-weapon.

An uncomfortable silence has fallen over the Bridge. Most of the men are simply staring at their monitors, which are filled with seemingly endless amounts of data, all irrelevant to your current predicament.
The Comm-Liason breaks the silence, and you spot several crewmembers briefly glaring in her direction.
,,Captain, I have the leader of the refugees on the Comm. She wishes to speak to you personally.'', she says.

Much to your surprise, the main screen is activated and you find yourself staring at a young woman with somewhat hawkish features and small eyes. Although you're positive that the Bridge-Cam is offline, the woman appears to be looking directly at you and a thin smile forms on her lips. Judging by the look on the face of the Comm-Liason, this transmission was meant to be set to audio-only. Apparently, the woman likes to make an impression.
,,Captain Messman. I do so regret you weren't here to meet us in person'', she says. Her voice booms through the speakers and echoes through the Bridge, and you find yourself wondering who is regulating the volume. The camera zooms out, and gives you an impression of the state the Launchbay is in. The floor is littered with motionless bodies and one of the walls is covered with scorch-marks.
,,Unfortunately, we were unable to repay your hospitality in kind. But if it's any kind of consolation: we payed for our intrusion with many lives, whereas most of your men are still very much in one piece. Now, whether or not they stay that way is up to you. Power will be restored in a few minutes, after which you'll plot a course for Wayfarer 6. Upon our arrival there, we will surrender to FedSec. Needless to say, if you make any attempt to retake Deck 4 by force, we'll start executing the very fine members of your crew. Any attempt at a delay, and we'll do the same.'' She smirks and her image begins to fade. ,,Have a nice day.. captain.'' A fraction of a second later, the screen turns black.

Spoiler for post:
He didn't even feel the jolting pain he should have felt as he tumbled to the ground. The adrenaline still pumped inside of his veins, dissipating fear, introducing bravery. But none of that was going to help him if he couldn't move a single muscle in his body. He had to somehow shake off the effects of whatever he had been hit with.

Reckless and uncalled for, as far as he was concerned. But he was hardly in a fair mood to begin with, and happy thoughts were far away.

Re: Dystopia: The Fallen Angels

(Ricor Messman)

The Tac-Liason glares at his datapad before replying. ,,Sir, our men have already moved to contain the situation, and we're positive that we can stop whatever crawls out of the elevator-shafts. Unfortunately, we know nothing about enemy numbers or armement. If the number of shuttles they've used is any indication, there could be well over a hundred of them on deck 4.'' He briefly clutches his right ear, and you get the feeling that the tactical-channel is buzzing right now. ,,Still, according to our simulations, there is a 71 percent chance that we'll be able to retake deck 4 by force. However, this would require us to commit all available military personel. Unfortunately, we estimate a 97 percent casualty rate among the hostages.'' He frowns. ,,Personally, I think it may be preferable to wait until we learn more about the enemy. If we can get them to release as much as a single hostage, we might obtain priceless information. We could also attempt to restore power to the internal sensors or try to gas the place.'' He smiles apologetically. ,,I'm sorry sir, we're completely in the dark. If you choose to commit serious resources to an assault, you might also want to arm the rest of the crew.''

Re: Dystopia: The Fallen Angels

(Scott Avery)

You hit him squarely in the chest. The man staggers backwards, but does not lose his footing. Moving forward, you rapidly close the distance between yourself and the remaining two men. Before you can take any kind of action, one of them scores a lucky hit with his energy rifle. Your armor absorbes the blast, but the force of the impact throws you against the wall. Although your armor has probably taken some damage, your camouflage seems to hold. On your thermal display, you see another dozen people leave the Launchbay. At this distance, there is no way of telling if they're friend or foe.

Stunned and suffering from a number of second- and third-degree burn wounds, you finally drift into blissful unconsciousness. After an indeterminable amount of time, you awaken to find a young woman kneeling next to you. Even in the semi-dark, you can see her lips moving, but no sounds of any kind reach your ears for the first few seconds.
,,..still alive.'' A small medical flashlight briefly blinds you, but much to your dismay, you find it impossible to blink.
,,He's in bad shape'', she concludes, talking to someone outside your field of view. You can't hear the answer, but it obviously isn't to her liking. ,,Dead hostages are of no use to us.'', she snaps, then turns and softly slaps you in the face. ,,Can you hear me?'', she asks. ,,Don't worry, the effects of the blast should wear off any moment.''

Nonchalantly smiling back at Jorg, "Jorg, it doesnt look good down there, I took two down before I hopped in the shaft, thought about hitting engineering but I didnt want a dead end if you get my drift. I am glad to see friendly faces. Thanks for the Comm, I'll get to it..
Avery to command, Sir's, we have cyborgs and humaniods all over deck four, I couldnt get an accurate number but at least ten were headed in my direction by the elevator shaft, they arearmed and armoured. I stunned two, one more then likely normal with no armor, he was giving commands, then next it took three shots to drop, the third I hit once with no effect and thats when reinforcments came down the hall...Over...

Wolf glanced at the woman above him. He couldn't really make up his mind whether she was expecting an answer from him or not, and wishing to remain prudent, he chose to remain silent.

He glanced around, trying to take in as much of his surroundings as he could, should he need the knowledge in the coming minutes.

Re: Dystopia: The Fallen Angels

The woman injects you with an unknown substance. For a brief moment, black turns to purple, then the world goes back to black. ,,Stranger, you've witnessed our resolve. Go to your captain. Tell him that unless he meets our... more than reasonable demands, people are going to die'', she says. Her face is illuminated only by the sparsely placed crimson emergency-lighting, and she looks more like an apparitionthan a scientist. For a moment, you wonder if you're actually awake. Perhaps this entire conversation is merely a fictional product of your drugged mind. Suddenly, you are lifted to your feet and pushed towards the elevator. Much to your surprise, your legs manage to support your body. Whatever drug she administered to you, it obviously works. Still, the woman seems to insist on half dragging, half carrying you to the elevator. Occasionally looking over her shoulder. ,,Give this to your captain'', she whispers as she hands you a metallic item. Then, she steps back and vanishes into the darkness.
You are standing in the elevator, but realise that the manual-control has been deactivated. The lift can only be controlled from Tactical and the Bridge. Hopefully, they'll spot you on the camera and bring you in. Unless, of course, this is all a part of some kind of elaborate trap.

-----------------------------------------

(Scott Avery)

,,Hey Avery, what do you make of this?'', the sergeant asks, pointing towards one of the viewscreens. You turn away from the weapons locker and walk towards him. The screen is filled with camera footage from several decks, including the only cam that is still active on deck 4: the one in the elevator. For some reason, whoever has boarded the ship has chosen not to disable it. Despite the lack of lighting, you immediately identify the man that is now staggering into the elevator as doctor Wolf.

The lights in the elevator flicker briefly and the doors begin to close. In the darkness beyond the elevator, you see shades moving towards Engineering.

Re: Dystopia: The Fallen Angels

Philbert Sigismund Wolf

As soon as he noticed the doors closing, the muscles in Wolf's body tensed, readying themselves for what he was planning to do. He knew nothing of the metallic item he was supposed to give to the captain, but his suspicions were enough. The item could have been anything from a cylinder containing poisonous gas, to a bomb. He wasn't going to take anything like that with him to the captain.

As soon as he saw the doors to the elevator closing he threw the metallic item with all his might out of the doors closing shut.

Re: Dystopia: The Fallen Angels

(Philbert Sigismund Wolf)

You find that it takes more time for the doors to close then it takes for the lift to move up a level. Mere seconds after the elevator doors connect with a loud metallic clang, you find yourself facing half a dozen marines in full body armor.

,,He's clean'', confirms the first marine, after briefly scanning you with a handheld device. ,,You may step inside, doctor. Do you require medical care?''

Re: Dystopia: The Fallen Angels

Philbert Sigismund Wolf

"I probably do," the doctor said, "but it can wait. Whoever attacked us gave me some basic treatment down there."

Philbert stepped out of the elevator.

"The captain will probably want to hear from me, seeing as I was down there. I don't know how safe it is for me to approach him though. I was out for several minutes down there and I don't know whether they did something with me. They drugged me with at least one substance and I'm still trying to sort out my thoughts."

Wolf paused, bringing the palm of his hand to rest on his chin before suddenly withdrawing it as the sharp pain of burnt skin touching burnt skin jolted him back to the current situation.

"Someone down there, I can't really recall whom, told me to tell the captain that if demands weren't met, people would die."

Despite it having been less than a minute ago, drugs and injuries have pushed the memory far enough back for it to be a considerable effort to drag the recollections to the fore of his mind.

"I was also given some metallic object that I was supposed to give to Messman. Thought it could be bomb...or...threw it out closing..."

The rest of what the doctor had to say was lost in a jumble of incomprehensible words as Wolf's attention drifted away to far away thoughts. He could have still been standing, he could have been sliding to the floor, his mind had decided to not care about the signals the body kept sending.

The acting captain of the ship sat in silence, periodically mopping his brow with a greasy rag. It was his only visible act.
He had never planned radical decisions, looking for little more than a swift but responsible retirement at the earliest opportunity. Now a pack of leeches infested his ship, treacherous worms that they were. But Ricor wondered; did he care?
It was his team down there at engineering, but now matters grew more complicated he cared little for the fates of the rest of the crew. Vape them all, he thought. The rats and everyone around them. I was ready to welcome them, they spit in my face. Toss them all into the void, and a pity about the hostages.
But he said nothing, gave no direction. The oily cloth moved up again.

,,..aptain?’’, the voice drifts just outside of your hearing range, and for a few moments you are convinced that it is a product of your imagination. Suddenly, you notice the Tac-Liason standing in front of you – his lips moving. ,,Sir, are you alright?’’, he asks. Although he doesn’t look to be particulary worried. His face betrays that he is expecting the resolution to this crisis to be delivered through the barrel of a Cobra, rather than through any plan or diplomatic scheme the engineer-turned-captain might come up with. ,,Captain, maybe you should get some sleep?’’, he ventures carefully. Clearly worried that he might be out of line. ,,Sergeant Jörg sends his compliments, sir. He just pulled another survivor out of the elvator shaft. It’s doctor Wolf. Before he lost conciousness, he mentioned that the unknowns on deck four have threatend to use force against the hostages if their demands aren’t met. Which is nothing new. Wolf is wounded, but the CMO is seeing to his treatment personally.’’, he continues. ,,The sergeant will personally debrief Wolf and Avery in about an hour. Then, he’ll come up with a final plan of attack. The debriefing will take place on deck one, sir. You are, of course, expected.’’

Re: Dystopia: The Fallen Angels

,,Rise and shine, doctor’’, a familiar voice says. You open your eyes, and find that your retina is instantly attacked by the bright lights in the Medical Bay. You never realised that a sizable portion of the valuable backup power was used to ensure that the sickbay was illuminated as usual. Luckily, most of the overly bright light is almost immediately blocked out by the body of the CMO, who seems to hover above you. ,,Tough luck, old chap. Whatever treatment the intruders gave you triggered some kind of accute tissue-necrosis in your legs. I had to amputate’’, he says gleefully, while nodding towards the laser-scalp in his left hand.
You glare down your body, only to find both legs firmly in place. You suspect that if the CMO widens his grin any further, his teeth will fall out. ,,I’ve applied some tissue regeneration-patches to your burn wounds, you should be back on your feet in minutes’’, he says, before moving to the next patient.

Philbert was just about to mumble some thank yous to CMO Abraham when Corporal Avery walked in, saving him from saying what he had not really wanted to say.

With a sudden movement that made his still not fully healed wounds ache and stretch more than comfortably, Philbert sat up.

"I'm ready to be debriefed Corporal."

His mind wasn't yet fully cleared, but he knew that time was of the essence.

"The sooner the captain gets the information-" he paused as he tentatively swung his legs from the bed and put them on the ground, gently placing weight on them, wincing as the pain hit, but then following up with even more pressure. "-the better."

"The stretcher will not be necessary." Wolf grabbed a medical coat and a pair of operating trousers from a nearby hanger so as to seem halfway decent and not naked when appearing in the briefing room. Pulling them over his wounded body wasn't as painful as he had expected, but still hurt like hell.

"Let's go," he said walking towards the door, wincing less with each footstep as he got used to the constant pain.

Re: Dystopia: The Fallen Angels

(Scott Avery and Philbert Sigismund Wolf)

The executive briefing room is surprisingly empty. You find only three people sitting at the head of the long table. You both recognize the first person as Sergeant Jorg, who has traded his battle armor for his regular uniform. Without it, he looks considerably shorter. The other two persons, both middle aged males, look only vaguely familair. But they appear to be senior officers from the Operations and Engineering departments.
,,Please be seated'', Jorg says. ,,We're still waiting for the captain, so feel free to help yourself to some synthesized coffee.''

Jack Johnson cowers in the pleasant glow of the monitors surrounding his station, occasionally stealing glances at the darkness that seemed to encroach on him from all sides. The sparse emergency lights seem to do little to arrest the growing blackness. Jack has never been a regular at the temple of logic and reason, and has little trouble convincing himself that the void is in fact seeping through the hull. A solid, sentient predator that is sneaking up on him.
When the lights turn back on, his heart skips a beat. The Tech-Liason is the first to state the obvious. ,,Main power is back online.''
