Yeah we use ergometers. We even won an ergometer competition (6 kilometres), which was pretty hard, because we had to start over due to technical malfunction. Eventually we had 'rowed' almost 9 kilometres, with an average (/500 m) of 1.54, which is pretty decent, IMHO.

I row in the leight weigth eight, which means that I am allowed to have a maximum weight of 72.5 kilograms, with a team average of 70 kilograms. The boat looks somewhat like this (use your imagination ;) ):

bow
/\

front (dunno technical English term)

Hope this works out, cos I'm not too sure about it The horizontal lines are the oars, of course, and as you can see there are eight of them. I usually sit on place number 6 (counting starts at the front).

I used to race two man canoe's in the Boy Scout's. My troop was number 1 in the state :D There is nothing better the going through a back water swamp filled with alligator's and haveing to hop out of the canoe to pull it over a fallen tree in the water and sinking into the muck. Was rahter pleasent :D Nowadays I'm lucky if I get to go to the beach for a swim. :(

Rowing? Cool! I knew some people who got up at unbelievably early times of the day to do that! :D How often do you have to go to practice for something like that?

No worries, I'm not in a lightning sort of mood today. ;) Have to go get some work done, though.

Thanks for the diagram.
You've got one of those long boats, I don't know the name either, the Calpe doesn't use them but I've seen them in action.

Do you have any Ergo rac times so that we can compare?

The only ones I can recall exaclty are

2KM-7 minutes 14 seconds (average 1:51)
15KM-1 hour and 5 seconds(Average 2:03)

I'm one of the lightest rowers in the club at 60kg, in contrast the heaviest is 95KG :D (I also happen to be his double partner which has earned us the nickname of little and large :D )

Weight isn't a factor in doubles and sculls thankfully, otherwise we might be in trouble :D

I practice five times a week (Monday,Wednesday, Friday, twice on Saturday, Twice on Sunday), as for gettting up unbelievably early well the time we usually start our session is at 8am, when we're training in Spain it usually drops to 7 though much to the delight of everyone involved.

It's tough but its fun IMO :D

Annatar 02-11-2003 01:58 PM

is it just me.... or is it really not-crowed over here...? hmmm I'll be back soon and I sure hope for you all that there is a heaten up discussion going on when I return :D ..

Attalus 02-11-2003 02:03 PM

Good afternoon, all. A most pleasant day, here, sunny and mild. 61 degrees Fahrenheit, just a breeze. Was busy this morning, and looks like this afternoon, too. Got Galadria's combination Valentine's Day/Anniversary present. Good day, daughter, hope life is treating you well.

wellard 02-11-2003 02:22 PM

morning cobbers

woke up rudely by tilers smashing tiles yesterday. This morning it's my precious little boy "I can't sleep" *takes a minute to decide throttle him or cuddle him* So here I am back in the cafe.

Wow it only seems like I was here a few hours ago.

Attalus 02-11-2003 02:32 PM

Afternoon, Wellard. My 4 year old son woke us up this morning, also, claiming bad dreams. Then, he went back to sleep in our bed and then slept until noon. But, now, he is in a relly good mood, so I shouldn't complain, I guess.

Reeka 02-11-2003 02:52 PM

I am blatently making this post to see if my avatar will change.

wellard 02-11-2003 02:55 PM

g'day attalus

yeah my kid blames bad dreams for waking up sometimes. how can children that age have bad dreams? when their days are just filled with fun and love?

Attalus 02-11-2003 02:58 PM

Hi, there, Reeka, drop by any time, and bring your sig with you. Congrats on being Egyptian.

Wellard, I suspect some of Will's bad dreams stem from the fact that he has seen every Star Wars movie 11,234 times. ;)

Elif Godson 02-11-2003 03:02 PM

Goodness Attalus, is that all the boy does is watch Star Wars :D If you add it up I'll wager he has watched at least every wakeing moment of hi slife, I would have nightmare's too :D hehehe

wellard 02-11-2003 03:08 PM

My boy got a thing about watching Thomas the tank engine movie (magic railroad) mind you he's not watched it 11,000 times yet :D

Cloudbringer 02-11-2003 03:09 PM

Sigmar, you have WAY more endurance and energy than I do if that's your schedule! I have alot of respect for people who can do things like rowing. Do you compete with other places or is all intramural?

LOL, Hi Reeka! You are now a jackal headed god of the underworld! WHOOHOOO! I remember when Z first made that one, I was a lucky owner of it ...couldn't wait to get the Jackal head off! LOLOL :D Then other people got the Goddess of something or other..much nicer! LOL Anyway, congrats!

We do compete with other places. We enter the British nationals on a regular basis and we also attend the Rowing world championship whenever possible (not myself obviously, only the higher tier members in the world championship).

This year a number of us are going to Munich but I'm training towrds the Nationals in Scotland. I'm not going to lie, I am at a disadvantage due to the fact that I'm fairly short for a rower (6 feet) but I do make up for it in terms of strength and stamina but in a sport like rowing the height really makes a differance. One stroke from your standard 6 foot 6 lads gets an extra 50 cm on each of my strokes :D

The Calpe Rowing Club usually does well but the only medal I've ever walked away with is the Silver medal in the quad championship race, which compared to the rest of the guys here isn't much :D But hey, I'm only little

I'll never go pro but I'm hoping it'll look nice on my application form to get into Uni :D It's fun, too you should give a try.

Kaltia 02-11-2003 03:22 PM

Yeah, well, I picked up swimming as a sport. I'm stick thin but BOY am I outta shape!
Swimming's a good cardio-vascular sport, like sex, ain't it? :D :D :P

The best of all the sports in terms of physical health I believe...swimming that is, sex is more of a hobby :D

I used to swim but the schedule was way too strict, even compared to the rowing. Besides it was as tiring as hell, I could barely doggy paddle to the side of the pool after the end of each session!

Plus during summber swimming at the beach seemed a lot more appealing then swimming a a physical activity :D

I suppose gettting the chance to swim in a place like England without freezing is a lot better though!
You've got a point I suppose...it be a pretty wierd site though :D

As for beaches in the UK well the only one I went to is the one near St Andrews, the actual beach and weather was nice but the water was FREEZING, I swear I've done the polar bear swim in Gibraltar and it was no where near as cold as the water at that beach.

What about Blackpool anyhow?

Kaltia 02-11-2003 04:01 PM

Never been to Blackpool. Never wanted to. Britain's beaches are awful, let's be honest.

Sigmar 02-11-2003 04:04 PM

Well I've gotta go and finish my R.E coursework. Adios all!

Horatio 02-11-2003 04:05 PM

Cafe ahoy, prepare to make landfall! Arrr.......

Look, I have a parrot on my shoulder. It may be dead, it may be stuffed, but it is a parrot nonetheless :D ARR!!!!

Anyway, I've just got back from track for the first time since I got my sponsorship and was hoping to keep quiet about it (I hate people fussing around me and getting in my way :D ) but my flatmate and some friends turned up half-way through the training session and blurted it out. Poor me, I had to endure half an hour of back-patting :D

Kaltia 02-11-2003 04:09 PM

Awwww, *virtually thumps Horatio on back*
*HARD for his remark about her pun*
So whose the sponsor? Dell Boy's Adult Entertainment Videos LTD?
