True. Although I do care about it.

No kidding, they're only one step away from being classified as a cult or a sect... The images of those people rioting at the Binnenhof is by far the most horrible and frightening thing I've seen since the WTC attack... :( </font>
i wouldn't worry about them too much, those are hooligans from ado den haag, people with no political interrest whatsoever. they are just a group of sharks, when there's blood in the water......

i've heard they will prob move it to another date

Melusine 05-06-2002 05:22 PM

I hope yu're right, Johnny :(
I hear lots of people crying about security right now... yeah right, that's easy to say with hindsight
How immature to feel the urge to point the blame, to accuse others of an event which could not have been prevented.

Lord Shield 05-07-2002 02:58 AM

Quite so. Even if Pim accepted the security offered, a determined gunman would still haev found some way to get to him

I have to admit I didn't have the feeling of unsafety when Fortuyn was shot. I did however have that feelings when those morons started to riot... :(

What's beyond me is that someone like Saddam Hussein (possibly one of the most dubious/questionable men alive) can be allowed to roam the streets in complete safety, yet Pim Fortuyn (who is not in the same league) gets a bullet through the head for simply standing by his beliefs and daring to speak up about them.

Different circumstances, Arledrian. If Saddam just walked around on the streets he would have been shot ages ago. And I don't think Saddam ever goes out without a large group of watch dogs and other bodyguards...

Well yes, it was more a figure of speech. But I've just wondered how he's managed to get away with it for so long.

Yeah, he didn't deserve to be shot, they could have just let things run.. he was only predicted about 15% anyway, less then Le Pen got.
The situation is totally different in Holland. With proportional representation allowing many parties to win seats the 15% that Fortuyn's party would have likely held the balance of power in the Dutch Parliament. He would have been part of the Government.

the populace would much rather have HIM than kowtow to heathen Westerners. Nasty or not, he is still theirs

Besides, who's to say any replacement would be better? Better the devil you know than the devil you don't

Memnoch 05-07-2002 07:23 AM

I'm not to close to all this in OZ, but it did make the news - apparently Fortuyn would have been a "kingmaker" of sorts had his party won the number of seats as was expected, as he would have held a lot of leverage - for better or worse.

Irrespective of whether or not you agree with a politician's views, I don't believe it is acceptable to resort to (or support the use of) violence to sway public opinion, ESPECIALLY if they are abiding by a democratic process. (Even though Abraham Lincoln originally advocated it, all those years ago. ;) )

In closing, I'm glad you sorted out your differences in this thread all by yourselves, without need for any outside interference. I'm proud of you all!

by striking fear into the hearts of any possible oponents. It's quite simple really, stand up against saddam and you die.

I don't know too much about Fortuyn, except that he was right-wing. However, calling him a Nazi is going overboard, unless he literally wanted to "cleanse" the Earth the way Hitler tried to...

It is unfortunate that he was killed, no politician deserves that. The way to defeat politicians is not by gunshots, but by the voting booth.
</font>
Very well said Alexander.. Talthyr, what you said about Pim Fortuyn being a nazi was way passed the line  . I don't agree with Pim's idea's, but if one supports the right wing, and is a nazi according to you, then there are a lot of nazi's on this world.
