Baldur’s Gate II: Throne of Bhaal E3 Progress Report

BLACK ISLE Studios and Bioware sent the Adrenaline Vault a progress report on the development of their expansion to the award-winning Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. Titled Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal, the add-on expands the game with new locations, high-level spells and powerful new characters. Set in the Forgotten Realms campaign world of Dungeons & Dragons, Throne of Bhaal is the conclusion of the Baldur's Gate legend as gamers fulfill their fate as the child of Bhaal. Characters can reach up to level 40, made possible with a raised experience cap of eight million points, the highest level in an Advanced Dungeons & Dragons computer game. Also included in the quest are over 40 new high-level spells and abilities. The Character Kit will also be furnished, allowing gamers to create a powerful new character able to cast spells with unpredictable results. Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal is due to ship this summer; gamers will need to own the original Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. Here is the Adrenaline Vault update, direct from the computer of Doug Avery, associate producer:

We have just finished putting in all of our final audio. Audio was the last thing we were waiting for so now we are content complete and can hammer away at the bug list. Since we have all of the new content in the game we are just about finished. We also have most of the European text back from the translators so our foreign versions are coming along great as well. At E3 we will be showing some of the new areas--which will include a tour of Watchers Keep. We will also be showing off some of our new spell effects and high level abilities. The continuation of the story will be our primary focal point. We will not give away the ending but will be showing off the city of Saradush. The Pocket Plane--a sanctuary for the player that is located in the Abyss--will also be on display.

Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal will complete the story that Bioware started in Baldur's Gate. This closure is what TOB will add from a creative standpoint to the epic story. It will also showcase some very impressive spell effects that all Dungeons & Dragons fans will appreciate. It also allows you to pick up a new NPC that fans of the series will recall as a nemesis in the original game. From a technical standpoint TOB adds the ability to have a non-pausing map so that players can watch their party move from the map screen. This makes long journeys much easier to moderate. TOB also features improved multiplayer support. We have also added many new areas that are beautiful to behond. The art team at Bioware did a fantastic job putting them together.

What's it about?
Since it ends the Bhaal saga, the expansion pack,
fittingly enough, resolves the problem of who claims
the throne.
There are only 5 Bhaal-spawn left,
one of them being a very powerful
fire giant who has an army of his
kin besieging the city of Saradesh.
To make the locale feel alive, the
development team has gone to great
lengths to give Saradesh the feel of
a city under siege. Archers fight
along the walls and get replaced as
they fall to their enemies. Flaming
catapult shots fly over the walls and
strike at the citizens, while the
citizens complain about hunger, even to
the point of striking at refugees from
outside the town, whom they see as
competitors for the scarce food supplies.

Among the many new enemies you will face
is Demogorgon - Prince of Demons.
He's a perennial favorite supervillain since
1st Edition and is the most powerful of the
demon princes. To give everyone an idea how
powerful he is, BioWare threw up an encounter
between him and a 30th level party. It lasted
one, maybe two rounds. The party wasn't
completely prepared for combat, but they
were extensively equipped and would be hardly
pressed to take on regular demons, even Balors.

Release Date: "soon"
Single/Multiplayer RPG
Singleplayer hours of play: 40-50

There are 12 areas on the new map (Tethyr)
which contain 80 areas (towns, dungeons,
countryside, buildings, etc.), 100 new
magic items and weapons, 43 new abilities,
several new thief traps, and many high level
spells added bringing the total up to 325
spells. With the new experience cap of 8
million, it is now possible to reach level
40. New spells include: Storm of Vengeance,
Bigby's Crushing Hand and Globe of Blades
(not for the weak of heart, little bits of orc
flying in every direction isn't a pretty sight,
at least not for the orcs http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif. New monsters:
Solars, Planetars, Magic Golems, Hive Mothers,
Red Abishai, Fire Giants, Blue Dragons,
and Purple Dragons.
I am sure there will also
be several unique creatures to fight,
since the main story has to do with 5 of your
brothers and sisters (Bhaal spawn) raging
across the countryside. One of the special
items that can be found in the game is Lum
the Mad's Machine, which is packed with
surprises (some fun, some deadly).
One of the new areas is a castle under
siege, where the walls are lined with archers
who are keeping invading forces out and you
will want to keep your eyes open for the
flaming pitch being lobbed into the castle.
To make the final part of Balder's Gate
special and challenging, one of the toughest
creatures to be found in D&D has been added
to the game: Demogorgon. During the presentation,
when party of 30th level characters attacked
Demogorgon, they were all slaughtered in
seconds, most of them not even making it into
melee range.

Gone gold.com had it listed with a 5/31/01 release date and they moved it to 6/1/01 over the weekend. They are calling that date "solid". So...looks like another couple of weeks...if you're an optomist. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

The two quests conclude with two wicked boss fights. I am not allowed to give away what you'll be fighting, but if you're a long-time D&D gamer, you will be fighting two things you'll recognize, and you'll probably have to wash out your mouth with soap when you see them. You probably sat and read the handbooks describing these things and thought "I hope I never meet that" or "I'm going to drop that into my next campaign and watch my players wet themselves."

Why do you have to wait for an official release date in England?
Why don't you have someone mail it to you from here, if it is gonna take so long???
I mean, I understand the need to wait if you are non-english speaking, but it seems that most of you here do not have that problem.
