Have you every tried it, Rusty??

I love sushi! :D

jsalsb 12-03-2004 07:59 AM

Rusty: As I was telling Bungleau, although I was born and lived virtually all my life here in Montreal, my French is atrocious (by local standards). I guess that I would pass for a french speaker anywhere that didn't actually speak french - like in the rest of Canada, for example.

And as for sushi... YUM! Eyeballs notwithstanding, Sushi is about my favourite thing to eat. If you've never had it, you can ease yourself into it; it's not all raw fish. There's some cooked fish and seafood, some vegetable sushi, and even some meats. Sushi (maki, sashimi and the like) is more of a food preparation (and eating) style than an actual dish. It can vary as far as the chef's imagination.

I'm guessing you don't get much fresh fish there anyhow, what with Zimbabwe being land locked and all?

PS there aren't really any eyeballs in sushi. Well, there could be. He he...

bsftcs 12-03-2004 10:24 AM

And a round on the assistant barkeeper as well to celebrate that my almost endless wandering in the quintessonian desert is over.

As I have previously mentioned, being promoted to the Evil One himself is NOT my idea of a promotion , but here is a round on me anyway.

jsalsb 12-03-2004 10:53 AM

You timed that one out quite nicely! Congratulations on your new exalted position of ultimate evil! I'll drink to that! Just watch where you poke that sceptre thingy there.

Rusty Shackleford 12-03-2004 11:18 AM

i never actualy tried sushi but raw fish dosent sound too apealing .

here in zimbabwe, lots of people speak french (french is my first language) and its kinda rare to see someone who can speaks english and french good here(i think i can ).

and by the way, i met a canadian online and french is his first language and he lives in New-Brunswick or something, he says lots of people speak french there so i guess you were wrong about saying that the rest of canada dint speak french

(by the way, sorry about not using quotes, i got a bad experience with them and it pissed me off and i stopped trying )

Rusty Shackleford 12-03-2004 11:19 AM

holy cr*ap, lots of " ", i dint notice, lol, sry

jsalsb 12-03-2004 01:25 PM

smilies are good!

I didn't mean to say that nobody speaks french in the rest of Canada, just that Quebec (where Montreal is) is predominantly french, and the rest of canada is predominantly engish speaking. But provinces such as Manitoba and New Brunswick, and parts of Nova Scotia, have sizable french speaking populations. Although all together, the non-Quebec french population is probably under 1 million people. There are about 6 million french speakers in Quebec by itself (and about 1 million english speakers too).

Bungleau 12-03-2004 04:46 PM

I have cousins in Montreal, and since I speak French rather passably well, I enjoy it out there. At least, until people drop into local patois that leaves me in the dust :D I guess you could say I speak more Parisian French than French-Canadian French.

And on the topic of French speakers in Quebec, my experience is that the further away from town you go, the further away from English you go. Makes it quite exciting, really

As for sushi... It's good, but it depends on where you get it. I love it in places with local seafood and a large asian population. I'm really careful when I get to someplace landlocked (like, say, Michigan) with few people of Asian descent (like, say, Michigan).

Nothing racist is intended or implied, but in a place where more people are likely to eat a food, the food of that type is likely to be much better. For the same reason, any steak served at Red Lobster is likely to be pretty pathetic, by steak-lover standards.

Likewise, seafood at the local bar is like to consist of fried mystery fish.

LOL @ aleph_null1: Today, I shall... :D

Now, all that being said... who's up for a drink? We've got stout ale, Nighon wine imported from Erathia, Boogre Brew, Blood of the Lily, doux de montagne, and a host of other concoctions. Go ahead... try to stump the bartender! Bsftcs will gladly step up to all challenges :D

We've got a very nice mini sushi bar in our local Krogers (a grocery store for those who might not know) of all places! Not a huge selection but what they make is great! Haven't had one from them yet that I didn't thoroughly enjoy!

And Michigan is surrounded with water - so how can Michigan be "landlocked"??? hmmmm Granted those are fresh water lakes and most of the sushi with which I am familiar contains salt water ingredients but I bet you can make good sushi from fresh water ingredients too! :D

jsalsb 12-03-2004 05:02 PM

I hear the current fashionable drink at Enchanted Sea resorts is a racy little number called "death on the beach."

sushi - There are hundreds of sushi joints in Montreal. 1% are really good. But I spent a week in Vancouver on business earlier this year and, true to Bungeau's formula about quality = proximity to H20, the worst sushi in Vancouver is better than the best sushi in Montreal! and cheaper!!

Here's something to worry about, especially for those in Michigan who may contemplate a trip over the border into Ontario. Starting Jan 1 2005, a law instigated by Ontario Public Heath will force all sushi restaurants to freeze their fish for at least 12 hours prior to serving. This is, ostensibly, to kill a parasite that can grow in raw fish meat - one that has never been observed in Ontario, and the medical condition which it causes has never presented in the province either! Needless to say, the entire province's sushi lovers are up in arms. Anyone who loves sushi knows there's a world of difference between fresh and frozen fish. Hope this isn't a trend that will spread elsewhere!

Bungleau 12-03-2004 06:54 PM

Hmmm... one of my cousins in Montreal has a husband named Jon.... or perhaps John. You don't sing and play acoustic guitar, do you?

And Wyv, while we're not landlocked, that doesn't mean we know sushi! As a confirmed midwestern boy (where a cow's place is on the table), all that fishy stuff is usually beyond me. So I'm pickier than most when it comes to sushi, although I've had it twice in the past year (once in San Jose, and once in St. Petersburg, FL). Both times it was excellent. I can't remember the last time I had sushi in Michigan... perhaps it's better than I fear :D

Wyvern 12-03-2004 07:18 PM

Really it all comes down to the chef making the sushi! A good sushi chef is not going to compromise on the ingredients and with sushi, you really can't! lol!!

I like the Tuna, Shrimp, California Rolls and Dragon Rolls sushis that's available down at Kroger - she has some others she makes too but I haven't tried them yet.

And a round of drinks for everyone!!
The board has been very active lately and we've had the pleasure of some new posters adding a lot to the board - they're a welcome addition so cause to celebrate! :D

I'll even let Red celebrate too!

I do. Badly, but I do. This is starting to get too weird! But I just asked Diane (my wife) if any of her Michigan family is the same age as me (which I believe you are, 38?), and she said no. Her cousins are at least in their 40's and their kids are in their 20's. So, unless we have some more non-identifying characteristics to trade, our secret identities are safe for now! (unless we visit each other's websites, hmmmmm...)

Now back to our regular topic already in progress:

While in Vancouver, I had the most awesome maki roll I've ever tasted. The chef called it the Crunchy-Munchy Roll. It was a shrimp tempura roll, but instead of nori paper on the outside, it was wrapped in a barber-shop-pole-pattern of smoked eel and avocado. Much too yummy for words. Head banging good! I actually stooped and pounded my head on the bar, it was that good!

I think we may have to exit the Boogre Bar and start a new thread called the Sushi Bar, so as not to alienate or annoy the rest of the clientele.

Bungleau 12-03-2004 11:46 PM

Whew! I was starting to get nervous, because I can't remember if the Jo(h)n I'm thinking of is married to my cousin Katherine or Anne-Caroline. I think it's Katherine...

Hmmm... a sushi bar... good idea, but the rest of my family won't accompany me. They haven't had the chance to try it... yet...

When I was at the sushi place in Florida, I went in as an admitted novice, got suggestions from everyone else, and had a crunch roll (that I remember) and something else (that I don't). Man, was lunch good (and filling!). Glad it was on the company's dime... :D

Okay, Torin can set up a sushi shop in the corner. Just make sure there's good ventilation for the "kitchen" area, and none of that freezing-for-twelve-hours stuff. We only want the finest in here... :D

Rusty Shackleford 12-05-2004 06:39 PM

Congrats, Rusty! It's a useful tool and especially useful when there have been several replies between the one to which you wish to respond and your post.

That's definitely the way to do it. Realize that you're an idiot, and adapt!

Go into a bar, and ask the barkeep to give you his favorite drink. Find the crazy back-corner ethnic restaurant and have the waitress bring you her favorite dish.

There's no better way to find the good stuff than asking those who know ...

jsalsb 12-06-2004 04:14 PM

my favourite is to go into any restaurant in Chinatown and order stuff from the part of the menu that has no english translation! That's what originally led me to Chinese hot pot.

jsalsb 12-06-2004 04:16 PM

and while we're celebrating: 300 = Zhentarim Guard = boogre brew for all!

Congrats!! :D
and a second round on me! ;)

jsalsb 12-06-2004 08:24 PM

And only 6197 more posts till Dracolisk, my personal favorite! (A man can dream, can't he?) I guess I can hang around the general discussion board and get into some heated debates over the pros and cons of smoking. That should eat up a few hundred by thursday

So So 12-06-2004 09:11 PM

Hum... cons?... sigh I guess maybe that's just because I am a smoker...

wait jsalsb?... hot pot?... would you happen to have what it sounds like?... I'm Chinese and curious what dish you are refering to...

ah yes... a round of brew for me... and a round on me for the newly promoted!

Bungleau 12-06-2004 10:23 PM

I can attest that GD is a great way to get your post count up Willow and I were close until she went to GD. When she doubled her count, I went to see what was happening. And my time in Emerald Dragon Hell was not related, honest!

Soon after, I saw my posting rates go up dramatically. You can do the same thing in Current Events, but that forum tends to be somewhat dangerous... :(

*slaps forehead* I'm forgetting my manners... Brew for So So, brew for jsalsb, one for Wyvern too... Stout ale for me...

And if you guys are going to bring in more food, I'd like you to add some steamboat, like I had in Singapore. What a way to eat your dinner... :D beats that mongolian grill stuff, hands down.

aleph_null1 12-07-2004 01:25 AM

Why not, a Boogre Brew for the cardinality here!

It was $2 20 oz. drafts at Riordan's tonight, from 6:30pm until close. Great times, brought the girls out and only spent $22 for myself! (22 / 2 == 11 * 20 == 220 oz / 12 == 18 normal beers. Not bad!

More cheers, more beers! (or Boogre Brews ... )

Bungleau 12-07-2004 09:34 AM

One more for the cardinality...

Good night of gaming last night. The new party, consisting of Whiskers the whiskaz barbarian, Miss Mayhem the human warrior, Bloodrunt the rattling barbarian, Twinkletoes the Oomphaz priest, L'yessa the elven mage, and Spunky the pixie mage was quite active. They're exploring the crypt and doing the Rumphy on a regular basis

Noted that the XP bonus for elves really does work... L'yessa gets a ten percent bonus on XP, which has let her level up more quickly than Spunky.

Everyone's now in the wizards' guild as well, so we've also got the Scabban quest. One step at a time... :D

No gaming tonight because I've got to go over to Chicago (again ). Tomorrow night, when I'm back... The swords will flash, the staves will thump, and the blood will flow upon the soil of the Gael Serran...

Hi So So, By "hot pot" I mean the thing with the boiling broth in the middle of the table and you dunk all your meat, veggis, noodles, fish balls, etc. I think its known in the non-Asian world as Chinese Fondu?

The restaurant down the street from my house has a great hot pot buffet during the winter months. aAll you can dunk for $14! And great sauses - which make the whole thing!

Bungleau: good luck with the new party. Twinkletoes the Oomphaz priest! LOL!

Bungleau 12-07-2004 11:52 AM

Thanks Hot Pot sounds like the same thing as steamboat -- quite yummy, I must say :D

I confess to being more ironic than original in my character naming. My whiskaz characters have been Stripes, Lady Tigra, Whiskers, and perhaps one more. I had Miss Piggy (gourkh), and I can't think of any other names right now. Other than Stumblebum, my perpetual dwarf, and Morris, my perpetual monk, that is. And Studley Dinsmore, the Paladin... Bungleau, who's always a rogue... Scales and ssslither, both Lizzords...

Such great fun

jsalsb 12-07-2004 02:22 PM

Every game I've played over the last 10 years or so has included a pair of plain (*vanilla*) fighters, one of which is a human named Bjorn, and another is a Lizardman (actual race-name depends on the game) named Fjorn. Because they always tend to have very similar stats, and always gain exactly the same amount of experience points, I generally refer to them as the twins.

So So 12-07-2004 02:42 PM

Oh.... I love that... hot pot is the best during the winter... after you walk in from the cold wintery weather... you get a order of hot pot.... ahhh.... Barkeep!!!.... we should have hot pot here!... haha

So So 12-07-2004 07:53 PM

Oh.... def like a sauna.... not only is it good for sinuses... it's also great for the tummy!... it seems I have a fellow hot pot lover... a round on me.... and we should bring in a few empty pots raided from Shuregeon Castle to start a hot pot here in the bar!... hahaz...

jsalsb 12-07-2004 08:24 PM

jsalsb 12-08-2004 01:13 PM
