In that case: Communism = :( for the people. Capitalism = :( for the planet.

Okay, seriously people, whether a country is Communist has nothing to do with what it says, or what anyone else says, but everything to do with what it does.

Can anyone give me a good example of China's policies actually being Communist? And not USSR Communist(Since that's not Communism.), but Marx Communist. I know I can give you plenty of examples of how their policies look more like the US than a Marxist hippie collective. And I do not think anyone here is going to call the US Communist, are they?

Communism, real Communism, would actually be great for the people. Real Communism is basically that everyone gives it all they've got, and in return, they have all their needs covered. Education, health, food and entertainment. And that would probably involve a clean enviroment, too, people need fresh air to breathe, they need plants, they need clean water.

But that is not the subject of this thread, so ignore it. Just tell me how China's policies are more Communist than they are Capitalist or generally Dictatorial with a semi-Planned Economy(Entirely possible without being Communist.), then I'll surrender.

Actually, most of the self-proclaimed Communist regimes aren't too hot on protecting the environment either.

I do not know about North Korea's pollution specifically, but nuclear tests rarely benefit anything but the rare, three-headed monkey and psychic clams.

Cuba? I know even less there, and to the best of my knowledge, those three countries are the only ones officially labelling themselves as Communist or something close to it. I know there's a large Maoist movement in... Tibet, is it? Somewhere around there, anyway, who've got a hand in the government now, but I do not believe the country in general is anything near Communist.

</font>[/QUOTE]It is expected that the cost of the massive environmental problems they've created will significantly slow down the growth of the Chinese economy in the future. And while I don't have any dirt on Cuba, the (former) Soviet Union was definitely one of the worst polluters in the history of Man.

PurpleXVI 03-24-2007 07:50 AM

That seems pretty likely, eventually it will either damage their workforce or their ability to produce food. Which will then further cost them since they'll have to start expending resources on cleanup.

Currently I do not know much about how bad Russia is at polluting, but I do know that up in Kamchatka, some distance inland from Vladivostok, they're treating their salmon population in a very unsustainable way. Not exactly pollution, but still ecologically damaging.

I do not have figures on the USSR's pollution either, but if we count Chernobyl as pollution/enviromental damage caused by the USSR, then it'd be hard for them not to be near the top.

Seeing as Cuba is pretty much fuelling it's economy with tourism, I'd say that they probably try to keep the environment clean when they can.
