Try again, thank you for playing.

The nVidia GeForce 7800GTX sli-capable video card is currently top-dog, the ATI cards don't even come remotely close. With ATI's delay on introducing both the crossfire technology and the 1000-series cards, they are seriously lagging the market right now.
[/QUOTE]Just to back that up, this is completely correct. And the 1800XT isn't ahead of the 7800GTX by any means in todays games, except in HDR techonology. I don't know where you got #2 and #3 from though, as considering the 1800XT isn't even for sale yet, what would you have as a second and third, presuming you had that first?

I'm running 64 bit Suse v10 and MCE dual boot on an nforce4 based system (not dual core yet) and while Linux is nice, it's not going to be replacing M$ any time soon. Open Office is an impressive package (and DEFINITELY a winner over the bloated and expensive MSOffice for the majority of uses), but Linux is a PITA to set up, buggy as hell (half the apps that installed with Suse simply don't work), and not yet user friendly enough for the average desktop.

I've been trying to get sound working... all I need to do is enable S/PDIF out but do you think there's any help on that ANYWHERE either in the help system or online... NO. There's a dozen different mixer and volume control apps installed but NOT ONE of them has an S/PDIF selecter.

There doesn't appear to be any user interface standards... every developer rolls his own. Now as a developer I have to admit to being guilty of that on occasion, but as a user I can tell you... it's a PITA.

Then when you get online you find that half of the things you used to do easily are hard to not possible under linux.

Want to run the XMRadio net app... fuhgetaboutit.

Yahoo music... bzzzt, denied.

Atomfilms... MAYBE... if you can get real networks linux version to run.

All those slick autoinstallers that just pop in plugins automatically when you're running windows? Well they MAY work (flash) or they may not (Quicktime) in Linux.

And when you do download something to install, you best be comfortable with the terminal window because you'll be sh'ing and ls'ing around for a while to make the package even installable.

Using a non-standard display resolution (like my HD projector) and you get to manually edit conf files to get it to work, THEN the screen setup app stops running.

The new boot utility in Suse is sweet, and the system as a damn sight more polished than Linux was even a year ago... but there's still a lot of work to do.

Then there's Gaming and Home Theater... while Wintel boxes have the markets by the short hairs, Linux is in its infancy in both areas. Of course since I can't get the blasted sound working, I have not even tried to find alternatives to Theatertek/ffdshow yet, or My Movies (automatically databases, loads, and plays ISO DVD Images.) Now admittedly I have not dedicated a ton of time to it... hard to do so when all I have to do is boot to MCE and all that stuff just works.

Sounds to me like you are having some severe difficulities. Have you tried a different build?
SUSE, is a deep OS, and not as mainstreamed as the Debian "For Public Use" seem to be.

I have used three different flavors of Debian, and have experienced none of the issues you mention. Could it be, you need the 386 OS as opposed to the 64 bit?

sudo dpkg -i
apt-get

Does SUSE use the synaptic utility?

You are correct, Linux is not for the weak! But man, it sure can rock when it's hot!

Yes, definately over-rated. A couple of things to note about that link there mate, firstly, the "top 2" cards are actually the very same card, just different brands. Second, the X800XT certainly isn't the next in line, and thirdly, this article is dated July 05, and there have been a few mammoth changes since then. *points to 7800GTX* ;)
