Sure you're not thinking of Kaikoura, Donut? Snow-capped mountains literally go all the way down to the waves there. Timaru is a bit of a dump really. No culture (bar white trash), and not much in the way of scenery.

I'd love to live in Ireland. I've already been there for a few months and it was quite good. And I don't mind that much rain anyway.
