I'm so sick to death of having to take a shower or get some lunch while the computer starts up, and pressing a menu button only to have it depress without the submenu coming up. That's not even mentioning all the annoying updates that need to be installed, the constant de-bug windows, or the fact that I can only run a handful of programs without running short of memory.

Having gone from Windows 98se which was a fast, stable, efficient, and very reliable OS to this one, I have to wonder what possessed me to make this backwards jump. Is there any real benefit to keeping this OS aside from being guaranteed compatibility with the newest games and peripherals?

:(

XP on my machine boots in under 20 seconds, down from near a minute on 98. I had a co worker whose machine took, literally, minutes to boot with XP. I had him run adaware and spybot, and it came down to under a minute. He had hundreds of spy programs coming up at boot. Give those a try (just search google, and make sure to update the data files once they are installed). Everyone should do this, BTW.

I'm completely amazed everyone's had such great experiences with Windows XP, to be honest, and especially surprised to hear that your computer boots so quickly, Realbinky. Mine takes between five and six minutes. Isn't that just so wrong?

wow... that's insane...

mine boots up in... after logging in? less than 20... Win XP pro and I have lots of stuff installed but no spyware and stuff like that... i also keep defragmenting it and stuff...

and yes, if it boots that long, it's gotta be memory ;)

From the time I push the button til the time I can open a program it is less than 50 seconds. And has been on any XP machine I've used so far.

I clocked my old 98 machine, and it took over two minutes to boot up. Even after lots of tweaking, the fastest I ever managed to get it was 90 seconds or so. Both my XP desktop and laptop are ready to go, like Timber's, in less than 50 seconds.

Even cooler, you can go to standby or hibernation and "boot back" in less than 10 seconds, and XP is stable enough to use both features for extended periods of time without hosing up the system. :D

Bahamut 10-28-2003 12:59 PM

yup that's right... but...

I lost my hibernate option... i wonder why... i forgot the reason... but can anybody refresh my memory?

I'm thinking of upgrading the memory to 1024mb (1gb). Will this greatly increase the overal performance?

Me 2 thinks that windows XP is great, although I use the PRO version and not home. WinXP needs occassional re-installing though, for it looses its speed, but then again maybe thats just because I stuff my PC full with software.

Upgrade the RAM not the hard memory. Optimum for XP is 500mb of ram. Smooth sailing, trust me I have 1gb RAM :D .
