Get yourself a good firewall and virus checker. Also once you have them installed be sure to update them with on a regular basis. A good one will have an automatic update feature that will check for updates on a regular basis.
Also keep your OS install (whatever flavor of windows you are using) patched with the latest security patches from MS. The vast majority of 'hacks' can be prevented by keeping your OS up to date. As most hackers are 'script-kiddies' ie bored kids that download scripts that real hackers have writen. Then they use these scripts to step trough IP adress and test for known vulnerabilities. You can easily bring your OS up to snuff by using the 'Windows Update' feature on your start menu. If it is not there go to: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/ |

On a side note we are all misusing the term "hacker". A "hacker" is someone who is an expert in some type of software and enjoys editing it at a deep level.
A "cracker" is someone who gains unauthorised access to servers. |
