Well stormymystic this is a similar problem to the one I have got. I just replaced my cd with a new one, and now the new one will not work at all. See my cd installation thread:(

Does your cd play Audio ok?

wonder if it is a virus?????

Official support site lists the 1.1 patch in its PC section, and thats it. Bloody poor if you ask me. Wont help you if you cant get the game installed.

Without more information I cant suggest anything specific, but:

1) Unless you got ripped when you bought your machine, you should have at least a 20Gb harddrive, which equates to 6Gb left. Ample.

2) 128Mb RAM is on the low side for windows XP. RAM is cheap and easy to fit though, just make sure you get the right type. System n=manual should help you there.

3) A dirty/scratched CD or a dirty CDROM lens can cause weird errors, but it would take a very badly written installer for it to fail this messily under winXP. Might be worth cleaning the CD and putting a lens cleaner into the CDROM drive. You can pick those up for about a fiver.

4) When you get the serious error recovery, hit the details button and see if you cant find anything that looks useful. Well, even strings of HEX could help. Post em up here.
