Bad situation.
I've done both things so that's what I suggest with your best friend.
Girls come and go.
True friends not

If you even have to ask, he can't be that close of a friend.

Been there done that got the STI(shirt).
I'd say all's fair unless your mates going out with the girl at the time. My nose hasn't been the same since :( .

I can't really say whether I would go for the girl and leave my friend out to dry or forget the girl and stay with my best friend because it depends on the situation entirely. If I don't REALLY like the girl then I'd just forget the girl and stay with my friend. However, if I had very strong feelings for this girl (the forbidden "L" word ;) ) then I'd have to say go for the girl. Also, if my friend and I were in serious competition for this girl then there'd definitely have to be some discussion going on. In the end though, I would let the girl choose. Not like my friend or I would have the final say anyways.

From a more rational point of view, you stand to lose a really special friendship with your best friend if the situation turns ugly. On the other hand, there is no guarantee that the girl is THAT SPECIAL ONE and it may just be a flitting relationship (bearing in mind relationships are fragile things). Being risk-averse, I'd again go with giving way gracefully
