I guess that's part of the difference. I enjoyed the puzzles and challenges in MM1 tremendously, and eventually, they led you to complete the main line quest. I don't mind forgetting about the main quest as long as the others continue to push me toward it without me realizing it. If they're just busywork, I don't like 'em. So a lot of quests that don't do a whole lot to advance the story... that I don't care for.
Things like the priest promotion in MM6 -- rebuild a temple? And there's no temple there until you do rebuild? Now *that* is a way to tie things in :D And as I'm playing through MM6 now... I really enjoy the number of dungeons per map. There seem to be three or four per map, which leaves lots of room to explore. MM9, I think it was one or two per map -- once you're there, you're done. |
Bard's Tale 1 had no quests to speak of; the game was a linear dungeon jaunt, pure and simple. You went into Dungeon A, where you got something you needed to enter Dungeon B, and so on. Got a little repetitious after awhile ;)

Okay, Zelda is NOT AN RPG. For the zillionth time!!! (although I suppose none of you know me. o.O)
For one, there isn't even experience. Everything that makes you more powerful is always in the same locations. It's an action-adventure, plain and simple. It wasn't dubbed an RPG until the N64 game, and for a big reason: The system was dying from lack of RPGs. They thought that by marketing the next Zelda game as one, it'd help sell an RPG deprived system. I kid you not. The one I've spent the most time on has got to be, hands down, Final Fantasy Tactics. Strategy-RPGs are my thing, man. I also love Tactics Ogre and Shining Force (although I've only had the chance to play any SF games for brief amounts of time...) FF6 is the best and only real gem of a mainstream FF title. I also like anything by tri-Ace, such as Star Ocean 2 and Valkyrie Profile (oh, PLEASE, let me not be the only one in here that knows who they are.) |
Well you dont have to be mean about it and even so zeldas are great games.

Sorry if I came off a little harsh. It's just that there had been a debate on that over at ZSNES that went for ten pages, and it's kind of annoying to me now. =\
I never said they weren't good games, I just said they aren't RPGs. Only t he side-scrolling one is. |
Baldur's Gate is a great game...i'm waiting to let the wife let me get Baldur's Gate II..LOL and also the pc game Menzobarranzen because i love the R.A. Salvatore Dark Elf books about Drizzt and the old Sega game Shinning Force and Shining Force II were great!
