Actually, you can trick the Mage into wasting her Death Spell. Simply send a worthless summon( like Skeletons or Kobolds) towards her to trigger the Death Spell. You may need to send a group as the Beholder will target them as well. Keep your Fire Elementals in the entrance room out of sight until she casts Death Spell. Oooo... and they are immuned to her Meteor spell as well. ;)

Beholders are also vulnerable to fire, and consider casting Insect Plague on the Beholder or the Mage.
