Re: Art Programs?
@SilentThief - Personally if I were going to design a game "from scratch" and wanted to have total programming control over my project I would choose Dark Basic Professional. As far as I can tell it is the most supported, is designed specifically for game design, has an active online community, and offers tons and tons of resources to get you started. Well worth the investment if you ask me. What sort of projects do you have mind?
@Manikus - On other hand I like your idea if it will mean more rapid development of DC! :thumbsup2: |
Re: Art Programs?
No projects come to mind at this point (I've been working 12 hour days for three weeks now), but it would be nice to have an SDK that I know how to use. When I get some free time and I play a game like morrowind, I always say things like "this is a good game, but I could do it better..."

Re: Art Programs?
Really, the way to go if you want to program for games and such, it to learn c++ and/or java.
Dark Basic and the like, while very nice tools, are really just scripting languages. So, you might be able to do a lot of stuff with them, on top of someone else's framework, but ultimately you're tied to the limitations they impose. Also, ST, if you want to program for a living in the game biz- shoot for what's most marketable. I've also heard from the programmers I know, that learning a scripting language can be hard for non-programmers, but once you can do object oriented programming, they are pretty easy to pick up. I guess that way you can have the best of both worlds. :) |
Re: Art Programs?
I know, C++ is the biggun. Basic is the only language I can directly translate without any reference... (or assumption)

Re: Art Programs?
I've been working VB for a while and like it quite a bit. If you're comfortable with basic, I don't think it's that far of a strectch to pick up VB, at least the .NET stuff.
