Cadderly from R.A Salvatore's The Cleric Quintet with Drizzt a close second.

up to siege of darkness Drizzt was my fav forgotten realms character, but now he's become a cliche and I haven't seen bob salvatore do anything new with him in a very long time (some of the companions of the hall are getting some much needed time, like Wulfgar in spine of the world, and Artemis in silent blade and servant of the shard)

In DL my favourite was Sturm. No question about it. I have always liked honourable characters. His death was one of the saddest things I can remember reading. I also liked Raistlin because I liked the conflict in him. Actually, I liked pretty much everyone in DL, but Sturm was far and away the best.
In FR, I'd have to say Drizzt, but this may be partly because I haven't read many FR books. I hear people complaining that he's getting stale. After so many books, I guess it is possible, but so far I've only read the first 6 books, so I have no real opinion yet.
Thing is, everyone and his brother started playing dual-wielding Drow rangers and then blamed Drizzt for it. Kind of reminds me of alternative music. You'll love a band until they become popular. Even if their music doesn't change, the simple fact that everyone is now listening to them turns off a lot of their former fans, as if to say "it's popular, so it's crap".

I have no problems with drizzt, or people trying to play characters based off of him, they just have to play by my rules (I think the rules shipped way back with the unearthed arcana back in may of '85 work just fine for drow)

my main problem with the drizzt books are that after passage to dawn were just rehashing the preivous books and riding off of their popularity, there hasn't been very much new to the story at all.

That's too bad.
The problem is that when you write a book, you do so because you have something to say. Sometimes, though, a book or setting becomes very popular and the author thinks "hey, a lot of fans want me to write more", and they try to do so, but might now have any new thoughts to convey. They try to supply their fans with what they want, but the original thoughts and emotions behind the character have all been expressed.

*nods* of course I haven't read the new book, so i can't say about that one, Ziroc recommended it though

Favorite DL character.. Tas and Raist

My favorite FR character.. I'm not too sure. I've read over a dozen FR novels and none of them really had very good character development. Most of the characters were either hard to believe or poorly developed. I guess Jarlaxle is my favorite, but only because none of the others really stand out.
